Peg Perego Gator- DIY repair of gear switches reverse and forward speeds

- In this video we cover the very common issues with the peg perego john deere gator not working in forward hi low and reverse speeds. In the shifter mechanism is two double pole double throw contactor switches. If even one contact surface gets dirty, rusty or soot covered the unit will not work as intended. Check out this video to go through the process to repair you kids ride on toy for free. Please noted that this is strictly for the older version of gator models with the switches in the shifter. New model XUV does not have switches and will need a new shifter and wiring harness as it is not easy to disassemble or repair. Lastly, this repair may not work on a unit that has been left outside and the shifter switches have become extremely rusting. BTW this repair will also work on fisher price powerwheels brand shifters.

I cleaned old switches and it worked for a while. Replaced with new shifter now only second gear.
I wrapped a long thin strip of 280 grit over a thin screw driver and polished the contacts on my Son's Kawasaki 4 wheeler and upgraded it to a lawn tractor battery and it runs until he can't.
I picked up a slightly newer model Gator for him that I'll dig into in a little while.
I have a black xuv. One wheel spins in reverse and 1st but drives around fine. 2nd gear both wheels spin for sec and shuts off then clicks and same thing
Thanks for video… I’m having issues with the kid traxx like one in your shop . It go slow no reverse or high cleaned shifter didn’t help any ideas . If it’s foot pedal or something elese .. any help would be grateful. Grandson is upset it not working. I’m lost on ideas
Hi have the new style gator one wheel spins and only in second gear. No reverse or first speed. I took it apart switched the good motor to the other side and it works but only in second gear. So I know I have one bad motor. My question is why am I not getting first and revers speed on either side. Mine has the blue switch not the same style as in this video you pull apart. Thanks
Motor is wired in series of n low and reverse so power is not getting thru the bad motor
Dealing with a similar issue on the same model. When I opened it up all gears were still functioning but I found that the shifter wasn’t pushing the toggle for reverse correctly. It gets stuck on top of the triangle piece for the reverse rather than pushing it down. Not sure how that happened or now to fix it. Any suggestions?
So far I’ve replaced the peddle and the shifter switch and it still doesn’t work. What is the little black rectangle box on the wiring in between the shifter and the pedal?
Thermal fuse. Did u hotwire motors to confirm they both work?
You said near the beginning of the video that if only one rear wheel spun,it would be an easier problem. That is my situation can you please describe the fix? ;)
So I watched your video, got the contact cleaner, and it worked! The only problem is that I have 1 speed forward and 2 speeds of reverse, so I must have reconnected something backwards. Did I plug the shifter back in upside down? Please help if possible. Thanks!
Sounds like u plugged a connector in backwards. Flip them around till u get two forward speeds
I have a gator that I can't figure out what's wrong with it! 😭 I need your help haha! There's not a person who fixes them where I live. Do you ever help people over the phone?
Il send my jeep gaucho in if he takes packages
Not really but start at the battery connectors and work your way to pedal wires, shifter and motors spin when tested with direct voltage to them.
Do you know where is can get the red coupler part that connects to the shifter.
My kids car going only backward not moving forward, what could be the problem
Any leads of replacement switches other the peg Perego themselves? Both of mine look like they spent a lifetime on the bottom of a lake.
Can you tell me why one is going forward and one is going backwards
We have a ride on for my son. It is a peg perego Polaris rzr. Hi and low both work but reverse doesn’t. I pulled apart the spring loaded switch similar to the one cleaned in this video but reverse still doesn’t work. How would I test the switch to see if I need a new switch or if this is caused by a different issue?
I have a newer gen model, the tires have worn out so I am putting some rubber on them, but I’m concerned with wearing gears out. Recommendation? I was thinking remove the resistance brake so it can roll out a little instead of hard brake. Please let me know.
Yes, adding a .5 ohm resistor is helpful
I’m trying to get mine fixed for my little cousins Bc it’s like there fav thing but I have to push them Bc it won’t move so I’m trying to fix it when the put there foot on the pedal it won’t move at all
My switch only works on reverse except for forward I need help
Where do you recommend getting a new pedal? My sons pedal isn’t working & I have no idea what kind I’m suppose to get or where to purchase one. I seen on amazon but they have so many different kinds I’m not sure which one.
I have a peg perego gator xuv550 that has somehow reversed gears. Forward is backwards and backwards is forward. Any ideas?
Could be reversed wires at battery, swap gearboxes from side to side or change motor wires if they are not soldered on. All three will swap direction.
Why does my sons dodge truck have two reverse gears and only one forward?? It is supposed to have two forward, a high and low and then reverse. Why is this happening??
Unplug the motor connectors under the bed and swap them. They r plugged in on wrong sides
And I have a blue shifter thing...does that mean it is newer and this video doesn't apply?
Thank-you for your video, I was able to fix my grandkids gator by cleaning the switches! Question, I’m now trying to fix a Groucho which is no power in 1,2 and R. I cleaned the switches, put in a different battery (from a gator that works) and I still have no power in 1,2 and R. What now???
