Thanks for the warning, currently dealing with serious illness in the family and my own mental health struggles so maybe this is one for another day. Then you for all your great work Joe
One of my Great Aunts absolutely loved elephants. Nearly her whole house was decorated with elephants in some way, the biggest by quantity being 5,000 small black wooden elephant carvings. When she got lung cancer she planned out a lot of details for a funeral. Most of the songs were the traditional church hymns and such you might expect. But the very last song she chose was something else.... She was to be cremated, so at the end of the service when the curtains were closed to hide her coffin sat atop the Catafalque, her final choice of music that played was the theme tune to "Nelly the Elephant", this bright and cheery British childrens' TV show from 1990. The first line of the tune goes "*Nelly the Elephant packed her trunk and said goodbye to the circus.*" I have a distinct memory of my mother, who all throughout the funeral had managed to hold back her tears, bursting into laughter when the music came on, then immediatly sobbing into my Dad's shoulder. I would link to the song in question, but hearing it still makes me well up 15 years later.
This episode makes a good companion piece with Etho’s “A Tough Situation” episode of his lp. Narrative nonfiction about the little details surrounding a passing, told through the gentle medium of a chill session of Minecraft. Thanks for sharing Joe, I know I’ll be glad to have this one day
My sisters and I (all adults at the time) were getting dirty looks from the pastor at our mom's memorial service for laughing to ourselves. It only made us chuckle more since we were laughing about her disdain for preachers/pastors/priests in general. Love and condolences.
This morning my grandma had a stroke; this episode coming out today as my family are waiting to hear what the doctors are saying feels very strange. All the love to you and yours Joe!!
see, I've always wanted my funeral music to be silly, figured the last song I would have my successors play as people are readying to go to the burial would be Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees, I was also thinking of songs like Dead Inside by Younger Hunger, Living Proof by Des Rocs, and Chalk Outlines by Ren Ft. Chinchilla (although that might be too sad for the vibe I'd go with)
this time of the year brings emotions of people I lost too soon and my mental health is not great so I very much appreciate the intro, this one I'll wait to watch when I have someone safe with me
Hi Joe. I took 30 minutes and started planning my Funeral music and my wake music lists for my family to have. (Spotify is so useful for this task!) Funeral gathering music: The Call (Regina Spektor), The Rose (Bette Midler), The Last Goodbye (Billy Boyd), The Place Where Lost Things Go (Emily Blunt), Hymne à l’amour (Celine Dion). Service music: postlude-Into the West (Annie Lennox), photo montage-How Does a Moment Last Forever (Celine Dion), prelude-Main Title theme from Star Trek First Contact (Jerry Goldsmith). Hymns-Blessed Assurance (Third Day), (still working on these selections) Of corse, I will have to revisit the lists every so often and modify them. My playlists in my 20’s are very different from who I am in my 40’s, now.
Sorry you're going through this. I'm going to have to leave this for another time, appreciate the warning, but I'm going to leave the video running in the background to give watch time. I will watch properly at some point though. We do appreciate you, Joe. x
Having chosen to settle right across the Potomac from Washington, DC, my funerary choices are best summed up by the legendary musician Tom Lehrer: _When you attend a funeral,_ _It is sad to think that sooner or_ _Later those you love will do the same for you._ _And you may have thought it tragic,_ _Not to mention other adjec-_ _Tives, to think of all the weeping they will do._ _But don't you worry._ _No more ashes, no more sackcloth._ _And an armband made of black cloth_ _Will some day never more adorn a sleeve._ _For if _*_the bomb_*_ that drops on you_ _Gets your friends and neighbors too,_ _There'll be nobody left behind to grieve._ But, in earnestness, this was a beautiful meditation and self-reflection. Thank you for taking us along it.
I am sorry for Badger's loss(yours too of course), I am glad you two have each other and I hope everything will be okay for everyone at this time of year. Thank you for this, it was a nice video to help me return to some things I had packed away when things were rough and I could not handle it.
My condolences for your loss! If I were going to ask for Weird Al to be played at any funeral or wake for me, it would be "White and Nerdy", no question. But honestly, since funerals and wakes are for the comfort and closure of those left behind, I am 100% ok with leaving any musical choices to them. The only concerns I have are that my body be broken down for donatable parts, and the remains be returned to the earth rather than embalmed or preserved in any way.
I'm just over the mountains from you in NC. My father passed away 4 years ago and it fell to my brothers and I to organize everything. We did what we could to make it what he would have wanted, but the down home country Baptist funeral that very much fit the majority of my family just wouldn't work for me. Wanting to have my own passing organized, at least in the framework, so my own children don't have to scramble as we did while processing what's happened to them has been on my mind. Music is a language all its own, and one song that stands out to me as a must is "Northwest Passage". Originally by Stan Rogers, but I want the cover performed by Unleash the Archers. To me the song is a tribute to life's choices. What paths were taken, and those that were passed over. What the future of your choices will look like. Whenever I hear it I think of my father, but also my children one day standing together as I did. My heart is with you, I love your work and the sentiment going into this episode.
A lot of who I see Joe hills as through these edited munecraft social media platform videos as is an unconventional courageous person, and I almost said dare to be stupid aloud. Good shout.
Strangely, a Weird Al song that could fit is "The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota". It's not too upbeat, not too fast. There is just something about it I think. I hope in this stressful and sad time you have the time and space to look after yourselves and each other and keep good memories in mind.
That's definitely a respectable choice, though "Don't Go Placing Phony Calls" would have been an iconic JoeHills pick too. At the end of the night, I just admire his restraint not going with "Albuquerque."
