That is true, in Germany they also tested the BMW 525d (4-cylinder) against a 530d that was exactly the same. The test result was that the 530d had a better fuel consumption then the 525d, as the larger engine did not have to "work" that much comparing the same driving profile. ***** Thanks for answering my question however I've now done my own Investigations a few days ago and I've now realized it does improve fuel efficiency considerably around 10 to 15% (for the regular driver) like me I know some people have the skills to beat computers even when playing chess , in my case computers are always kicking my but I've tested this with a app called torque which connects to the OBD (Instant mpg ) I tend to Exaggerate on the accelerator especially going up Hill and some times it can take 5 or 6 mph down to realize I have to accelerate again and waste even more fuel to get to the speeds I was doing in the first place
niceguy60 man...don't listen to any....the answer is IT DEPENDS...if you are tempered without cruse you can improve MPG...if you can't control the throttle don't bother...cruise is best for over 80% of drivers....
niceguy60 it's also dependent on the car's cruise system. Some are programmed better than others. For example, my Saab 9-5 2.0t has a great cruise system, as it gets near the target speed it reduces acceleration gradually until it reaches it. This leads to great fuel saving. My Renault Grand Scenic 1.5dci on the other hand is a beast. It goes full throttle until it reaches the target speed but by the time it disengages it has already overshoot by a few miles so it closes the throttle completely, causing a slowdown which makes the car too slow and misses the target speed again, so again it accelerates. It takes a few attempts to manage to stay at constant speed.
Mircea Dogaru I believe I have exactly the same cruise control system on my Renault Laguna from 2011 , 1.5 dci I know exactly what you mean, when you mentioned the cruise control is eager to reach a certain speed However once it reaches the desired speed is pretty good at maintaining it, I also noticed it tries to save fuel going down hill, when engine load being reduced in some cases to 0%
