I loved going to the grocery store and laundry mat because I could play this game.
Loved that Konami managed to re-invent Track & Field/Hyper Sports/Hyper Olympic during their 1987 offering. It's a shame seeing such a beloved dev/publisher completely lose their collective marbles. Sega did the same. They forgot what it is about their brand that people love.
then came track an field 2
then the finger blistering 3d dream
cast version and then the ds version.
Track Balls turned my hands red, especially on sports titles.
Here in the U.K., I only ever saw this as ‘Combat School’ and with a track ball. Only. Didn’t even know it was available with a joystick. That track ball was a nightmare.
It was always available with joystick
In the UK
Well the arcades in Sheffield had joystick
C64 - We wrecked a couple joysticks on this game! Thanks for this great memeory Patman!
So did I my friend. This game, decathlon and track and field were the worst offenders :-) thanks
My dad's favorite arcade Game, we used to play a lot of mame together when I was 4 back at '99, he Also loved playing track and field, he sadly passed away in may after struggling with leukemia for a few years, thank you Patman for bringing back such nice memories of my childhood
Sorry to hear that. I appreciate you sharing your gaming memories with me. I love reading about families who bond over video games. Thanks a lot
I loved the graphical look of Konami games. This was one I had on my trusty, dusty C64 and remember it as a joystick killer! The drill instructor fight I think pays homage to An Officer and a Gentleman where Richard Gere and his instructor Lou Gossett Jr fight on a raised platform in a hangar.
Yep, the first level involved shaking the joystick left + right to build power, not too dissimilar to the swimming level in Konami's other game Hypersports!
When my dad was stationed in Italy, this was one of the 3 games at the Inn we would eat at. It had the stick, not the ball though.
Ah yes I had this on the C64, and you’re damn right about that music blasting you in the face, and what a tune it was! The game was not kind to any of my joysticks though and I could never pass the iron man stage.
I do recall seeing Combat School in the arcade once though and it did have a trackball. I think it was an amusement park arcade but it was a very long time ago now…
There is a rom for joysticks, which is much easier to play, though it’s marked world, so it much be for use outside Japan and North America.
Nice video. I vaguely remember playing this on my C64.
I always thought this game was based on the popular movie An Officer and a Gentleman. Since there is a fight scene with the Drill instructor in that movie and in the game it's very similar but Stripes does make perfect sense. Love your videos
It's possible it's an amalgamation of the two. Thanks a lot :-)
I have never heard of this game. Pretty cool looking.
I played the arcade, actually, either in July 1987 or august 1989, can't recall, at one of the bars in the main square of Prades, Tarragona, in Spain. Yet I can't remember what I ate yesterday.
what you mean booger free ?
I've seen this game use a trackball and, a few years later, a joystick. Since I played it first in Germany using a trackball, I guess it was called boot camp.
The game is a lot easier using a stick, IMO.
Could never beat the final stage.
This is so awesome patty
What I love about PatmanQC is that he either reminds me of games I grew up with, or introduces me to stuff I've never even heard of. I've frequented a number of arcades in my youth, and I don't recall seeing Combat School anywhere.
Very cool, I'm glad my silly little videos can bring you some joy :-)
Thanks for another entertaining video! Minor detail: Martin Galway’s last name is pronounced ”Gall” as in ”de Gaulle” (or the bladder, whichever you prefer), confirmed this in e-mail conversation with the man himself.
Thanks for the correction :-)
Wow I had forgotten about this game what a blast from the past. Great video.
I like how most of the combat training doesn't prepare you for the final mission.
Yes, ridiculous :-)
Boy you can really see the influence this game and Contra had on each other in the Level 4 shooting range. Everything from the player strafing animation, to the music, and even the sound of the gun. It looks like this game and the arcade Contra, then the NES Contra, were all developed right around the same time by Konami, so there must have been a number of the same artists and game developers working on all three.
Yaaay! The conversions!!
Never seen this one in the arcades back in the day. But I do remember sitting in my bedroom in complete silence, waggling my stick, as you put it. 😁
Thanks for the video, introducing me to a great "new" game I wouldn't otherwise had heard of.
LOL, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks
Awesome vid. Thank u. Not only did u bring back memories. Ur insights and commentary are very detailed.
Glad you enjoyed it
Lol I JUST finished watching your earlier one, and commented...
What happened, why ya gotta redo?
I hjppe not to take out your comments during that hilarious "man on man, anything goes STRUGGLE, during the arm wrestling part lmao....I was dyin
EDIT ADDED--- read the description, now i remember at the end you talking and the game sound effects drowning u out... will still get an automatic "LIKE" from me
LOL, glad you enjoyed my silly sense of humor :-) thanks a lot my friend
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries hey---funny is funny!
