Sounds awesome! I particularly love the choice for Complications to give a bonus to the main roll. "You succeeded *but*" is usually going to be more interesting than "You failed *and*". Can't wait to see more of the game!
More Stormlight TTRPG info please! Mechanics, classes, enemies, lore… anything! I can’t wait!
Loving all I hear! Plot items are great. The ONE RING TTRPG had some great plot and story mechanics
Interesting mechanic - similar to Advantage and Threat from Star Wars RPG, but I really like that the Complication adds a bonus to your initial roll. Lends itself well to "no, but"/"yes, and" storytelling.
That's what I was thinking when he was explaining it too. Honestly, the Star Wars TTRPG's focus on narrative would be a good staring point for the Stormlight system. I'm interested in seeing more game mechanics.
@@stevenmathews9355Genesys (the generic version of the starwars rpg) is what i am using for my Stormlight game that ive been running. It works great.
Love to see details around the RPG. Excited to get my minis on the tabletop and rolling these dice!
Honestly is is exactly the sort of thing that should be in story based games. I have pondered versions of this for homebrewing into 5e, this the cleanest implementation that I have seen so far. The first time I heard about this plot complication die was in relation to an older edition of Warhammer Fantasy TTRPG from a matt colville video.
Nice way of building a mechanic around the idea of 'fail foreward'
This mechanic sounds really great and narratively interesting! Definitely looking forward to the kickstarter and eventually the full game :D
Awesome! How often can we expect sneak peaks into the game like this?
The Second you mentioned Events things clicked on the Goals section of the character sheet we've seen in promo. That's what the checkmarks are! events towards the goal.
Close! Events are a bit like "Clocks" in Blades in the Dark. The GM can create a situation where Opportunity or Complication results can build toward a positive or negative event like "reinforcements arrive" or "the Everstorm hits" (in addition to the usual ways to spend Opportunity and Complication). Goals are more like character development milestones; in general, your goal is to check progress toward a Goal about once per session. When you complete a Goal, you get a Reward (which might be tangible, like an item, but is often a connection like a patron or a spren bond).
I'm excited to learn a D20 Tabletop system from your guy's game! It's been something that's been on a personal to do list of mine for awhile, but has always seemed intimidating to jump into a local campaign where everyone is familiar with it and I'm not. This seems like the perfect motivation to buy, learn and try and integrate with a group. Love this world and have loved your company's games since the original Call to Adventure.
We hope you enjoy it! We've done our best to make this a system that's approachable for new players, while providing depth for experienced TTRPG fans. So far it feels like we're striking that balance.
I do not have experience with TTRPGs, but the plot die sounds incredible! Cannot wait to try this out!
You are successful but now everyone is trying to imitate your maneuver of using the bridges as a shield and causing the fight to be lost. Sadeas is not happy
Love it!
Sounds a lot like the advantage/threat from the Star Wars FFG system
This is so cool! I have a question about the stormlight miniatures, since they were planned to be used along with this product. Does that mean they will be available in retail anytime soon? Again, I'm super pumped to play this with my friends ❤
Since advantage/complication is also on the d20 how is double advantage/complication, or even both in a single role handled? Cancel out, resolve both?
Very good question. As a GM, my default reaction is to go with with d20, but thinking a little bit more about it, I actually like the idea of them both being in effect and not canceling each other out. Like a player is rolling for a desperate move and the outcome could straight kill them if they fail. They roll a Nat 1, but a 6 on the plot di. I like the idea of them failing the action, but just enough they manage to survive by the skin of their teeth or just dead enough they can be brought back somewhat easily. Or the reverse where they roll a 20 and a 1 on the plot di. They succeed on what they were attempting to do, but take a massive wound in the process, possibly killing them and them going out in a blaze of glory.
The quality of the plot die will depend on the quality of the GM.
What booths will you be at for us to purchase the plot dice?! My daughter and I will be there Thursday morning!
Look for us in Room 126!
@@BrotherwiseGames same room as the RPG games are being played?! Then, maybe we'll see you there Saturday at 6:00 p.m. if we don't get there earlier! Thanks again for all the updates!
Sounds a little like what Daggerheart is also going for. Overall, I would say the idea is good, but of course I have to say that since I am working on a similar system as well. But what really don't like is the name. Plot feels like something preplanned, and that talk about story also creates an impression that this is not emerging as it should be in the RPG space. I am sure it is not meant that way, but the connotation and implication is nevertheless there. Thus I would suggest renaming that. Maybe tension die?
Why not use a 1d3 for the plot dice?
I need this dice for my campaings
Would be cool to have, but you can also use a standard d6.
1: +4 to roll, but have a Complication
2: +2 to roll, but have a Complication
3-4: Nothing changes
5-6: Opportunity
@@zedgathegreat9122 Just use 2 and 4 for Complication so you don't even have to map numbers imo.
Is the game going to be a 5E compatible game? I personally am hoping for something more divergent.
This is not 5e compatible and is an original system!
One downside I see to the Plot Dice is that you basically need that special die to make it work. It doesn't sound easy to port it to a regular d6 due to the bonuses applied. Opportunity doesn't appear to apply any bonuses, and complication is a bonus of either 2 or 4. So trying to map that to a d6, what do you do? 1 blank, 2 complication, 3 blank, 4 complication, 5 and 6 opportunity? It's a little awkward, especially since you also mention that the d20 treats lowest face as complication and highest face as opportunity.
If that's your objection why not just put the bad ones on 1 and 2 and then the middle ones are neutral? This is far easier to "port" than the Genesys dice it is based on
@@BrainGeniusAcademy That would be the smart way to do it if they had no numerical value associated with it, but the complications are worth 2 and 4 respectively. A player will roll their dice and get a 1, and then have to stop and think 'okay, the die says 1 but I actually add 4'. Because the number on the die does not match the number they're supposed to add, there's a little moment of mental translation that has to be done, where you gotta remember the rules and think 'a 1 means +4.' That little moment of stopping to think introduces mental friction. It's a pain point where many players will mess up, forget, go 'oh right, that should have been 3 higher, my bad.'
So, the idea is to slowly get rid of the gm? Interesting.
Not really! The GM is still prominent in our system - they decide when the plot die rolls happen!
