Sonic Advance 3 is one of the most underrated games in the franchise. I wish the partner mechanic came back because it has so much potential with the amount of Sonic characters we have. I also think the hub world is actually really neat since it allows every playthrough to be different since you can choose which order you can beat the 3 acts of each world.
I think the partner stuff is probably the ideal way 2D Sonic should work, especially 2 player. They should bring it back in a game with perhaps more forgiving level design imo.
Maybe people didn't like how the partner mechanic was like in Sonic Heroes and thought Sonic Advance 3 was just a 2D version of Sonic Heroes, since it only came out about a year later. I enjoyed Sonic Heroes as a kid (don't know why anymore), but the partner mechanic in Advance 3 was much better handled, and the ROM Hack (for the first 3 Genesis/Mega Drive games) Sonic Classic Heroes proves that the mechanic seems to work better in 2D Sonic games in general.
@@JeffreyThrash I never saw someone complain about how the partner system works in Heroes, you can do so many great combos by switching characters and the character you switch to teleport where you are so I don't see why people would complain about it
@@generaljf7233 It’s still one of the better gimmicks in 3D Sonic games, it’s just that Sonic Heroes was a very rushed release that really could have used more polish to turn what is one of the most divisive Sonic games ever into one that is at least good. But you’re right, I think it’s actually the combat, the cutesy, corny dialogue, and the floaty controls that people don’t like about Sonic Heroes, not the team mechanic that did what it set out to do. When I was 9, I thought Sonic Heroes was the greatest game in existence and still revisit it from time to time, so I don’t understand how people could outright despise Heroes to the point where it actually makes them angry, in general.
In the case you decide to get all the chaos emerald before the final boss, it will show you the normal ending and you have to do it again to get the true final boss and the true ending, man, this game really has a obsession with wanting you to unlock things in a specific method or order.

Goomba on the off chance you do see this, it has been great to have your videos over the developing years of my life, you helped me through some really rough times. It’s been 3,000 years… 😭😭 I am so glad you enjoyed the game! It was one of my absolute favorites as a kid, but there’s so many negative reviews for it. It’s like people completely ignore all the good Advance 3 has and don’t give it a chance.
After 100%ing this game last summer I came to appreciate it a lot more. I liked the final boss and the true ending which gives closure to the plot of Sonic Battle
Tails and Knuckles teaming up for the exploration segments makes perfect sense! Tails is smart and intuitive and Knuckles has a sixth sense and mystical sense for finding treasures and things tied to Chaos.
Sonic Advance 3 is definitely the best one yet by its idea of creating duos with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Cream. It’s amazing because using different characters changes their abilities which changes the gameplay of the game. There are some points where the game gives you the middle finger with enemies being everywhere and annoying you, even the bosses are ridiculous because even they are sometimes annoying but at least it ain’t the running crap in Sonic Advance 2.
This game is an interesting step for the Advance series, but it almost feels like the levels were designed to annoy the player, especially on the first playthrough. I would have liked to see an Advance 4 just to see how the formula would evolve further
I agree with everything you said about this game. Aside from all the cheap instant kill tricks, it’s a very well put together threequel to end off the Advance series that combines all of the mechanics of the last three games together perfectly. Yet another great video, Goomba! Nice work! 😊👍
This video series has convinced me to pick up and try the Advance Series again sometime. My memories are only years ago from the early 2000s, so I should definitely give it a modern shot.
The only downside of these reviews is they don't emphasize enough how beautiful and expressive the character sprites were in all 3 games. Yes, I know graphics and visuals aren't everything, but in this case I really do think the personality added to each character's movements add to the game. SEGA tried to bring back Sonic's expressiveness in Sonic Frontiers a bit, but it wasn't enough and Sonic, like most company mascots, seems to have lost a lot of his animated personality and even ability to make interesting facial expressions in recent 3D games, most notably in Sonic Forces. Not to mention how, at the time, those sprites would show up everywhere in Newgrounds and early RUclips animations, most notably in Super Mario Bros Z. That only ensured that I would get even more nostalgic for that particular art style over time.
