I made my own paint stand/organizer using the method from this video (ruclips.net/video/rmxzSCfaVyE/видео.html). In my build on this, I black bombed the finished stand with black spray paint, and trimmed and glued black foam core board on the back to hold the bottles in place. My stand holds around 100 paints. It's 'portable', in that it's easy enough to grab and carry, but since it's made out of PVC, it's comparatively heavy.

One of the things I use is old product displays from the craft store, I just went in and asked if they were getting rid of any of their displays and if I could have one. Granted I am a frequent customer and it’s a pretty small local company but they were nice enough to give me a display that used to hold chalk pastels sold individually! I hope this idea helps anyone on a budget!

I make my own. I really like the old style toolboxes that tradesmen would make themselves. So I go to thrift shops and yard sales, and find cheap "vintage" boxes of some sort -wood or metal - that looks like it could be usable. From there I just take scraps of wood I have, usually pine or spruce, and fashion various holders. If you can find a good box or one you can sand clean and repaint or repair, that cuts a huge amount of cost down, and effort. A decent sized box is going to be twenty dollars of material anyways, plus hinges, latch, paint, clear coat and fasteners. On top of cutting and glueing/nailing it together. Why bother? Plus you then have a nice custom box that's as sturdy and as finished as you want - either raw mdf, or clear coated or stained wood - with all the space for exactly what you use.

For the majority of my paints and brushes I use the Broken Token Paint Rack, I also recycle packaging.
Like, I use the box the Citadel Mini Holder comes in for stuff, the box my Nolzurs Beholder came in, and any time I get small items from my store they come in a little brown paper bag that I cut the bottoms off and store specific paints schemes in.
As well as using the little display boxes dice come in with some blue tack for DIY miniature holders

Hey just a tip to make your life a bit easier. When you use your paint just put a dab or dot of paint on the top of the lid so you can see the paint colour when looking at a glance. Also it gives you a good idea what the paint looks like when it dries as it maybe darker orlighter when wet vs dry.

I would recommend painting the tip of the dropper bottles (or bottom if you have them upside down), yes you can see the paint in the bottle, but if you haven't used a color for a few months, the color you see in the bottle wont be the correct color because the paints slowly separate. Plus the dried paint is slightly different color then the wet paint, so you get a more accurate representation of what you will be getting on your models.

I just got two of these today (I am a Dutchie, so shipping is cheap) ) and put them together right away. You don't need to glue everything together, just the three outside edges and the small front strips and done. My Army Painter paint bottles look really wll in them. I even used some of the spaces for small tools.
I am thinking about using a black primer to make them look even cooler.
So thanks for the tip :)

I used TTCombat storage system for 48 vallejo paints. Then when I had about 60 paints I decided to buy new one. I chose 100 vallejo paints rack that stored paints horizontally and After about 2 months I decided that I do not want them stored in that way (I had 94 paints at that time anyway).
I went crazy and decided to design my own MDF paint rack and my brother in law cut them out for me. They can store 260 paints as well some 60ml vallejo bottles for primers :)

Since the plastic of paint bottles tends to be cloudy, the first thing I do with a new bottle of paint (after adding a shaker/shaking it) is to paint the top half of the lid - everything from the tip to the grip lines. You can still see the lids, but the top part is the paint itself, as it will look dry.

    A couple points...
    1. I bought several laser-cut paint rack/drawer sets from a British fellow on eBay RIGHT AFTER the initial Brexit vote (the GBP kind of sank for a bit after the vote so it was cheap as chips...) which are still used daily!
    2. I also invested in acrylic nail polish racks from Amazon.ca. Each can hold citadel, P3, Vallejo dropper bottles perfectly; each tier can hold something like 12-15 bottles of paint, and a 6-tier rack is like $20 CDN. :D

I don't know if it was intentional by ShiftingSands, but one reason to store paints "lid down" is to stop them from drying out. More of a problem with VOC based paints - but a real problem.

By the way, I’ll let you know a little bit about myself.
I don’t pay miniatures, I’m a Star Wars 1:18 Customizer. This means the 4 inch figures it a lot of people grew playing with. I also build custom dioramas to display my figures in.
I love watching your videos because you give me lots of tips to use towards my dioramas.
For pain’s at the moment I’m using a lot of CraftSmart from Michael’s. But one of the employees there recently turned me onto the small bottles called golden fluids which are a high pigment acrylic. As well, He’s turned me onto Liquitex basics which is another acrylic paint and it comes in something that looks similar to a toothpaste or handcream tube.
For storing my paints, at the moment I’m using a Råksog utility cart, which is a lot like the ones that hair salon uses for perms or hair dying. You can also see some at Michael’s which are tricked out with all kinds of add-ons
    www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/raskog-utility-cart-black-90333976/
and inside each basket I put a Antonius five compartment organizer which holds the paints really well. It fits nicely although there is a few inches of space to one side which works out pretty good for putting some extra little bits and bobs to go with the paints. Are use it to store my 118ml bottles of white gray and black that I use for different washes. (The cheap-ass Dollarama stuff)
    www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/antonius-basket-insert-transparent-50043573/
Anyway it’s quite a different system than what you use but some people might find it interesting or even useful to take a look at How I’m currently storing my paint

