Columbia made some very good cartoons in the 30's and 40's, but were overshadowed by the bigger studios; it was considered a "B" movie company for years. The cultural references and political incorrectness are indicative of the times; that's why a number of them were not re-released later on.
so the five little girls in the jack in the boxes are actually the Dionne sisters, the first set of quintuplets to ever survive birth, they were born in there home by a midwife and there father, the heaviest baby was 2 pounds while the smallest was only 1 pound and 13 ounces, they were born in 1934 so the toys modeled after them were to resemble the girls at 2 years old, a few weeks after there birth they were removed from there home under false statements saying the girls parents were unfit to raise them, despite them already having 3 healthy smart children before the girls were born, they spent there early childhoods being paraded around and shown off by the doctor in charge of them, having advertisement banners, newspaper stories, shows and toys made about them, by the time the girls were 7 they were given back to there parents and have since sewed the Canadian government for what they have been put through, as of 2023 only 2 sisters are alive
And it was rumored that Oliva Dionne was talked into putting the girls in a Circus. That's why they were taken away. Plus the house had no elrctricity and they were leeping them warm near the wood stove.
2:43 There was this scene where the three chicks are jumping over the dog’s string body, and an extended version was shown recorded on an old TV in a sepia tone, and the dog helped the chicks go under his body and then he turns up his nose while the chicks jump. I don’t know why the scene was cut, or was I thinking it’s like that?
I guess we can say This is inspiration for Pixar’s toy story ,Inanimate Objects comes to life once the humans lived in the area but when they come back they go back to their usual inanimate objects to do.
Anna has it right (sort of), eggs were food and not some anthropomorphization of a doe-eyed creature. The cartoon played with the concept of food being fun and not to eat. This was the thirties when food was scarce and money even scarcer. You did what you could to put food on the table in those days and seeing a novelty film and a newsreel cost 30 cents which was big money at the time. Side note: You could go to the matinee and enjoy the show as many times as you liked. Your 30 cents was good for the whole day. Compare that to the fifty bucks or so in the modern movie theater for one show. 30 cents in 1936 is $5.42 today, (adjusted for inflation). People grew livestock for eating during the depression. If they developed attachments, it's certain that that went away with an empty belly and a few days without a decent meal. The society was mostly agrarian and the suburbs wouldn't have been invented yet (the late forties).
GREAT hyperactive Night at the Museum type action. The cartoon is very richly drawn and painted even if it is a bit faded. I liked spending 6 minutes in this cartoon world but will check out the uncut albeit b&w version although I am pretty sure there will be a cut when the matches become black.. That gag at 2:00 made me a little queasy.
Columbia blew a chance to have the biggest goldmine in Hollywood animation. Frank Capra convinced Walt Disney to leave United Artists and bring his cartoons to Columbia. But Disney couldn't get the money he wanted out of studio boss Harry Cohn and so, after a few cartoons at Columbia, he left for a better deal at RKO. Not only did RKO distribute the Disney shorts, but also "Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs,""Dumbo," etc. Later, Columbia discovered another cartoon goldmine when it released the UPA (Mr.Magoo) cartoons.
I'm 35 right now and was a '90s kid (I was born in '88) and so I don't really know much about these famous actors in this video except for the Three Stooges.
warner had looney tunes paramount had fleischer columbia had screen gems universal had woody woodpecker mgm had tom and jerry at this point it seems like the only studio back then that didn't do animation was 20th century fox
hello everybody, please help to find the cartoon, its old american cartoon like this, may be Tex Avery, may be not... it's about the Island with musitions, it begins with... Sanditches Island, Hamborger Island... or something, and plate - Dont forget the onions, may be the title of the cartoon is The swing melodies, but unfortunately I dont remember, thanks in advance if you know what I mean
Man, that must have been hilarious comedy in 1936. No wonder I never saw those old cartoons on the tee-vee. From the late 70's to the mid 80's. These were just too lame. The very first time I ever see this one. The merchandise in the store was a common theme back then on all studios. Some did them better while some, well didn't.
A lot of these cartoons had "blackface" and kept showing the old white man as always successful. That's why studios don't release them anymore because of "feelings"

Technically Toy Story was made in the 1900's also...
Toy Story WAS made in the 1900s 😂
@@thatundergroundflavorrareo3194 early 1900s lol
Night at the museum and toy story mix story..
This is incredible!
And I ❤ the tributes to the legendary comedy teams of Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers AND the Three Stooges! ❤❤❤
And a tribute to the Dionne quintuplets too
2:04 That was so creepy and messed up!
2:05 yup, going to have nightmares
Yup, that part got me 😂
😭🤣
Yeah ..
damn, I was gonna say that. also, would that be considered a botched abortion?
😂😂😂
What real talent to create such a lovely , cartons. loved by all ages .
الرسوم القديمة لها طابع خاص في قلوبنا

There were already five more Dionne children at the girls birth. They weren't supposed to have been born until July.
And it was rumored that Oliva Dionne was talked into putting the girls in a Circus. That's why they were taken away. Plus the house had no elrctricity and they were leeping them warm near the wood stove.
I loved this as a child back in the early '80s.
2:03 Geez louise. That's horrifying. 😱
I was looking for this comment! Caught me off guard
And you're the first I've seen to bring this up. What is with people these days?!
مهما كبرت تبقى روح الطفوله تجذبني إلى الرؤيه إليها مرة أخرى ❤🥺
Great cartoon very original thank you very much
wild! Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers and the Three Stooges all in the same flick!
All Columbia contract actors. Columbia pictures got to milk them even more with second rate cartoon moving pictures.

So goddamn cute and clever. R.i.p. Opa the cartoonist. I miss you so much
Night at the museum?
Or Toy Story?

Cartoons have done that story for years. This wasn't the first one and the Toy Story movies aren't the last.
Children's stories about toys coming to live existed even before Toy Story
Those old cartoons are beautiful
a joy to watch thank you for the posting🙂
That talking raw egg was extremely disturbing, it's the equivalent of an undeveloped fetus D:
what were they thinking!?!?
Word! It was honestly sad.
They didn’t have sick minds, it was a broken egg that cried.
You have it talking and looking like a fetus.
For gods sake its a bloody cartoon.....little snowflakes
Look at the year. They didn't think of things like that back then.

These shorts are so adorable. No need for a plot or any of the sorts, just give the animators the task to do whatever comes to mind.
Something about the singing egg yolk disturbs me lol

I didn't knew that existed a cartoon division of Columbia pictures...

The egg that is a yolk rather than a fully formed chick is really disturbing.
2:43 It still bugs me that the music skips off weirdly here. Like part of the song was cut off and reattached.