Foot pedal switch
@@CustomKidzCars I have kid traxx ram truck it has low with one wheel and with no high and no reverse cleaned shifter still same . Figured if it was foot pedal it wouldn’t have any movement. The low is supper low think it barely goes. Any ideals would be greatly appreciated
Hi, I have a jeep hurricane power wheels.
The low forward gear goes in REVERSE. The high forward gear and normal reverse work as intended. What shall I do? Thanks
Sounds like one of the shifter plugs is plugged in backwards. I always label them before working on them to make it easy to plug back in properly.
@@CustomKidzCars Hi, thanks for your quick response. The only thing I worked on was to disassemble the gear boxes because I thought the gears might have been stripped. They were fine...regreased them and put back together. I may have misspoken. The normal reverse gear goes forward. The two forward gears go in reverse. Thanks for any further suggestions.
@@MasonDevTHEGOAT yeah that a different mess up., u need to flip flop the motor wires
@@CustomKidzCars Thanks, again. I didn't disconnect the wires to the motors, but I think I switched the motors to different wheels than where they were before. I will switch them back. Thanks, again, for your advice. Much appreciated.
@@MasonDevTHEGOAT yes u did but it's easier to just swap wires if they are not soldered. If soldered swap boxes.
My child has car,now car is going to reverse but not going to straight/front. I try to manual & also remote control. So what problem in? Plz help
Pretty vague question but sounds like u installed the motor connectors on the wrong side. Try swapping plugs
@@CustomKidzCars actually its got ij his birthday than to now few days ago it was work properly. But before few days ago got problem, just go to reverse,& not going straight way.little sound was listen of motor.
Is the backward supposed to stay in place?
For on mine I have to keep it down otherwise it returns by itself at the number 1 speed
It is spring loaded so yours is working correctly
Hi. I put two 12v batteries in series and was running great for 20 mins. Now nothing. Can it still just be a fuse? No loose connections.
U would need to test each motor directly, probably smoked the motors or gas pedal
Great video! I have a similar issue, except it only reverses if both switches are pushed down at the same time. Any idea why??
One switch is for reverse and the other for high low. Still sounds like a switch issue. Would need to test them for resistance
@@CustomKidzCars will try that and get back to you. Thanks
Question. I just fixed up an old Fisher price. Problem was no fwd low, fwd high or reverse. Bought new shifter and switches. It now runs but it has 2 reverse speeds and 1 fwd speed. What happened?
Either battery leads are reversed, plugged in one shifter switch backwards or gearboxes got switched side for side. Easy fix depends on what all you altered.
@@CustomKidzCars thanks for the quick reply. I just had switch plugged in upside down on the connection to pedal. Thanks. Subscribing!
i have the newer XUV John Deere gator. do you have any information on checking it out.. it goes reverse in every gear
Never seen that problem. The new shifter is not able to repair, sounds like I need a new shifter. I would first check wiring plugs and verify that both motors are spinning, not just one.
is it posible to put a revers switch on a 6v baby shark plush ride ? its only got a forward switch on it . but the kid keeps getting into spots they cant turn around in . thanks for any info .
Would need a dpdt switch like a 12 volt model. Would be easier to just do a harness swap
@@CustomKidzCars thanks for the input and info sir . very helpful .
Hello, I started rebuilding a gator for my son. It’s the same one your working on, behind the gear shifter there is another plug that doesn’t go to anything. Do you know what thst is? It’s a white 2 hole plug. Thank you
It goes to the dump bed actuator found on the yellow work site gator.
On my sons gen 2 gator 2nd gear is fine but in first it gets stuck and spins if he turns. In low both wheels spin but if you hold one it quits spinning and won't start agin until you let off then hit the petal agin. Both sides do that. Is that normal if not what should I check out?
Normal. In low and rev the motors r wired in series and high is parallel so both motors get 12 volts direct. If motor doesn't spin the motor could be going out. Repaired a peg tractor today that the motor would not spin unless u spin the tire by hand to engage the motor.
Thanks for this video it was a huge help. 1st and reverse weren't working on our gator and only 1 wheel was spinning in 2nd. I took apart the shifter and cleaned all the switches as best I could with Isopropyl Acohol and a Q-Tip. I don't have a volt meter so I just cleaned them all. After putting it all back together both wheels now spin in 2nd, but still no response from 1st and reverse. Any tips?
So if both motors spin u have resistance at the hi low switch. I would use electronics cleaner and scrape the switch contacts with a small flat screwdriver.
@@CustomKidzCars Is the high/low switch supposed to have springs and look like the one in your video? I'm working on a used one, have power to both motors, both motors work with jumper wires hooked from a test battery, but, nothing will spin the tires. I followed your video to a tee, but, my high low switch has only 2 short center springs not the longer outside 2.
Did u first check the foot pedal switch?
Is there a fix for the old blue type ? or when can I buy new one like this.