While I completely understand why you say you wouldn't want to use a song like American pie because it's about the loss of 3 musical artists I offer you a counter thought for it. It's meaningful to you. It's a lovely song. You have memories and happy memories at that of singing with your family. If you want your funeral plans to celebrate you and the things and people you loved then you should include it. It could simply be presented as such a song you loved because it's beautiful and you had beautiful memories attached to it. I am very sorry for your family's loss and wish you all the best in the process of loss ❤
If someone is totally mad about something let's say a tv show (just to name something : The A-team or Spongebob or whatever) i think it's totally ok to play a song from that show as long as it fit the theme, and doesn't need to be a sad song persé, could be a full on party song. It fits with the person so no problem, same if the person is a total party animal, mix it in there, celebrate the persons life. (or your life, if you're making your own list)
I think that joy and laughter is my favourite kind of funeral. We don't need to enforce sadness, a celebration of their life feels much more fulfilling and cry-laughing brings us together.
I didn't think this would be a video I'd laugh out loud to, however 10:44 and 20:04 both got me 😂 as usual, Joe, you approach such a sensitive subject in your own unique and beautiful way. Here's to the next 100+ years of you doing this but mainly, i want to comment to say my thoughts are with Badger and her family at this time ❤
This was a really nice video, heartfelt and funny and philosophical and practical all in one. I'm sorry for y'all's loss. I'd never thought of minecraft youtubers as being like talk radio hosts but I really, really see it now that you mentioned it. Thanks for the company on late nights. I'd have to think on a proper funeral set but for me, Iron & Wine and Ben Bridwell's cover of Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place) would certainly be there. Absolutely gorgeous song and cover.
I have been tonsome memeorials. Laughter is always a plus if it's laughing with the departed. Give them your funniest faves and make the whole bunch howl with laughter. They will love you even more. The best ones always had everyone laughing together in love and community even as they grieved together. NB: It's okay for you to make people laugh at your own funeral only.
as an iteration on this idea, i see a funeral playkist as largely being songs that the funeral goers associate with the deceased. so, you can make this playlist, then pick different people and each person gets a song, and you spend dedicated time with each admiring that song together. that way, not only are you putting the work to pick the songs, but youre also making them more heartfeld for the survivors. i see funerals as being about the living more than the dead
When I read this comment, I assumed we were talking John Williams. Having made it to the end of the video, I stand corrected, but my opinion is unchanged.
Giving a like for the mention of The Adventures of Pete and Pete. I loved that show so much when I was a kid, and I feel like nobody ever talks about it.
You have a very optimistic view on how many more decades you plan on being around. And based on the songs you selected (very good well thought out choices, I might add), I'd say we're about the same age. But to be perfectly honest, I don't plan on being around for more than 3 decades more. Anything more would be a bonus.
One of the songs I definitely want to play is Garth Brooks "The Dance". It's a great song about regrets from your past but also understanding if you had not been there, you would not be here. Also Green Day and Weird Al are must have musicians as well
I had a friend from high school who they played the music from a Cirque du Soleil show during the first half of his wake, since he loved it so much. I'm sure it was somewhat curated, but it tends to be somber, instrumental pieces
The engineering thing in software get me too 😂 especially because where I am engineer is a protected term. And there is a specific software engineering degree different from comp sci. (4y instead of 3y ect.) But not a single person in HR for any company in all of north america has a single clue about this. They don't know it exists let alone what the difference is.
Your comments about trouble doing things due to your health condition reminded me that I decided I'm no longer going to not just tell people "I'm on my period. I'm not going.". And my dad in his '70's or whatever says to me in response suddenly "Don't those stop sometime?" 🤔Yeah dad they do stop sometime. Thanks.
i appreciate the exercise (and have completed it several times myself), but i've come to realize that funeral services are ALL about the people who are still alive and how they want/need to grieve. it doesn't mean don't do the exercise or make the video with your plans - but if you try to impress anything upon them, it's that they should do whatever it is that they need to do to let go and move on to have the rest of their lives in a happy, healthy way.
its a part of doing consistent performance. higher voices are easier to distinguish through recorded media, and easier to get more dynamic range from. it also gives you a noce way to sepaeate a performance voice from your non-performance voice. if you look at anyones (male) early vs late work, they move from low to high.
"She Don't Use Jelly", wonderful song by the way, should be attributed to The Flaming Lips, not Ben Folds. This episode is cathartic. Your openness is beautiful. Love to you and yours.
I know the first and final songs I'd want at my funeral. The first would be I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor and the final one would be Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin.
Dewey Cox GREAT movie. Love Beautiful Ride. I would honored to be present at your funeral while Dewey Cox played, and Ghostface Killa could maybe come in and do a little rap too like the movie
Was just thinking that the first song I ever bought with my own money was Revenge by CaptainSparklez and TryHardNinja. Not sure it’s a great funeral/wake song. The first album I bought with my own money was Multiply by Ed Sheeran. Afire Love from there would probably be a good choice. I also feel like I would like to have it begin with Rising Kingdom and end with Fallen Kingdom.
Thanks for the warning, currently dealing with serious illness in the family and my own mental health struggles so maybe this is one for another day. Then you for all your great work Joe

