This is the kind of list that could be COMPLETELY redone with a whole different set of videos, both Top Ten and honorable mentions, and it would still be just fine. Although I can't really argue with the top three (personally, I might have put "Take On Me" at #2). A few other acts and their iconic videos that could be included would be The Cars ("You Might Think"), Herbie Hancock ("Rockit"), Tina Turner ("What's Love Got to Do With It?"), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ("Don't Come Around Here No More"), Robert Palmer ("Addicted to Love"), Janet Jackson ("Nasty"), and Paula Abdul ("Straight Up").
What? Not even a mention of Men at Work!? They started the Australian Invasion with the quirky and chart topping "Who Can it Be Now?" and "Down Under" in 1982. Both videos managed to look professional and made with your friend's hand held camera at the same time. They followed up with other great videos like "Overkill" and "It's a Mistake".
I was thinking the same, i wouldn't contend their first place, like it was already 86/87 and thriller still aired every now and then , but I think like a prayer was way more iconic than like a virgin (both are, but like a prayer comes to mind way more when talking about 80s madonna and music videos)

The video for welcome to the jungle made so many people call MTV, their phone lines literally burned through...... And it was shown in the middle of the night. Cant believe its not on here
Another good one that should have gotten at least a mention is "When the Rain Begins to Fall" by Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora. It was great because just like "Take on Me" it was a little mini-movie that told a story. I also loved the video for Nik Kershaw's "The Riddle" and for "Safety Dance" by Men without Hats. The 80s were a really great decade for music videos.
Nobody seems to remember this now, but to me nothing screams 80's like the Two tribes video by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The sheer commentary and brutal fight of the US and Soviet in this really hit home, and it is a brilliant track too.
It's amazing no The Cure music video made even the honorable mentions (Lullaby, Close to Me, Why can't I be you or Hot, Hot Hot are among the best music videos ever...). Number 1 was pretty obvious and the top 3 is quite unquestionable, masterpieces. Land of confusion by Genesis should be top 5, too.

So many iconic videos of the mid 80s. There is prolly 50 other videos u could have put in this top 10 that I wouldn't argue with. It was a great time to be alive. Especially as a kid.
Sledgehammer!! And he's not just the "creator of Wallace and Gromit"- his name is Nick Park, founder of Creature Comforts and pretty much the god of claymation. Shaun the Sheep, anyone? Chicken Run? Utmost respect to that man.
Man you guys got me Rickrolled. I was legitimately upset that Thriller wasn't number 1, but you calmed my worries. Thriller is the greatest music video ever
+Twan L. Claiborne I know right! lol Janet has had some of the most iconic music videos of BOTH the 80s and 90s, but I'm not surprised, Watchmojo doesn't seem to care for her. No top 10 songs? Top 10 videos? Top 10 moments? Arguably the most influential female pop star after Madonna and....nothing! -_-
Michael Jackson's motto for music videos: if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing. Or at least, going above and beyond what is necessary. Nothing beats Thriller.
There used to be a good channel called The Hits when freeview first came out in UK, and they used to do the best 80s specials! Growing up it made me love the 80s, my favourites were White Wedding, Stand and Deliver and Ghost Town. Oh how I loved those videos....
+gadget00 I'll disagree. I worked in the music department of a store when 1984 came out. We had display keyboards, and just about every Eddie Van Wannabe would come in and butcher that keyboard opening to "Jump". To this day, 30 years later, I still twitch when I hear those first power chords. You can't say the same about "Panama".
Here's my list: 10: Def Leppard: Pour Some Sugar On Me, or Robert Palmer: Addicted To Love. 9: Guns 'n' Roses: Welcome to the Jungle, or the Police: Every Breath You Take. 8: Michael Jackson: Beat It, or Prince: When Doves Cry. 7: Madonna: Like a Prayer. 6: Michael Jackson: Billie Jean. 5: Bon Jovi: Livin' on a Prayer. 4: Dire Straits: Money for Nothing. 3: Madonna: Like a Virgin. 2: Peter Gabriel: Sledgehammer. 1: Michael Jackson: Thriller.

I don't know. I know the song was 1979, and technically the debut of the video was 79 as well before it first launched MTV, but I feel like maybe they should've made an exception for Video Killed the Radio Star? It's so iconic, and it feels weird that it's left off the list...