Plus, u remind me of the perfect Mystery Science Theater 3000 "understudy" if such a thing existed!
Boot Camp at our local arcade.
Cant believe I forgot about this one. You are really pulling out ones from the forgotten past. Love it!
Thanks!
Loved this on c64..what a blast from the past..
you know it's a good game when
you fight your own drill instructor one on one.😂
I had this on the spectrum. Total joystick destroyer and I found it so hard
Cheers pmqc great video
Thanks 👍
Love this channel
Thank you my friend
That finger poke of doom is brutal. Ask Kevin Nash
I remember playing this a few times as a kid and wondering why the military is rescuing the hostage instead of the police parked outside.
LOL, I've been playing this since the 80s and never even thought about that. Good call
While a rare game in arcades, thank you for covering it as this is the first time I've noticed it. Looks challenging with the basic training and top secret missions. Good to see there are conversions of it too for systems. Thanks PatmanQC!
I always Enjoyed track and field growing up and then when this came along It provided just enough variance. Thanks for watching
Another great one, Patman! The only thing missing is the 'shark attack' when you first start the game😅
LOL, thanks
Hadn't hit me that Green Beret was the original name for Rush-N-Attack , but I absolutely knew that alarm in the beginning 👌
didn't know this one existed, thanks for sharing.
Hope you like it!
My father's friend owned a submarine shop ( not franchised so it was really good.) He would sometimes have an arcade machine that he would change out every so often. Plenty of old games and one was Boot Camp. Another short lived one was Demon Stone
That sounds like a great shop:-)
I remember seeing ads for this and then bought the Boot Camp version on the Commodore128 and man it was challenging. Thanks to MAME got to play it again under the Combat School title. Konami just to rip off likeness of celebrities and lucky enough to avoid lawsuits.
Yes, they were probably the most blatant company back in the 80s to do so
New Patman vid! Shweet!
Enjoy my friend
Ahh, Track and field... where you're pretty much guaranteed the run button is flaky and doesn't register all the button presses. At least that's how they always were on the machines I played on - worn out button.
Yup, i remember playing this on my 48Kb ZX-Spectrum, good game, fantastic conversion by Mike Lamb (one of the best 80's coders) who made also other Speccy gems: Target Renegade, Arkanoid Revenge of Doh, Arkanoid, Batman The Movie, WEC Le Mans, Renegade, Robocop.
Awesome thanks 👍👍
Thank you too!
I've never seen this game, it seems cool. I'm interested in a doc on the other games mentioned @ 5:56 Green Beret and Devastators. Good job Pat💪
I have already done one on Green Beret so check the archives :-) thanks
The fight with the drill seargent was borrowed from the movie Officer and a Gentleman.
Oh really? Where did you read that
6:00 - “one of these things is not like the others ♫
one of these things just isn’t the same ♩”
I never saw this one out in the wild. Hey pat, have you ever seen the show "don't hug me Im scared"? It's a messed up puppet show. It seems like something you would like given your sense of humor. Someone took all of the episodes and put them on YT. I believe you can find it if you search for DHMIS movie. Thanks for another awesome documentary sir.
Hi! I came across your channel. I play many original arcade machines in clubs in Germany and put them online as videos. Since I would like to know the background, I think the historical information about these games is awesome. Could you also get the historical information about Pinballaitomat? There are, of course, tables with certain themes that are easy to recognize, such as Star Wars or Star Trek... But many old tables are difficult to identify. I added your channel as a channel recommendation....
14:51 is the sound effect from Haunted Castle when Simon gets hurt hehe
Good call
I’m a 70’s born kid grew up in the 80’s. You dug down deep for this one because I have never heard of this game. Great content covering the history of this game. I’m a Army Veteran and can appreciate this game. 🪖🇺🇸👍🏽
First off thanks for your service and if you like track and field style games you should definitely check this out. Thanks
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Thanks so much! And I shall check it out
love it . nostalgia city.
Really enjoy your videos, any chance you can do Forgotten Worlds by Capcom.
Thanks, it's on my list just a matter of getting down to it
Any chance about the collaboration video. I’m doing one now on guilty pleasures. I only need a 1 minute video. I got some big names on board but your my favorite 😃
Tell me exactly what you need From me
I love this game, I would have loved to have a proper arcade conversion for the home... sadly I never saw it in arcades
knew of it from the home versions never saw it in an arcade and never even emulated it either, nice 👍
Combat School is new to me and I will play the arcade version first for the fun of it. 😀👍🎮
I’ve only seen two cabinets of this game in my life, and it’s fun, but difficult to play with the trackball. A joystick would have made it so much easier.
I remember having this on the Speccy and never really giving it much though as it didn't look like a "proper" wargame.
Have you ever done any of the Time Crisis arcade games? Those were some of the best ever!!!
Subbed =D
Thanks a lot!