That etho video moved me to tears. For like an hour and a half.
My sisters and I (all adults at the time) were getting dirty looks from the pastor at our mom's memorial service for laughing to ourselves. It only made us chuckle more since we were laughing about her disdain for preachers/pastors/priests in general.

_Later those you love will do the same for you._

_Not to mention other adjec-_
_Tives, to think of all the weeping they will do._
_But don't you worry._
_No more ashes, no more sackcloth._
_And an armband made of black cloth_
_Will some day never more adorn a sleeve._
_For if _*_the bomb_*_ that drops on you_
_Gets your friends and neighbors too,_
_There'll be nobody left behind to grieve._
But, in earnestness, this was a beautiful meditation and self-reflection. Thank you for taking us along it.

thank you for this video, sending my best to everyone whose experiencing loss
got to 11:32 and then paused fully planned my funeral and chose the songs that will play and how the ceremony will be held
I keep pausing the video to listen-or re-listen-to the songs he cites.
this was a really great video joe. thanks for making me think about something ive never thought about before
My condolences for your loss!

3:25 "It would be stupid to not have a Weird Al song!"
Well Joe, I think you must Dare to be Stupid.
A lot of who I see Joe hills as through these edited munecraft social media platform videos as is an unconventional courageous person, and I almost said dare to be stupid aloud. Good shout.
A beautiful dedication 💕 sorry for your loss
what a beautiful episode. exploring your own thought for after youre gone is such a hard thing to do. sending much kindness to Badger

My condolences for your loss Joe and Badger 😢
it was incredibly nice getting to know your story through this video, thanks joe

I fell asleep watching this, woke up again for the last part, had no clue what joe was rambling about, but still enjoyed every bit of it.
Joe you can have Jurassic Park if you want, you don’t have to earn it 😌
When I read this comment, I assumed we were talking John Williams. Having made it to the end of the video, I stand corrected, but my opinion is unchanged.
but if the opportunity shows itself 100% create a theme park full of prehistoric lizards
Joe, you are a delight. Thank you for handling such a sensitive topic with such grace, and my sincere condolences on the loss of your father in law. ❤
Picking your own songs to spare the potential pain to your partner in the future is admirable😭
Sorry for your loss, one Joe to another
Giving a like for the mention of The Adventures of Pete and Pete. I loved that show so much when I was a kid, and I feel like nobody ever talks about it.
i remember talking about this vid on stream, and sorry for you and badgers lost. great vid as always !
Parking lot Chaulk Art... thats a fantastic idea to incorporate Xisumas pixel arts and keeping that part of Holmdel more true to the source material.
You have a very optimistic view on how many more decades you plan on being around. Homdel in progress looks so good

this is almost unrelated, but i love the phrase 'people who shaped the world as people'. something to think about
For my dad's memorial we had all of the records he loved listening too playing in the background.
Thank you for the warning. Lost a friend recently and it's still a bit raw.
Thanks.
18:50 "For Good" from Wicked would actually be nice for a funeral 😄
Today is the anniversary of a particular funerary event for me, so thank you for the warning.
This is such a beautiful build 😮

How has this man's voice went from deep 13 years ago to being squeaky

"I do not have an engineering degree. And I have not been to Japan" LOL totally agree tho XD
There's an american labor folk song called Joe Hill, or The Death of Joe Hill. Bruce Springsteen has a good verison uploaded to youtube.
to keep the alliteration you could call your spouse your spectacular or superb spouse. both keep the s+p sound at the beginning of the word
Dewey Cox GREAT movie. Love Beautiful Ride. I would honored to be present at your funeral while Dewey Cox played, and Ghostface Killa could maybe come in and do a little rap too like the movie
Making me realise my music taste of japanese idol songs, video game soundtracks and Mili wouldn't exactly make for great funeral music.
I can’t really do anything to help except *virtual hug*

Was just thinking that the first song I ever bought with my own money was Revenge by CaptainSparklez and TryHardNinja.
Not sure it’s a great funeral/wake song.

I also feel like I would like to have it begin with Rising Kingdom and end with Fallen Kingdom.
You should have ren record amazing grace it's the exact chords as house of the rising sun and we know he can sing that well.
I have a spotify playlist titled: Play This When I Die. I know exactly were you are coming from. Also, sorry for your loss.

If anyone needs one, or just wants one, I have enough hugs to spare
