  • A 17-inch Happy Leaf Procyon 2.0 LED light fixture provided the lighting for a portable seedling bench. Lettuce and pakchoi seedlings grew equally well for about the first 2 weeks from this seedling bench and from a pole lamp with a residential LED bulb. However, as time progressed to 25 days after planting, the seedlings under the pole lamp became more etiolated and weak, whereas those on the seedling bench with the Procyon light grew well. It was suggested that the Procyon light was designed for plant growing and had a more favorable spectral wavelength than the residential LED bulb.

Excellent! I grow exclusively with Happy Leaf LEDs, I bought my first one in December 2017 and have acquired many more since then. This is a helpful side-by-side comparison. My first plant ever grown was with a 6000K 10-watt LED in a flexible neck desklamp, my grow container was a plastic Maxwell House coffee container... we all have to start somewhere, right? I've come to appreciate the value of quality lighting, in both growth performance and in lower energy bills. Big thumbs up for you, kind sir. As always, it is good to see you.

Hope you love the Northwest, I'm from there. Moved to the Ozarks last year, love it as much as I did the NW.

The residentual led bulb you showed has the same type of leds hidden under the plastic cover. It helps dispers the light on a house. However we want all the light going down so i just pop off the cover and get a much higher percentage of the light focused into the plants.

I am trying to make a system where there is zero cost, i use woodchips (dark 1 year decomposed) sifted finely for seed germination, in recycled small plastic cups (slightly bigger than net cups) the bottom is cut with sissors 3 times to create 3 narrow eliptical holes for roots, i use compost tea and urine for nutrient as well, natural light in a greenhouse uses less water but can be outside too. I use recycled plastic containers for the water storage but i have failed the plants as the containers arent uniform and it is difficult to gauge how much water to add manually as each plant uses different amounts, i have harmed plants by adding too much nutrient or too much/ too little water, next i will think about automation and ease of maintenance and watering using gravity only.
one of my cherry tomato plants grew so big it half filled my 7x10x20 hoophouse in just a 2 gallon container. Plenty of sweet tomatoes too. Thank you for sharing your ideas i have used on my $zero budget journey.
