Thing about Broken Age, and Kickstarter-funded games in general, is that funding a game on Kickstarter is a sign of trust from the consumer. The games that get funded are the ones that show the most promise of being a worthwhile project, and for figures like Tim Schafer, who has always made brilliant games but has been constantly frustrated by lack of commercial success, knowing there's advanced interest in the game frees them up creatively. It's the same with figures like Doug TenNapel (Armikrog), Matt Bozon (Shantae: Half-Genie Hero), Keiji Inafune (Mighty No. 9) and Rand Miller (Obduction). All these people are creative wunderkinds that have either been burned by commercial failure, corporate malice, or nostalgic stagnation, and Kickstarter has allowed them to go around all of this and appeal directly to the players who are most interested in these games, and at least being granted assurance that they can be made, and that an interest will be generated. This stands in stark contrast to the more anti-consumer practices of huge consoles like the Xbox One, where their projects very much aren't sponsored by prior consumer interest. Instead, huge corporations throw gobs and gobs of money at bland fare like Ryse: Son of Rome and so on, developed in such a way to appeal aggressively to their audience AFTER it's finished and badger them to buy it in droves. And yet, somehow they come off like they're doing the consumer a FAVOUR by letting us play it, and all the DRM and restrictions on their console tells them that it's a favour we damn well need to learn to appreciate. There's no trust or understanding between the consumer and the developer; the developer makes the game, and then aggresses the consumer to buy it, and now thanks to DRM, DLC and the like, they're more aggressive about it than ever.