@@JeffreyThrashI couldn’t agree more ! Years later playing it again on my iPad using an emulator, I can only appreciate so much how great the sprite animations were
I really liked this game. I'm glad a third video was made for it, and I hope your channel gets more attention eventually! You put more effort into your videos than most big RUclipsrs do, and I really respect it
1:58 “I know people don’t like this level, but nah, you just suck” is probably the funniest thing I’ve heard all day LMAOOO also MAN I loved this game as a kid. Cream and knuckles was always my favorite combo. One thing I love about this game is the true ending. It kinda feels like that sonic and tails cutscene in sonic 2, but for the advance games. And the credits music always hits so hard for me. Great video all around!
gemeryl actually does use emeryls stuff btw, if you look it up you’re right about that, that’s why the whole thing where you fight it with eggman feels kinda like a poetic ending to the character since both of you were trying to fight over emeryl before, think of the way its presented as similar storytelling the s3 & k
Good stuff! I never played the Sonic Advance series, but I did get Sonic Rush for the DS. Now I do hope you plan on reviewing that one, so I can get your opinion on how it holds up compared to the older games!
Brilliant video, Goomba. I completely agree with everything you said. I feel 3 is the best of the Sonic Advance series because like you said, it has the level design of 1 with the speed of 2. And as complicated as it is, getting the Emeralds is better here than 2 because at least there’s SOME form of progression. You didn’t need to get all the rings EVERY TIME. Also, you know you can get multiple keys, right? You aren’t tied to just one key. You can collect multiple keys for multiple tries. Anyway, I’m glad to see we see the game the same way. Brilliant assessment of the game and the series as a whole. Keep staying awesome, Goomba. Hopefully you’ll get out of those two pipes someday.
For some reason everyone I talk to seems to hate this game with a major passion like if it killed their dog. I actually really love this game because its fun and I like the team up mechanic. I remember my favorite combo was Tails and Amy because it actually boosts Tails' flying abilities on top of giving him a hammer to attack in the air. Sonic and Cream gives Sonic a little inner tube when he touches the water which is pretty cute. But yeah its legit pretty good though I'd have to replay them sometime.
THANK YOU for covering the sonic gba games, and even including sonic battle in it, I love these games and they are so underrated, I remember people complaining about having no 2d titles while these games and sonic rush had came out and NOBODY was playing them, also some of the story elements like emeryl are pretty hype and the secret bosses are awesome and I LOVE the character mechanics of 3, super cool games glad you showed them off
So about the Egghammer; this actually continues from Sonic Pocket Adventure, the first Sonic game made by Dimps. It really does appear in some form in every Dimps 2D Sonic game.

For me what I loved about Sonic over Mario when I was younger was being able to play as different characters in a story game (not just like in Party or Racing). Sigh~
Great video! I’ve got a recommendation for you to investigate. I really enjoy your videos making fun of old bad GameBoy games with a bit of a twist. Not sure if you have heard about Noddy as apparently there’s actually 3 Nintendo games from GBC then GBA and the DS. The first one is called Noddy and the birthday party on the GBC I’m pretty sure you’ll have a good go at this one. The second one is for the GBA is called Noddy: A day in toyland. I think this one gets a bit meh. Last one is for the DS as let me tell ya it’s absolutely rubbish it’s called Noddy in toyland. Oh just to let you know about the GBC one it’s based on the classic 90’s stop motion tv series exclusively for the Children’s BBC back in the day as the title of screen plays the opening of the into song from Noddy’s Toyland Adventures. The GBA one is based into the early 2000’s as the intro song is opening theme song called Make Way For Noddy as it’s in CGI after the 1900’s stop motion series ended. So I gave you a bit of a history if you have never even knew Noddy had 3 Nintendo games as I’m pretty sure you’ll have a good go with the first as I’m pretty you’ll make fun of it.
I'm shocked and really happy sonic advance 3 was his favorite out of the advance series, from characters combination being completely useless to others, cheap deaths and lack of ending but despite all of that this was my childhood and my first game i ever played
Sonic Advance 3 was the first one I played thanks to the decent reviews from magazines at the time. Yeah i thought it was pretty good. It was also one of the last games where you hear Deem Bristow as Eggman before he passed away and the Voice cast was replaced by the 4kids Sonic X cast.
