Blancpain fifty fathoms is famous for the bubbled bezel
Indeed ..it reminds me of a lavatory seat.
That's why it never really appealed to me, though I appreciate that it is a masterpiece to some.
I very much like the GMT with the bubble bezel, and while I don't normally like white dials, that version of it seemed very appealing.
It’s a lovely looking watch in my opinion and the white dial whilst not to my taste clearly is appealing to others.
This watch in one of the endless AliExpress sales you could not go wrong with .
One thing about the sterile case backs: great area for engraving for gifting/presentation.
That’s a good point that I never thought of. Thanks.
That GMT is gorgeous. It’d be nice to see a slightly different handset option, like they offer on some of their other vintage homages.
would love that datejust at around 42mm, would add even more wrist presence
The left one I like too, no cola colours, no unneeded extra hands :) The casing is a bit too blingbling though, want a black casing.. And I want a black NATO strap with it :) I have the money for an 8€ Watch.... so never mind.. :)
Merry Xmas and happy new year, here’s to a better year for you in ‘23
I will drink to that
Great review and I like SM very much - you get a lot for not a lot of money. I have both these watches but the GMT has the ceramic bezel which I prefer on this watch. I love the black MOP face with the presidential bracelet as it really is a looker without being too over the top. Regarding the ‘sharpness’ I also have a BB homage by SM which is lovely but the bezel edges are overly ‘grippy’ shall we say. Happy Christmas all.
Thank you Don. The MOP dial just does it for me every time!
A few small original design points, a caseback featuring an aquatic animal or deep sea diver, and SM could have a very desirable cult piece, particularly with the well set up movements we've seen.
They used to do a caseback with an embossed shark on it.
Seems they have dropped all this and just gone for the plain look.
These blank case backs wouldn't be bad if they offered an engraving option. Its a nice blank slate for a inscription for a wedding or graduation gift or work award. Engraved watch backs used to be so popular and were a neat part of each watch's story.
Mike all the best for Xmas and have a happy New Year. Here’s to a healthy 2023. Keep well from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Thank you Bruce. All the best to you sir for 2023
They should do this GMT with the nh34 movement so the date wheel is in line with the indices and it is cheaper... Why can't San Martin get it right the first time around.
Thank You for your most thorough reviewing .. when many lesser others do a superficial job with seeming HOURS on measuring head dimensions after fixing their cameras on their faces. I am happy to pay decent prices for decent watches and do appreciate San Martins' quality .. BUT their pricing has a whiff of the indecent lately eh. - They are excellent & presentable watches to be proud wearing .. BUT I have the similar Pagani Design version of the fixed/fluted bezel unit on an anniversery type bracelet that I remember as costing around half the price of the "S&M".
My 'Original' SM with the blue face as you reviewed works brilliantly still although the crown is stiff - did you ever get the screws loose on the top face??
Hi Martin. Thank you for your compliment. I’m just a watch nut that just gives my own honest opinion. Some people think reviewers are bias or even freeloaders but I just like to give my thoughts. I don’t ask for watches they just turn up and that’s the truth!
You can’t compare PD to SM as they are so different. SM despite stealing all the designs make them to a higher standard than PG.
as with all these brands I would not stand by their warranty though . If you get a bad one I suspect getting it dealt with is not that straightforward.
As for the blue original, still one of my favs and I also now have the same case with a different dial they sent me which will be on the channel in the new year.
Really nice casework finishing.
I never tried to remove the screws on the bezel , i suspect they are either dummies or are glued in.
To thread them in such a way for them all to line up like they do would be very difficult to achieve
Thanks.
The date frame I'm not sure about.
Great review of the GMT model. When the version 2 came out I wanted to pull the trigger but was hesitant because there was no date (and price). When I saw this current version with the date, I got the white dial version (and a sale price). I agree with you on screwing the crown back in, it feels a little rough. I do own one of the earlier popular SM (the 6200 vintage diver), and the crown screws in much smoother.
Thanks for your comment. I need to take a look at the crown setup and see if I can solve it. I have used dental floss before on the threads to remove any debris.
This sharpness thing
gets trotted out all the time by people who like to find something wrong. A crisp finish is a sign of high quality. It would the easy for SanMartin to round off all these edges like other poorer quality watches. They know what quality finishing is and I don’t think they are going to change that for whinges with tissue paper skin.
Amen to that sir. I’m from an engineering background and good close tolerance machining produces sharp edges, you can de-burr them but doing too this too much will just round the edges.
Like you say people like to pick fault and you always will hear more negative stuff than positive as people who have a bad product will complain and moan more. You get a good one you are pleased but don’t should about that fact. My conclusion with most complaints on anything be it a watch or a car is to just make your own opinion
The amplitude on that timegraph reading is quite low for a new watch. I would expect at least 280 degrees on dial up position. Was the movement fully wound before the measurement?
No I only wound them several turns. You can’t fully wind automatics and actually know it’s fully wound as the mainspring will just slip on the barrel wall. Focus for me is on the overall trace as that will tell me all I need to know about the health.
Obviously if the amp is 200 or below then I would be more concerned with a power or train issue.
@@mywatchreviews Please, try giving the movement 60 turns with the crown, and check the trace. For sure, you cannot overwind the automatic watch. After 60 turns one should be sure the movement is properly wound. On my watches, the rate may be significantly different between the mid power and the fully wound use case.
@@Zeeraha I know a thing or two about watch repair just look at my other channel as it’s all about restoring watches and servicing movements. Amplitude is not everything, poor amp is easily noticed as is a movement with a fault. I can tell by looking at the trace. Sometimes a fully wound watch can hide trace errors that would only show at 1/2 power
@@mywatchreviews I follow and watch your content and I know you make a good work :) In this case I was really curious if San Martins have such low amplitude in the fully wound state. In my opinion, when fully wound the amplitude of less than 250 degrees should not be acceptable on a brand new watch. Actually, I would expect from brands such as San Martin that time keeping performance is not so good. For that price point, one can get a new Orient model. What San Martin offers better here is the case finish and AR coating.
@@Zeeraha okay. Today I will wind both watches fully and report back to you the amplitude.
I am sceptical that most of these micro brands regulate the movements. I think they are just putting the movements in out of the packet so to speak.
Hello. Bezel platinum plated or polished SS??
Polished stainless
It may be the way you have set the GMT up, but the 24 hour hand is running an hour behind the 12 hour! (set to BST, perhaps?) Rather expensive. The other one with the case-back off, are there two unused screw-holes in one of the plates, at 19.59, approximately where the 10 baton would be on the face?
Hi pal. I didn’t set the GMT to any time zone. For me it’s a useless complication as I do not need to track any time zone. That is probably the case for many a customer. I view GMT as just a phase we are going though. Soon it will be moon phases again! There is only so much that can be done on a watch. Gmt is not much of a technical complication as it’s just really a modified hour wheel .
As for the holes I will have to view the footage. If it’s on the movement then it’s just the way it’s designed so it will fit any case design I guess.
@@mywatchreviews I thought that as the bezel counts to 24, that the GMT hand would run at half-speed as compared to the hour hand, so twice round for the hour hand is one day, but the gmt hand rotates once, to count to 24 - for the 24 hrs per day.
@@mywatchreviews it’s not a useless complication. I live in Australia and my family is in the UK. They send me messages and texts when I am asleep.
I have the GMT hand set to GMT so I can see if it’s 3am in the UK to text them back.🤣
@@goldfools5445 it’s not useless I know but for me it is as I don’t use the function but I realise others do.
Brilliant to text at 3am 😀
