Portrait Drawing Fundamentals DVD - www.proko.com/dvd1
This video is a timelapse of the drawing I did in my previous video, which was a critique of an orc drawing by John Willis. After I posted that video I went back and made some changes based on critiques that you guys gave me. Watch at 11:35 to see me make changes to the expression of the face.
    GIVEAWAY:
Find me on facebook and reshare my post to this video. I'll randomly pick a winner on March 29th.

There is something very beautiful about a monstrous Orc's face slowly appearing in time to some smooth Jazz.

    Proko,
This is my first time ever seeing one of you're videos. Great work with this piece. As i was watching the video i felt like the eyes were going a different direction, but made me happy to see that you fix that near the end. The expression fix at that end was a nice touch, made this pop a lot better. Great video.

I keep trying to make all my drawings look as smooth as possible by evening out the white areas in the dark spots, but this drawing has shown me that not doing that can have just as strong an effect. This shading looks realistic while not needing that blending, which is something I’ll use going forward

Weak... That's the point! Trying over and over again until you learn it (which takes A LOT OF TIME). Giving up just shows how much passion you have for art. I used to be bad at drawing and had almost no time to practice, but what did I do? Did I give up? Nope, I stayed till 4-5 in the morning drawing gestures nearly every day (night). It doesn't really matter how late it is though the point is, if you want to be able to draw you must first get trough no being able to.

I think this whole convo about which is better shows an interesting pitfall of technical facility. Personally I prefer Stan's drawing to the original, I think overall its shape design and structural qualities make it more pleasing to look at, at least for me.
But conversely, having such an established process can detract from the emotional qualities of the image, because you're following process rather than guttural instincts where you throw down 'angry' lines because you just feel them.

Are those charcoal pencils? The diameter is massive. The watching of this is instructional on rendering because Proko is using proper technique. I've got some bad habits I need to break, and I like that you can easily see how he uses the sides of the utensil and that the different levels of pressure being applied are easy to determine.
@ Proko: What level of hardness or softness did you use? I can't tell if that's graphite or charcoal. I love that drawing, too. Brings back memories of the work of Larry Elmore and Jeff Easely.