Non aggression zone doesn't sound good, but I get it. 2 countries that (have been at) each other's throats usually have a little bit of land between their borders called a non-agression zone. Since Sonk and egger team up for the greater good they thought about it and that's pretty neat. Still though, they could have gone with ceasefire zone or something.
I liked Frontiers. There’s not a whole lot to say really. I wish the open zones were a bit more interesting design wise and visually but I think as long as they build upon this premise they could bake something really special. The bosses were insanely hype tho
Interesting. I also liked the game. Although Chaos Island did nearly consider making me ragequit the game. But I decided not to cuz I’d never be able to get over the fact that I spent $60 on it only to give up on it halfway through if I did. Also, seeing as Origins came out last year, what’s your favorite game included in the collection?
So the plot of Advance 3 is all in the GBA manual back when games still did that: Eggman used the Chaos Emeralds and broke the dimensions of the world, splitting it in to the 7 Zones you go through during the game that are held together by the 7 Chaos Emeralds. When you beat the final boss, the Master Emerald puts the dimensions back together again. As for Sonic and Gemerl transforming, they pulled the same gimmick with Perfect Chaos in Sonic Adventure 1: Gemerl used the Negative Energy of the Emeralds, and Sonic used the Positive Energy. Fun Fact: The Nonaggression Zone is named after a Nonaggression Pact, where two enemies work together for a common goal. Also, the names of the Secret Final Areas before this were "X Zone" and "XX Zone". As weird as Nonaggression Zone sounds, I think they were right to not go for "XXX Zone". Finally, as to why Gemerl exists, this game takes place after Sonic Battle and Eggman basically built his own copy of Emerl. In the true ending, Tails reprograms Gemerl to have free will, and he just chills with Cream. This is even referenced in the IDW comics series as Gemerl is basically Cream's bodyguard.
First a Lowart video archie sonic comic video and now Lonely Goomba video on a gba sonic game. Truly I'm blessed to see my era of sonic get some coverage.
Sonic Advance 3, Mega Man Battle Network 6--great conclusions to the glorious GBA eras for both of these franchises! Both felt like fantastic "bookend" games to me!
I actually made a Boss Theme for GEMERL because of how much I love his boss evolution throughout the game. Sometimes 2:51 It fits the Cyber Track Act 3 boss so well surprisingly.
fun fact: Gemeral actually does come back in the IDW Sonic comics! and yea, he's still all about protecting Cream The Rabbit and being a good robot boi.
Your ranking of the Sonic Advance games is the exact opposite of mine… with, of course, the exception of Sonic Pinball Party AKA “The Shawshank Redemption” of video games. Gonna name my first born after that masterpiece.
Advance 3 is not only my favorite game in the Advance series, but easily one of my favorite Sonic games ever. Sure it's not perfect, but I just really can't help loving it. That said, if we ever got a re-release for modern platforms, there's some changes I think they should make to improve the experience: 1. Zoom the camera out a little bit, and implement widescreen. This would help a ton in regards to both bottomless pits and getting crushed. They couldn't do anything like this on the GBA due to the pixel resolution of the screen, basically just a hardware limitation. That shouldn't be an issue anymore these days though, assuming they port or remake the game instead of simply emulating it. 2. Improve the physics and partner AI a bit. The motion often feels a bit stiff and the partners feel too independent from the player. Acceleration from a standstill is too slow, and there's sometimes not enough control while jumping, I'd recommend making the physics feel more similar to Sonic 3 or Mania, and likewise the partner characters should be more similar to Tails in the classic games where he was able to follow behind the player more faithfully and generally didn't get ahead. This would help a lot with preventing the AI from triggering stage objects that the player needs to progress, thus preventing some cheap deaths. It would also generally improve the "feel" of the game being more team focused instead of mostly just feeling like you are a single character with a partner next to you sometimes. 3. Untie the collectable Chao from the system of collecting Chaos Emeralds, and instead have them unlock concept art or cosmetics for the characters or something. Basically, they function like the Red Star Rings from later games. 