  • Brand new from Orvis for 2024 is the Helios D. This is the successor to the Helios 3 and it comes extremely familiar, but with some upgrades. Orvis is claiming 25% better accuracy and 10% lighter swing weight; both welcomed improvements.

Had the opportunity to cast one today- absolutely beautiful...shot 95' of flyline with little effort. The rod is light, yet smooth, powerful and very accurate.

Im sure its fantastic, the 3D sure was, but how in the hell did they have like 7 years between 3 and 4 and they literally launched an IDENTICAL looking rod....save for the short section of grey. The white may be good marketing but I'd bet most people want their new $1K+ rod to look different than a rod they've owned since march 2018...

this week in FLA.... You forgot to mention 25% stronger compared to the previous H3

I did a quick test of the H4 8D compared to the Hardy Marksman Z. The H4 has considerably more power and is very smooth. The Hardy wasn't as smooth and lacked a bit of power. If I were making a buying decision today, I'd have bought the Hardy as the Orvis' 20% premium is a show-stopper. The H4 is an evolutionary upgrade from the H3, so a $50 price bump would strike me as fair, but not 20%.

I love my Helios 3D 8 wt. Looking to get a 7 wt. I know you picked up a 7 wt Marksman Z. Just wondering your thoughts between the two. If the H4 was available when the Z came out, which one would you choose and why?

They say it is the lightest rod they've ever built? I think this rod is over 3 oz and I have one from the 1980's (their trout series) that is 8 foot, 6 weight, 1 7/8 oz! So it is absolutely not the lightest rod they've made... are they referring to swing weight? Maybe it is more balanced than the old one I have, but definitely not lighter.

how do you think it compares to the Asquith? You're correct that it's getting very close to the same price point

Great question, it feels lighter and faster, but extremely similar accuracy.

No hook keeper and white label still there, 2 big complaints from last series that didn’t get changed, for a product that’s not enough better to be worth that much money. Sorry, but it’s a big pass.

They need to lose that decal. It's horrendous.

They're far casting and accurate. They're too stiff, they're ugly, they're expensive and the aluminum tube is dumb it's loud it scratches and tsa cant xray it so they tear the rod out and jam it in. This will cast farther on a lawn, but a rod that loads quicker will cast farther in fishing conditions. A Scott Session is better, USA made, AND half the price. I have both.

If you're not in the top 10% economically, these rods are not for you.

I have a Sage SLT 490-4 and the 389-4 I have had these from new, both these rods together cost less than the new Orvis. At the time these were the top of the range Sage rods. I have fished meny rods on rivers, even the new Sage trout ll and the Orvis helios 3 in the 4wt, but I would never part with my SLTs as i don't think there's rods out there that can match these. All these new rods are only advertisement hype, how meny youtubers out there are not, sponsored by these company's and give an honest review about these rods, not meny if any. If your after a top end rod then look at older models, as there will be hardly any difference between the new and last years rods its all about advertisement and there good at it.