Might be able to find used but if your tires are worn it's best to just buy the updated cross drive type. Just Google it, sold all over the web. Ebay, Amazon, etc
I have the dinosaur raptor one and it stopped going in reverse and low speed but will go on high. Both tires used to turn now only one turns what's the problem I need help
Motor or switch
We have the older style shifter. IS it possible to convert to the newer style? If not, do you have a video on how to clean/fix the older style? We are having some weird intermittent issues with ours.
U would need the overhaul upgrade kit wiring harness. U can take apart the switches and clean the contacts. I highly recommend taking pics of the shifter so u can put it back together properly. Thanks for the inspiration for another how to video. Will add it to the list.
@@CustomKidzCars I've already taken it part to try to find an issue. I ran direct power o each of the wheel motors and those worked fine so I assumed the problem was in the wiring/shifter. I tested continuity all the way through from the battery connection, through he medal, to the shifter, etc, everything was fine. Took the shifter apart and didn't see any buildup, everything looked clean. I put it back together and it works fine for a few minutes, then will just stop running. It's really weird. Sometimes if you star pushing it in reverse while pressing the pedal down for it to drive forward, the motors will suddenly kick on and go forward. Or if you pick up the gator and drop it down hard sometimes it will start working again for a bit, then just randomly stop.
If u have a volt meter I would put it in ohms setting and test for resistance. In the older style I have found that where the shifter connects to the red wiring plug applying dialectric grease helps continuity
@@CustomKidzCars Yeah, I have a voltmeter which is How I was testing all the tiring to make sure there were no breaks in the harness anywhere and made sure the pedal assembly was allowing a signal through. Do you know if new switch units are available for these stateside? All I could find that would match the part # on the side had to ship from china. I'll try the dielectric in the meantime.
@@Kapok6 I'm currently having some issues trying to put my old style shifter back together. I'm doing a 20v conversion on this dead tractor everything works as it should minus the shifter
Hey man what if I have the blue coupler and low and hi forward gears are now reverse and reverse is now forward?
Swap motor wires or flip gearboxes to the other sides
Hallo from Austria! Do you now what can happens at a New Gator if only one wheel is turning? And only in 2nd gear? Best greatings! Hubert
Bad motor or wire tab broken off.
ruclips.net/video/um6--WAR_Y4/видео.html
OK thanks! The cable should be OK? I'll see if I can get new motors somewhere! Thx!
I would test motor directly first to confirm it's not a loose connection
The only strange thing is that the right wheel only runs in 2 gear?
Does this work on a a peg prego John Deere Ground Loader, 12v with a scooper?
Yes it should as long as it's the safe generation shifter with the switches
I lost my spring any ideas where I can get replacements or size I need?
U could ask on the Facebook modified powerwheels page or contact Peg Perego.
I have a 12v Land Rover electric car won't go forward or backwards, will turn on
I have had a bad switch cause 1 motor to work and the other not.
ı try to buy new one .. but after see this i think its not necessary ı try to clean or put button and remove shitfer..
Thanks will try it
As always, another great video. Thank you
I have one of these and it cuts in and out, when it does work both tires spin, could this be the foot pedal switch? How can I check it?
With a volt meter. Set to ohms and test the normally open circuit for resistance. When u press the pedal it should close the circuit. Another culprit is the thermal fuse on top of the battery.
@@CustomKidzCars
So I think it isn't the pedal as it runs every time for like 5 ft then completely stops, then it'll go again after a break so thermal fuse? How do I fix or rig this?
Remove and replace with regular fuse or breaker
@@CustomKidzCars thank you for the response's!!!
@@CustomKidzCars what size fuse? I think the thermal plug on mine is bad too.
I have a gator 6x4 it’s 24v batteries are good but you hit the pedal and nothing happens
Could be pedal, shifter switches or motor
CKC Garage okay I will have to look up how to test those thank you
How much did you charge for that repair?
$25
Thanks for great video ;)
I've replaced the shifter and pedal, but still no power to the motor. When I connect the battery directly to the motor the wheels spin. The battery shows just under 12v, would the fact the battery is less than 12v prevent power from getting to the motor?
Yes, if u test the battery the same time as motors I bet voltage sags way down. New battery is fairly cheap.
@@CustomKidzCars thanks I'll test by splicing an AC charger with a direct connect.
I followed your video directly and when I plugged it back in I now get no response at all from the pedal. Battery is brand new and both wheels were spinning before I took it apart. Any ideas?
I would check resistance at the switches, should be 0 ohms from center pin to each outside pin depending on which way the switch is flipped. Easy to mess up the little rocker when puting back together
Both of my wheels turn but gears are reversed-tried reversing the main switch
Swap gearboxes to opposite sides will reverse rotation. Or swap polarity on each motor does the same thing.
My kids car only one wheel is spinning what next?
Wire power direct to motor to confirm it works. If it works it's in your switch
CKC Garage thanks
What state are you in ??
Michigan
@@CustomKidzCars I’m in Michigan, what city do you live in?
It won't go
cool
A pencil eraser will clean those contacts as well