4. Make it so the keys simply spawn by default regardless of how many Chao you have collected, but you do have to go a little bit out of your way looking for them if you want to find them as opposed to them being along the main path. Additionally, reward a key for finishing a stage with at least 50 rings. This would potentially allow you to score two keys in one playthrough of a stage, making farming for retry attempts less tedious. When you still have more keys, there should be a retry prompt when you fail instead of returning you back to the hub as well. 5. Make it so that you can unlock the characters regardless of which character you are playing as, and simply just use Sonic in the cutscene. 6. Put in a tangible reward for beating Nonaggression. Ideally, the ability to play as Super Sonic. Just this inclusion itself regardless of implementation would be incredible, but personally the way I would handle this is Super Sonic gets unlocked as a separate character in the character select and is the only character that can't be paired with anyone else. You play as regular Sonic with a moveset reminiscent of Advance 2 until you collect 50 rings, and then you can transform. Your double jump ability becomes Mania Egg Reverie style flight as long as you are transformed, and you can even break the Knuckles exclusive barriers. Press jump while flying to cancel the flight, press it again while falling to resume flight, and press the attack button while flying to do a dash attack in the d-pad direction you are holding. You are invincible while transformed, but lose 1 ring per second and if you lose all of your rings your transformation ends. Also, entering into a special stage while Super Sonic is selected as your player character defaults to Tails in the Tornado with you while you play as regular Sonic. 7. Here's the big one: Local and online multiplayer support. For local co-op, you can play in horizontal splitscreen, and online both players get their own screen. This applies to the multiplayer races and minigames as well.
I was pretty harsh on Advance 3 back in the day, but this video is gonna make me give it a second chance whenever I have the opportunity to play it again. I really do wish Sega would try another 2D Sonic like this, as good as Sonic Mania was.

This is my favorite of the 3 Advance games too, I don't have the patience to try to find all the Chao in the levels and I never understood the controls to do special moves but it was still a fun time, I didn't finish it but I enjoyed what I played.
It’s been nice seeing goomba going back to gba, especially continuing with the gba sonic games. Definitely been a great quadrilogy Though now I wonder if he’ll take on the rush games, as they are slightly connected (By that I mean that sonic advance sprites are used in the credits of rush 1, along with a unique blaze Sprite in the style of the advance games)
This and Sonic Battle were the 2 Sonic GBA games I had. Both have special places with me. I played this game a lot when I was younger. While I do admit getting the emeralds is a pain. I don't get why some people dislike this game. Too this day, its still one of my favorite games in the entire franchise. I honestly would love too see this whole trilogy and Sonic Battle ported too NSO or even have a full on remake with online multiplayer. I think all the GBA Sonic games should get something like that.

21:03 don’t even fret goomba, it was an amazing video as always
It feels kinda weird that this was one of the first channels I saw on RUclips and it’s one of the only ones I still watch new uploads of.
Great video as always Goomba! Glad you could finish the Sonic GBA quartet; I really enjoy your deep-dive, level-by-level approach to game reviews =D
I know your videos take a ton of effort, but it's totally worth it. You are such a grossly underrated youtuber.
3 fantastic videos in a row! You’ve been doing well! Keep it up!
Also, if you don’t mind, what are your thoughts on Sonic Frontiers?
I liked Frontiers. There’s not a whole lot to say really. I wish the open zones were a bit more interesting design wise and visually but I think as long as they build upon this premise they could bake something really special. The bosses were insanely hype tho
Interesting. I also liked the game. Although Chaos Island did nearly consider making me ragequit the game. But I decided not to cuz I’d never be able to get over the fact that I spent $60 on it only to give up on it halfway through if I did.
Also, seeing as Origins came out last year, what’s your favorite game included in the collection?
So the plot of Advance 3 is all in the GBA manual back when games still did that:
Eggman used the Chaos Emeralds and broke the dimensions of the world, splitting it in to the 7 Zones you go through during the game that are held together by the 7 Chaos Emeralds.
I hear this 100%
Sonic Advance 3, Mega Man Battle Network 6--great conclusions to the glorious GBA eras for both of these franchises! Both felt like fantastic "bookend" games to me!
