  • What happened to Lydia? The question at the center of Ng’s acclaimed debut novel involves more than just how the young woman’s body ended up in a lake. With Lydia’s death her seemingly close-knit family pulls apart, and the narrative explores the frustrations of her mother, who gave up her medical studies for her family, the anger and survival strategies of her two surviving siblings, and the challenges each of the Lees have faced in balancing the Chinese and American halves of the family-a stability that had seemed achieved in the blue-eyed, black-haired Lydia, the focus of her parents’ dreams.

This is among the unforgettable books I have read. On top of the gripping storyline, her clever & sensitive use of words makes reading this such a pleasure.

Started reading this book last night. Finished it this evening. I believe she was wise in teaming up with the Penguin Press. I could see how challenging it must have been for her to organize all the "time jumps" into that coherent narrative. As a person, i find her very inspiring. Well done Celeste!

I really enjoyed this book and cried over it about 4x throughout. I think it’s because I relate to every member of the family, how we all have a burden to carry, and no family is perfect.

She says she’s not Dickens, yet I’ve not come across a more gripping open to a book since Dickens!
“Lydia is dead, but they don’t know this yet.”

Funny how she said she wrote from her own experiences yet the book is about an Asian male and white female couple (why?) yet her own marriage is to a white male lol. That coupled with tweets she’s made about how she doesn’t find asian men attractive and that they remind her of her cousin reveals a lot about her psyche. She’s messed up.

I believe she wrote about an Asian male and white female couple to be able to bring up the issue of sexism and let Marilyn and James relate to each other in the sense that they were both treated differently based on something they were born as.

Hulu movie is based on her book Little fire everywhere. Here she was talking about her debut book Everything I never told you. Personally I like the first book more than the second one. Moreover I probably won’t want to watch the movie after reading the book
