- Ford T18 Complete Rebuild!
When doing the 4 speed swap for my Willys Jeep I realized there was not much information for rebuilding the ford t18 transmission. These are excellent, heavy duty transmissions used for years in several vehicles. Jeep and International Scout had their variations but parts typically do not interchange well between any of the 3. This is a pretty straightforward rebuild and should be an easy weekend project!

Awesome video! These videos are not easy to produce. It takes a ton of time and effort before, during and after the actual rebuild to do them right. I (we) appreciate the effort!! These tutorials give backyard mechanics (like me) the confidence to tackle the big jobs and save A TON of money. Thank you again and keep them coming!
I really appreciate the feedback! I do put a lot of time into these videos hoping I can help others and save them some time! Thanks again!
This is a FANTASTIC video, thank you! Straightforward explanations, great camera work, zero unnecessary bologna talk, no camera shaking - inducing nausea to the viewer, excellent job referencing the schematic. You nailed it buddy!!
Really appreciate it! Glad I could pass on the information!
@@SevenBarSalvagehey man I have an issue with 2nd gear after rebuilding my t18. Is it possible to put the synchro in wrong? It won’t go into 2nd gear from a dead stop but will go into all other gears and I can’t down gear into it but if I match road speed with gear speed I can get it into gear.
Saving this for when I get around to rebuilding the transmission on my 1983 F-350. This will help a ton thank you!
Glad to hear!
Good thing you paid attention to that washer that sits against the front bearing on the input shaft. That raised part is critical. If it's put on backwards, it seals that front bearing instead of allowing oil in. In a short time, the washer will actually end up basically either friction welding itself to the front bearing or just melting apart, sending metal through your transmission. (That's how my T90 was destroyed by the guy that parked it 30 years ago. Same kind of front bearing setup.)
Good video, very helpful for if/when I decide the T90 3 speed is too limited for modern roads.
It’s crazy how little details like that can make or break a build. I appreciate it!
Great video. I know your from the South because i can understand you and there were dirt dobber nests on the front case.
Haha I appreciate it!
Thanks for posting this. Very clear commentary and a clear view of what you're doing. I've been worried about how I was going to get this done for my Ford pickup but I feel like I know what to expect now. 👍👍
Glad to hear it! Thank you for watching!
Amazing video! Thank you for making it
Thank you I appreciate it!
Great video! Good job! Helped me tackle my Jeep Commando’s 3-speed T15 (which I could not find a RUclips video on). Those snap rings are a bastard trying to put back on even with a good pair of USA-made SK snap ring pliers I bought specifically for this project.
Glad to hear it! Yeah it’s a job but sooner or later you win the fight!
I appreciate this video man, I'm picking up a T19 tomorrow to swap into my 81 bronco. My C6 shat the bed 😅
Glad to hear it!
Great video. Thanx for taking the time, very helpful.
Glad to hear it! Thank you for watching!
Nice thorough video
Thank you!
Awesome thank you for making this!!!!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks.
Helped me with my T19 rebuild
Glad to hear it!
Good instructional and easy to follow.
Thank you!
air hammers are are good tool for driving shafts out with ease. They can be very damaging if you are not careful though.
Good idea!
Thanks a bunch, well made video with lots of useful advice
Thank you!
good job your videos bare always enjoyable thank you
Thank you!
Great video 👍 keep up the good work!
I appreciate it!
Awesome video! Thank you for sharing. I like the pace of your videos. Why did you replace the 3rd-4th synchronizer assembly and not just the synchro rings and slider keys? Thanks!
Thank you I appreciate it! Because I changed input shafts I had to change that whole hub because the big and small cone synchronizers don’t interchange between hubs. I’m adapting this to a Willys Jeep just I deviated a little from stock.
That bearing 3" seperator don't fit exactly right on the bearing--is too small, but appears to work. It will scar the bearing, but I suppose it's getting replaced so no big deal. 6" would be better, then just put bolts to pull away from the transmission (no need for the fork, etc).
I agree wasn’t really the right tool for the job but it worked, thank you!
Awesome video man
Thank you!
Excellent video
Thank you!
Not sure if its applicable here but i think the dark coloration of the brass (copper and zinc) or bronze (copper and tin) synchronizers is caused by the slightly corrosive higher sulphur content api gl4 and especially gl5 multi-viscosity gear lubricants… it’s the extreme pressure additives in em what have the sulphur. i’ve heard tales of that ‘dark coloration’ being a thin layer of copper sulfide or ‘metal soap’ being eaten away with every shift and wearing synchros out. some folks say the copper sulfide in crystalline form is abrasive and will wear out metal components. Could be wrong tho… maybe it’s just cause its forty or fifty years old!
Can’t argue with that!
Well done!
Thank you!
Terrific video. Thank you for sharing your talent and time. Do you ever show going thru the shifter?
Glad to hear it thank you! No but that would be a good idea for a future video.
Nice job!
Thank you!
Currently rebuilding my t19 really appreciate the video do you know if there's any updated synchronizers?