Yeah BN6 was great. 4 and 5 were a bit wonky for me but I still enjoy them. But 6 smashed it out the park and is probably the best in the series
I was just wondering about where this was, thank you!
I actually made a Boss Theme for GEMERL because of how much I love his boss evolution throughout the game. Sometimes 2:51 It fits the Cyber Track Act 3 boss so well surprisingly.
Great video as always, Goomba! Longtime fan here!
fun fact: Gemeral actually does come back in the IDW Sonic comics!
and yea, he's still all about protecting Cream The Rabbit and being a good robot boi.
Just in time to enjoy another video from this talking mushroom.
5:36 C'mon dude is that seriously the best pic of tails sitting you could get? Jesus fucking Christ
Whoo I’ll do all I can for this channel it’s one of my favorites thank. You so much goomba
Your ranking of the Sonic Advance games is the exact opposite of mine… with, of course, the exception of Sonic Pinball Party AKA “The Shawshank Redemption” of video games. Gonna name my first born after that masterpiece.
8:50 Sadly, Game Theories will no longer be a thing soon. Unless there's a replacement for MP
Advance 3 is not only my favorite game in the Advance series, but easily one of my favorite Sonic games ever. Sure it's not perfect, but I just really can't help loving it. That said, if we ever got a re-release for modern platforms, there's some changes I think they should make to improve the experience:
I finally joined your patreon, best decision I made all month! I love your videos so much
Im proud to see how long you’ve come you lonely goomba you.
I guess the waiting paid off!
Great Video!
First time i'm blessed by a new upload not even an hour in, let's gooo!!! Been waiting for this one!!
Finally, the BEST Advance title.
I was pretty harsh on Advance 3 back in the day, but this video is gonna make me give it a second chance whenever I have the opportunity to play it again.
I really do wish Sega would try another 2D Sonic like this, as good as Sonic Mania was.
That panda head tho... It's up to something!
Thank you for always making me laugh my ass off
Thanks a ton. I’m honoured
@@TheLonelyGoomba why every time you have a man’s body with a goonba’s head on it?
@@mariotapawan5521 might need to elaborate a bit on what you're asking?
If you're asking why I tend to use a man's body when editing a Goomba head on it, it's cos long hair tends to make the edit look bad so it's easier to use people with short hair.
I love the combo Cream + Knuckles
17:43 AHA! lonely goomba lore! thats the lonely goomba's not so lonely twin brother
Glad to see you got round to trying this game, and I agree, 3 is the best of the Advance games.
I LOVED this game as a kid. I played it ALL THE TIME. Even today i find the quality and replay ability of this game QUITE high. It held up so well.
Multiplayer for these games was always a hoot.
7:13 I spat out my water hearing that 😂
This game is poetic in away because it was the last game to feature the Dreamcast voice actors and it was the last game released before the series imploded in on itself
Just commenting for the algorithm.
Still, nice to see you giving positive reviews when they're earned. The original style only worked when the Goomba was waging war on the cruel plumber.
We all know what that Ham Fist is being used for Goomba 👀
01:03 I always assumed you were a Yorkshire man TLG!
i love how content the goomba is with being only able to play games for the rest of his life
My boyfriend always says I'm watching the talking poo again when I'm watching this channel. And he knows because this channel is great and I watch it a lot.
Definitely been a great quadrilogy
Though now I wonder if he’ll take on the rush games, as they are slightly connected
(By that I mean that sonic advance sprites are used in the credits of rush 1, along with a unique blaze Sprite in the style of the advance games)
"Route 99! The Evil version of Route 66"
You mean Route 666?
Great video Goomba! One question, do you play your games on the NTSC or PAL style?
when the lonely goomba releases a video you know its a good day, brilliant video as always mr goomba!
This was my first sonic game this video makes me so happy
I agree with your opinion, of all 3 Sonic Advance, my favorites are 1 and 3. 2 I wasn't really feeling it overall. Thanks for your very cool GBA videos!
Now you're obligated to review Pinball Party.
I’m thinking about doing a video where I play every pinball game on the gameboy so it might just be included in that
Oh,i really like Advance 3 and its good that find someone that likes his special stage
