A cup of margarine sounds like a lot for a coffee cake. I think 1 stick, or 1/2 cup, would be plenty. Since it was supposed to be creamed with the sugar & eggs, softened margarine would work better. It sounds good--any chocolate cake with coffee and boiling water should be delicious and moist!

yum Rita. Now I am hungry. Rita, can you look for the date of that book? Sounds like it is a bit of Arkansas history. Thanks. (still hungry.)

Hi, Rita
Hello Donna, come and have some cake with me.
Can you use butter instead of margarine?
I would think so. the specific recipe just kept using margarine, so I made it as written. Butter is better for you than margarine.