I'm pretty sure Citadel actually designs the pots to malfunction, waste paint, and tip over. I use them because I have very little Vallejo selection in my area, and I dislike the P3 line's pots too.
I replaced Retributer Armour, Stormhost Silver, and Leadbelcher with VGC Gold, Silver, and Gunmetal... It's not just the bottles that are better, I get much much better coverage with Vallejo Game Colour.
I'm jealous of your selection here, heheh. It's hard to order this stuff online here in BC, and harder to find it in stores.

How does this affect the paint in the bottle? Does it cause the nozzle to be clogged with dried paint when you go to use the paint?? The more I use dropper bottles the less I like them because the nozzles clog and it seems to waste a lot of paint even when you need just a little.

Open source, the file used to create these is parametric, which means you can input measurements for the size of the paint dropper, along with the X/Y of the size you want and it will produce the designs you need to laser cut them.
Downside is you do need access to a laser cutter.

Cool - unfortunately, I decided on the cheap option and is currently making my own with 5mm foamcore and a whole lot of hot glue. It looks like shit as it is right now, but I don't care - it will hold my paints, and a lot of them - 8 rows of 28 bottle holes will hopefully cover all my needs. And, if I need more, I will just glue on more rows.

been using citadel colour for over 2 decades for my sculptures and crafting projects. The paints are great for sticking power(after the spray basecoat of chaos black),where other acrylics I've used just rub off during the painting process. citadel paints are very expensive, and 1/3 of the $200 set I ordered were already dried up in the terribly designed pots, where I spend a lot of time adding water and stirring up with a toothpick : CITADEL COLOUR POTS ARE CRAP and a waste of money. Can you recommend a less expensive, good paint brand that will not rub off or , or just direct me to one of your vids that covers this? sorry, I'm lazy. I quite like your vids and after watching them have been collecting cardboard to maybe one day make something cool ; ).

Drywall screw and washer through two of the holes. Fastest way but then you can’t put bottle tip first in those spots. Alternative would be to mount strips to wall and glue hang the tabs on that. Not as easy/fast and harder to take down if you want to move them.

Do you have some advice for keeping them in good shape between sessions, and how you mix them to get them back in a usable form? Or can you recommend a video that can help in this regard? Thanks very much, and I really love your videos and admire your talent!

I use a mixer. I have a review video about it. Works well.

@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial OK...watching that one now. Unfortunately, I have already added stainless steel agitators in my paints (which I picked up at Canadian Tire), but so far no worries about rust. Those beads sound interesting though. I will look at picking up that sharker soon. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Awesome channel!

    Hi Black Magic Craft!
Do you plan to do anything on Frostgrave? I think the setting is far more interesting for classical dungeon adventures than the game itself. Nonetheless, snowy ruins of a lost city should be interesting for many people?!

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  5 лет назад

I will be playing my first game of Frostgrave in a a few days, so some builds for it are going to happen for sure. Although I may actually avoid going with snow themes to keep any new terrain useable in other games/settings.

Cool! Sounds nice! I guess, snow cover is somewhat special. Maybe baking soda or flour would work for "temporal snow"? Please do not sneeze...

Any tips on wall mounting the racks? They don't really seem to be designed for it.

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  5 лет назад +1

The quick way is two screws with washers, through two of the holes. This means you can’t store paint tip first in those slots. Other way would be mounting a wood strip to wall then hanging with the tabs and some glue, but that’s more permanent than I wanted.

@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial Hmm.. It hadn't occurred to me to use washers and the holes, but since I'm storing my bottles tip first, I'll have to get creative. Thanks, though :)

Hey question about your clear coat that you use. On your store page it lists "Krylon Crystal Clear Matte" and links to "Matte Finish". There's also a "Crystal Clear" spray. I'm guessing you meant the one you linked, but the name is confusing because it's a mish-mash of both products. It looks like the difference is matte vs not. So the question, the one linked is the proper one, right?

It's a little tricky because what I find on the shelf in Canada I don't find exactly the same thing on the USA Amazon. The stuff I have is a Crystal Clear Matte Finish, so I linked to the Matte Finish one on Amazon. The second link you provide, while it is Crystal Clear, it's also GLOSS which you don't want.

Can I ask how exactly you attach them to the wall? I'd love a similar solution but I don't want to start drilling holes in the wall to accomodate.

You’re not going to hang shelves full of paint without screwing them to a wall.

I'm not. I don't own citadel paints....well I have like two metallics, no need to transfer those two. And I have the washes, but I washes are the one thing I prefer to have in pots over dropper bottles.