I saw this one at Peter Piper Pizza way back in the 80s. I never played it, but watched others play it.
I have never seen an actual cabinet. I couldn't find any pictures of a combat school cabinet online either
Could you do the history of Missile Command? It must be very interesting!
It's on the list
Ah yes, nothing like Tom Cruise getting yelled at by Sergeant Slaughter. 😂😂 Oh, the 1980's, how I miss you sometimes.
LOL you and me both
All I can hear at 5:32 is "You go hamburger date nighting!"
Konami were so prolific and had such a high standards... RIP old Konami
from greatness to hot garbage.
@@nemopouncey3827 I wouldn't blame Konami, people didn't buy their games beside Metal Gear Solid series. Even Metal Gear Rising was a flop in sales. Is all business at the end and they will do whatever give them money.
@@-RH80- yep.
There was a game like this but, it involved super heroes jumping up buildings and stopping trains. Can't remember the name of it.
Interesting. Never heard of this game before and never saw the arcade. The city I grew up in was too small I guess.
I live in a pretty big area and I've never seen one here either. Then again we never had the Batman arcade game either
Not a ripoff, it’s a rehash. A track and field rehash.
I remember this vaguely on the C64. :)
It was a pretty good conversion
Also, I guessed wrong that this was leeching off full metal jacket. It makes sense either way but stripes was a much lighter tone!
The model on the devastators poster looks like Courtney Thorne-Smith
Yes she does
Pretty good ports. Maybe I missed it but I didn't hear you talk about whether the home ports had an easier last level than the arcade game or it was still just as hard. 🤔
Still just as hard
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Yikes.
Drill sgt art looks like R Lee Ermy
In terms of how often this was seen in real life arcades compared to other Konami games, between Boot Camp and Combat School, KLOV lists 40 cabinets/PCBs. This compares to 557 Track and Field/Hyper Olympic, 187 Hyper Sports/Hyper Olympic '84, 145 Rush'n Attack/Green Beret, 135 Contra/Gryzor, 95 Jackal/Top Gunner, and 45 Gradius/Nemesis (PlayChoice not included).
Also, Konami: Pick a title. Americans and Brits don't need different English names. It's like they couldn't remember if it was a NA or EU cabinet unless they stuck a different name on it.
Well that would explain it then. That is some good info my friend, I appreciate that. The same goes for konami's other military themed games with the name change with contra I can understand As well as rush'n attack into Green Beret but combat school into boot camp?
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Is it possible that there was a European English localization team and a US English localization team and they made their decisions separately? Anybody know?
Hahaha beefy and queefy, just the way I like it!!🤣🤣🤣
LOL thank you
happy little games.
Thank you :-)
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries welcome.
A great game but sadly never managed to save the hostage as that level was just too damn hard.
No doubt, as I said in the video they just sort of throw you win at the end with no explanation of the controls. Once you get a grasp on it can you die and have to start the entire process all over again. It took me forever to finally beat that
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Same with Green Beret. The last level was impossible.
I had this on the ZX Spectrum and I never managed to get past the second event.
I was surprised that every single conversion was pretty good
Happy little games
Thanks !
wonder why the reupload?
either RUclips being RUclips again
or Konami copyright claiming
again.
I had to fix a couple of errors in the video
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries oh ok pat thought RUclips being
RUclips again.
WC4L 😁Take care brother.
Thanks, you too!
16:45 Quote of the Day 👍
EDIT: 17:51 to 18:02 Jeez..... 🤣
LOL, thank you :-)
4:23 by same you mean totally different?
Yes, they are totally different And don't sound similar whatsoever
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I'll give you similar or reminiscent 😁 more seriously though... I really enjoy your content. Thanks fella!
It was easier if you had someone helping you with a jump while someone smacked the run buttons 🧐
Yes, just like we used to do with track and field
You know I should make you drop and give me 20, 20 times over.
That was Marines colors at the 3:30-3:40 not army. They don't have red.
WARNING INCOMING PADANTIC NERD COMMENT: Welll... Actually he looks like.. uh..um...yeah... you are correct... Yes.... Ogre... Nevermind... carry on! (*Put in teeth retainer and continues painting D&D miniature figurine)
LOL, I loved that movie.
Lol did Nintendo really get on you about the Donkey Kong screenshot? That’s completely absurd. Change your intro from “happy little games” to “Donkey Kong sucks” so it falls under fair use as a review.
No, Nintendo didn't do anything. Why do you ask?
I played this arcade in the UK, it was Combat School and it had the track ball.
I also had it on the ZX Spectrum on +3 Disk….played it to death, it was the sound of Christmas as I bought it on Boxing Day using Christmas money and gift vouchers for The Computer Store which was a computer game chain at the time.
I think it was £14.95 for the +3 Disk.
