I think the critics' contentions are on point and furthermore, their dismissal is not meant to be specifically hostile, but merely to uphold the ideals we all, as serious writers and apostles of the church of fine art, have been taught to uphold. Coelho has merely proved that a writer, absent all art save that which is native to him, can nontheless tell a cogent and moving story with symbolism and mysticism as elements that speaks to many people. Critics forget that most people are not sophisticated and just don't care about artistic merit. They like what they like.
