I was the only one in my family to cry when we saw this show the first time, I still don't understand how. The way this song was written is genius; a lot of the rest of the soundtrack rhymed, but this one was just words without the clarity of normal thought. Abuela Claudia's death took the clarity out of Usnavi's life. Also the way that Sonny was portrayed throughout this; for the rest of the show before this song he was always bubbly and talkative, but when Abuela died he just sat, silent, with an expression of utter despair and confusion. That seriously broke me, they way Usnavi expressed his grief through words but Sonny, the chatterbox, said nothing. His silence said more than any words he could've spoken in that moment.
That moment Lin and Mandy turn toward each other... You really see the love and adoration Hearing Alabanza it sounds like a tribute to the matriarch where Usnavi finally finds the strength to join. I saw a snippet from the candlelight vigil in the movie and thought it was a separate scene. Nope. When you see it performed here you can see this beautiful blend of tribute, a community grieving, and that community coming together to express both love to their matriarch and support to a friend in pain. Same in the movie; they're all marching *to* Usnavi. They're there to embrace him and give him the strength to sing that last "alabanza" 😭😭😭
He does a very good job, but... ...there is a softness, a quietness in the original recording which, for me, sets the mood better. -Then again, perhaps it’s just that the way one hears something FIRST will usually tend to feel like the way the song “should” be done...
Yes! Exactly! Lin is amazing actor! I know this, we know this, from In The Heights! But... his acting in the Hamilton proshot-.. is not his best work..
My grandma passed away last year(we’re Puerto Rican and Mexican) and this song and Abuela reminds me Sm of her :( this song and musical mean the world to me
Honestly, this is one of the very first 'in the heights' clips i have seen and im in absolute tears. I dont know the story, who this is sung about or anything but its so incredibly moving. Hats off to LMM for wrinting a song that can produce this type of reaction
I just saw the film- have not seen this yet on stage. Abuela Claudia was basically the whole neighborhood's grandmother. That’s who they’re singing about.
I'm not crying, you're crying. THIS GETS TO ME EVERY SINGLE TIME but, I love it. To see Lin show and feel such emotion just shows how amazing he is. Is there anybody more amazing than him? No, there isn't.
watching this agan 6 years later! this part always breaks my heart in bootlegs, especially when the audience gasps when he says "abuela claudia passed away"
I've being crying by the cybershop I'm watching this at... Started with Paciencia y Fe, then with all the power in Carnaval del Barrio... and now this... Yo! Imma big fat weepy... pero a la chingada! Amo In The Heights!!!
@@jorgeguzmanm99 i played benny in my hs production and i'm a female, and I can't speak for all productions but the only hassle we had was changing up some pronouns and a few lines to make sense because our nina was also a female lmao
That's okay! I think this is more personal to Lin and potentially to the audience too (bc it's set closer to today), so no :D I actually like this more than Ham too!
Me clicking on this knowing full well I will be sad: It'll be fine Me watching Atencion knowing full well I will be sad: It's fine, I mean it's a sad moment in the play but she's literally sitting right there, it's fine. Me as Lin stands up during the intro to Alabanza, knowing full well I will be sad: It's fine, totally fine, all is fine Me when Lin says "and she was just here! ......she was just here": IT'S NOT FINE!!😭😭😭😭😭
Harmonically speaking the I7 (D) leads as a secondary dominant to the IV (G), I believe. So the C instead of C# makes it a dominant chord instead of Imaj7. Was odd to me first too, because its a leading tone that doesn't get resolved in the voicing. Now I love it and I think it provides a unique color to the simple tune. It's practically just a turnaround.
darren motise I think it's incredibly deliberate. It's an unfinished progression. It leaves you wanting more. Feeling unsatisfied. Slightly offset. Exactly the emotions felt after Abuela Claudias death. Unfinished. Discordant. Imperfect. It's so perfectly partnered with the emotion I can't imagine it ending any other way.
Study up. It's intentionally written to sound minor and discordant. It's purposefully writing the emotions into the music. Wonderfully done. It's meant to convey the loss. Sadness. And wrongness of her death. Seriously beautifully executed.
In my mind Usnavi and Nina are practically brother and sister.
Angie Wagner yes samr
same
In this final version? Yeah. Or like cousins, but yeah.
He says as much (in thee film at least?) That Nina is like a sister to him.
Yep! I love that they addressed that in the movie, that Usnavi and Nina see each other as brother and sister!

"She was just here!" gets me EVERY DANG TIME
same. and the glass coke bottles
You can hear it in his voice,
It's just odd, because she's literally still sitting right there lol
The fact that she is sitting right there makes me giggle.
cloaked in shadow, like a woman biding her time
Man, Mandy kills it in this song especially when she hits that sky high "Pacienca Y Fey" there toward the end. Just amazing.
When Lin tears up for this song, do you think he's remembering the woman in his life who inspired Abuela?
Otis Murdoch sadly, the real life inspiration died a few days ago on christmas day . 💔
Really? Oh, no, thats so sad!
Probably
Thanks for the depression
@@laketown5802 no it was his grandfather who died 2 weeks before opening night off broadway he explains it in the book he wrote for the film
I try to avoid this song when listening to ITH, because I legit cry everytime.
mood: the faint sobs in the background
mood: Lin crying cause it makes me cry that he cries
lmao I didn't even notice because of my own sobbing
mood: gasps in the back of "SHE WAS JUST HERE"
First time I listened all the way through this musical, when Kevin says "passed away" my stomach knotted immediately and I had to sit down
Lauren Pullan in the bootleg there are gasps from the crowd and it makes everything so much more painful
When I die, I hope I get something this nice sung at my funeral

3:32 always gives me chills, it's hard to hear in this recording but Nina's note right there is *pure gold*
"Abuela passed away at noon today" as Abuela is visible in the background has me messed up.
Usnavi and Nina are like siblings and I want to cry
Jesus. I'm playing Kevin Rosario in my school show and hearing the "She was just here" line gets me every time.
The guy who filled in for Kevin's (Carlos Gomez I think) voice is like ridiculously beautiful. Its ridiculous

Ugh, the "she was just here" part always gets to me, excellent performance.
as someone who is currently playing usnavi It is very hard to live up to lin-manuel's performance
same here man
really? not true. there's a high school kid here in NY who is doing a terrific job, making it his own. I even prefer it over LMM.
+darren motise he said it was hard not impossible
Better to aim to find a way to make it your own, than to try and copy what someone else like LMM did, I think.
Lin is such a good actor. He really gets the audience on his side.
"It might be nice... It might be niiice..." 🎶
(wait- wrong play)

Mr. Miranda's baggy eyes give him a very natural mournful expression. (Note: that's not meant to be an insult)
The look of sadness for his friend that Chris is looking at Lin with is so sad

I play 'hundreds of stories' then this song to make me cry. Cause life.

Such a powerful song..and even as a reunion concert, without the sets and costumes-- still hits home. Such a gift.

No... but, Stephen Sondheim comes fairly close in some ways. I would love to see what they could do collaborating together.
His tone is AMAZING.
If Alabanza doesn’t do something to you, make you cry, or at least tear up…what will?
Thanks Lin, for making me cry.... I definitely needed it, you can tell how sad everyone is😭😭😭🥺❤️💔

Lin don't cry little cinnamon roll :((
If you cry I *_cry_*
I get to work with Robert Ramirez who plays Sonny in the tour of ith and right now we're doing a production of ith at my school!

That last B, instead of the expected C, is odd. Makes no sense to me musically. It always just sounds like the singer is flat. Very creepy.
