  • Does the SupeRadio live up to the hype or can you get a similar spec'd radio for less money?

    -----------------------------------------------------
I have a part 15 low power AM transmitter. It's not very powerful, but I wanted to see how far reliable clear reception goes. Driving around in the car doesn't work out too well since the car pukes out loads of electrical interference, which biases real world reception range. I have some portable radios, but none of them work or work well. So it's off to eBay to find a highly sensitive and highly selective portable radio.
I remembered people hyping up the GE SupeRadio II as being the ultimate radio for its selectivity as well as its ability to pull in stations without the need for a external antenna. I found all kinds of SupeRadios on eBay, but all of them were kind of expensive. A related listing resulted in me purchasing a cheaper alternative, a Optimus 12-603A which is related more to the SupeRadio III than the 2, but I wanted to see if I can get the performance of a SupeRadio without the SupeRadio price tag.

I have never messed with a GE superadio 2 but I have two GE superadio 3's and I like them very much.
I attached a big solar panel on the back of one of them and it plays nicely on solar.
The big panel means it still works well in cloudy or shaded conditions.
It is the best performing solar radio I have ever seen.

I have an Optimus for a bathroom radio and it performs great in that capacity -- good sounding FM, batteries last a year and I only paid $5 for it at a yard sale. If you're not a radio enthusiast, it's fine.
For band-scanning MW DX stations, I'll stick with the Panasonic RF-2200.

The Optimus radio really did have better audio quality than the SRII. I live in a very over radioed market, so it's difficult to use here. There's not a empty space on the FM dial here.

Not a problem here in Montana. I can barely hear FM from the next town over -- too many mountains in the way.

I've got a GE Superadio 1 and a GE Superadio 3. They both work really well, although the Superadio 1 looks and performs better. But for general all around listening to local stations in the Los Angeles area, I really like the Superadio 3. Nice bass response and AM has the Wide / Narrow switch. I do wish all the GE Superadios had the Wide Narrow switch.

I've not had the good fortune of owning one. I've heard the same from different people about the One.

I own a 2880A, 2880B, a super radio II and the III. Want to add a 603 to my collection. Would you consider walking us through an alignment of any of these models? Thank you for posting.

At some point, yes. Sadly, it might be a while before I'm able to post videos of that sort of detail. I'm still in college.

I bought a GE Superadio II at a swap meet for 35 dollars in not perfect condition, but great for daily use. I since bought another 2 on eBay in pristine condition and I’m reluctant to remove it from the plastic in the original box

I started thinking about George and Kramer in the car. George says, would you just pick a station!

GE SR-II by far. The SR-III is really poor.

We used IIIs in a facility that was subject to incredible signal attenuation from thick concrete walls. it was the only thing that would pick up any station. It would have been nice to have a II to compare it to. Everything here is so over-radio here.