Glad to hear it! Not that I know of sorry
I echo all the other comments here...fantastic video. Great cadence, camera work, and explaining things. I just installed the shifter back into a T18 in a 70 F250. I'm restoring it for my uncle, I've never driven the truck.
The shifter has a pretty long throw up to first, but going into second is a shorter throw. Then a very short throw to go up into third and down into fourth, and then a longer throw to go up into Reverse.
It feels like it almost barely has to move to go up into third and then down into 4th. Just wondering if this is normal.
Second question, there is a lot of side to side play on the shifter in any gear. Not like how you can move it completely side to side like it is in neutral though. Is that normal for this transmission too?
Really appreciate it! Sounds like something in the shift tower or shift lever could be worn out. I’ve rebuilt other transmission towers it’s not too bad of a job. Sorry I don’t have more input!
I’ve got a T19 and the shift tower will not shift. Not sure if something came loose during disassembly. Any ideas?
I had one do the same thing. Work the shift rails around with a screw driver it can get in a position where it’s bound up. Hope this helps!
I’m rebuilding a t19 basically doing the same thing you are in the video…. I took my shaft out first and second gears all came off but when I get to the third gear it has a c clip ring inside the 3rd gear and stops it from expanding also my transmissions reverse gear I don’t know if I can pull it off backwards safely? And ideas?
Well done video! What's the stuff you put on the bolt that holds the counter shaft retaining plate? Thread sealer or some weak thread lock?
Yeah it was some cheap thread locker from autozone. I appreciate it!
Excellent job. Are the needle bearings new or did you use the old ones?
Thank you! I replaced all the needle bearings as well.
Don’t use gear oil it can degrade non ferrous metal use royal purple it won’t interact with the non ferrous internal parts
Good advice thanks!
the purple power liquid soak, won't it cause rust , especially on the inside of the case? also how do you dispose of the used purple liquid ?
thanks
As far as rusting I wipe down the gasket surfaces with grease after it’s clean and the inside a little PB blaster or wd40 to keep it from flash rusting until I fill it with oil. I use the purple power to the point it’s more oil than degreaser and just take it to the recycling center, they’ve never complained haha
Is the t18 the same as the tremec t170 I’m waiting for my kit to come in tomorrow and I’ve been looking all week for a legit video I can study before I start the job and I’ll be doing it solo and this weekend
I’m not sure what similarities they have if I remember right the t170 has an overdrive? If so I’d say they are pretty different. Sorry I can’t help more!
What years where these T18 transmissions used? I'm wondering if this transmission can be used on a Ford flathead?
I think ford used these from the 60’s until around 1990!
I'm sure this has been answered.. I have a t18 and I'm curious as how to identify a granny low 6:32.1. it was out of a 85 f250. Side of transmission has 13-01-065-907
Novak has a really good article on these T18’s. The safest way to make sure it’s the wide ratio is to rotate the output shaft and count the input shaft rotations in first gear. Hope this helps!
Will a t19 input shaft fit into t18? I have both trans and want to swap them due to the t18 tail shaft snapping and can’t find a main shaft
Unfortunately I don’t think they are interchangeable. Keep an eye on eBay sometimes they pop up!

Thank you for great videos, would you be willing to share those instructions?
Thank you for watching! What do you need?
@@SevenBarSalvage I need nothing, why are you asking that?
Awesome vid...where did u get the nice printed exploded view diagrams. Doing a T19...Also, would be nice to know tolerances and torques,...so hard to find any info.
I think T-19 has the same guts..I have the T19. Am I correct?
They are pretty similar. The T19 has a synchronized first gear so there’s a few little differences. Thanks!
You wouldn't have a spicer passenger side shaft for a 51 cj3a. It's a dana 25. Ten spline 21and 9/16 long.
I’m afraid not at the moment. QTM parts in Georgia should have some good used ones!
@@SevenBarSalvage ok thank you thought I would try jeepster man say maybe next year.
Any idea if a t-19 is a simaler process
Pretty much the same thing. I think it’s got an extra synchro
Yes only difference is first gear is synchronized
Amigo saludos a que velocidad maxima se puede alcansar con una tramicion de estas de 4 velocidades sin carga
That’s a good question I’m not sure I’ve never done the math!
Hey, I'm considering a 420 for my sbc Cj7.. what do you think of it off road so far? What kind of jeep?
This is going in a CJ3B. I’ve not got it on the trail yet but I’ll be posting videos when I do!
How to get the lid off? I got the 6 bolts out, what else to do?
It helps to keep it in neutral. You’ve got to get that reverse fork just right it really likes to hang up.
Yes there’s not. Thanks
Glad I could help!
What oil did you use?
I’ve not filled it up yet but probably like a 80w-90!
28:45 I'm stuck right here and can't get it past the reverse arm. It looked like you struggled here too, then cut the camera, and it's in. What did you do to get it there?
That gear was hanging on the case it was a combination of rocking it and beating on it with the dead blow and it finally slipped in. You might could clean up the casting a little and it slip in better? Hope this helps!
@SevenBarSalvage I ended up stepping away from it, took a lunch, came back, and basically looked at it and it slid right in. No idea how or why, but I'll take it! Thanks for the quick reply!
