I didn't realize how lucky I was; a friend had seen them years prior to me at some magical festival at a castle in France; I was in Lyon wandering the streets with my other friend who is a native, and out the corner of my eye spotted a poster with their name on it. Phoned the friend who had seen them (and mentioned them) and inquired as to whether or not they were worth the time; he essentially told me my life depended on it. 30-40 of us audience, on a boat on the river, and these boys played like their lives depended on it, and I can't stress enough just how important it is to act within time. Best of luck and hope you fuel the fire of your dreams.
+AmAtronliean I do not pretend that I am an expert on the topic, but as far as I can tell from the Wikipedia article I just read, bepop was an anti-swing jazz movement---less danceable, more esoteric.
No, it's not. You obviously don't know much about jazz if you believe this is the peak of "hard swing" (that's not even a genre). It's a great, fun contemporary piece, but tell them what you said and they refer you to hundreds of other hard bop and bebop recordings.
*shrug* okay, beebop then. you must not have read my disclaimer, or else you did, and you got angry anyway. you know, it is possible to correct someone without getting so uptight about it. and i'm happy you cleared it up!
alphafemale99 Your "disclaimer" is referring to your knowledge on the names of these genres (that's at least what I got from that), I was talking about your claim that this is the best example of this type of music. Either way, I was not trying to be uptight or angry and try to offend you. I apologize if that's how you took it. If I come off aggressive, please know that it isn't intentional. But I don't believe you should be saying stuff like "this is exactly EXACTLY everything that a hard swing jazz composition should ever hope to be." if you know you "aren't an expert on the topic".
I love love this band,..the kid, (I can call him that, I'm old), he so reminds me of the greats, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Burt Bacharach, Sergio Mendes, Count Baise,..I swear, just so elegant, and smooth, the horns, someone else said they just love coming here to hear and see them, don't know if I'll ever get to experience them live,..but getting them here, is the next very best thing,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
I love this song so much, one of my favourite tracks of theirs. Watching this reminds me of seeing them live earlier this year, was the best night of my life and easily the best gig i've ever been to. Actually got to go backstage and meet them and get their autographs, they were such heroes. Love soil and "pimp"!
They blew us away at the Vancouver Jazz Fest tonight! The videos don't do them justice, if you get the chance to see them live, take my word for it and don't miss out!
This is an AWESOME song with an AWESOME piano part! I love it! I only made that comment because the video I watched before this one talked about "proper" playing, but anyone who knows who Thelonius Monk is is interested in what it SOUNDS like and not how it's ACCOMPLISHED. I guess the ends justify the means, when we're talkin' tunes.
@Hitamaru That is true that most people aren't born with a musical ear. I wasn't born with a musical ear, but I was able to train myself to play by ear. Trust me, it takes a lot of work, but if you are willing to put the work into it, it will be rewarding. The first thing I learned by ear was "Don't Stop Believing," and it took me an hour of replaying the song over and over until I learned the piano part.
i never heard of these guys loved them do love the song love the video they all ripped it umm defff like the flavor 2 keep it up yall making it bigger then u thinck keep contact
i saw their live performance in java jazz 2009, and when i know that they will perform in java jazz 2012, I REALLY GOT EXCITED! kinda crazy jazz, but they have Mega-Awesome skill!! please come back to indonesia :)
the technique that he describes is accurate too, as a pianist myself i can say that changing fingers is more relaxed, still the single finger seems to work for the piece so theres not really an issue there
@Hitamaru Yes, I agree that the piano solo is cool. Instead of looking for sheet music for it, I would recommend learning it by ear. My strategy is to listen to the song over and over until you memorize how the piano solo goes. Then, once you have memorized the whole solo, then you can try to work it out on the piano. Good luck!
I've been coming back to this JAM for years!!!! I can only dream I'll get to a live set one day

the technique that he describes is accurate too, as a pianist myself i can say that changing fingers is more relaxed, still the single finger seems to work for the piece so theres not really an issue there
i love michiko to hatchin they should do a season two
Jazz is cool !
@Heroinedown I know. But it's good to see that this people always kept their ambitions together and did what they wanted to do no matter what!
@Hitamaru Yes, I agree that the piano solo is cool. Instead of looking for sheet music for it, I would recommend learning it by ear.
