      Honestly if it was actually canon that he won control over Ermac over all the souls, he'd actually prove Twindel wrong and of course he wouldn't take her thirsty ass back. Hell, if this was MKX Ermac with Kahn's soul inside him then that is even more impressive. Jarrod through sheer force of will, took control from thousands of souls, including Kahn himself. Would have been an interesting thing to see past Kahn see his greatest creation be took over by the man he stole everything from and Twindel seeing that her former husband was powerful and even moreso but now despises her.

      Most of the retcons don’t hurt the continuity at all…The Lin Quei, Nightwolf, Kung Lao, Kitana, Jade, and Jax being part of the story earlier than originally said hasn’t interfered with how any of it played out. Neither has Kabal’s unexpected twist in origin. It wasn’t a change, we just didn’t know what it was. If anything these changes have only added to the story.

    Nightwolf being a title - and one for whom people are so carefully selected - actually ties in to how the Native Americans based their societal structure on that of wolves, referring to them as "the teachers."
    Wolves can pick out ideal pack roles from their pheromones quite early into their lives, and have a surprisingly rigid and disciplined hierarchy.
    I'm wary of giving NRS enough credit to have done that on purpose but...

      @@Thomas20Smith damn i would’ve loved to see a new nightwolf trying to restore grey wolf nightwolf back to life or straight up trying to kill him so he won’t be a threat/end his suffering as revenant. this gives into my idea that is to also include frost as the lin kuei representative in the kombat kids, as long as her evilness is slowly built up and it can give her more character instead of being “female sektor but cold” as well as the new nightwolf being the shaman representative as they’re very spiritual and earthly and could give us more to this new title thing and more backstory to the shamans in mortal kombat because they have little to none lore. that way we have the kombat kids all representing each faction that protect earthrealm ala: lin kuei, shirai ryu, shaman, white lotus, and special forces. (sf get both jacqui and cassie because nrs are obsessed with special forces obviously, plus we need more females to even out my idea of 6 kombat kids of being 3 male (male nightwolf) and 3 female (with frost) also as they’re unique in a way… well as long as we fix jacqui up… like a lot)

    I think what makes the Nightwolf Mantle special is that it A) adds some history to the character and his tribe that doesn't conflict with his backstory, and B) elevates him into one in a long line of powerful warriors that Raiden would be familiar with, rather than just saying "and then a shaman with warrior powers joined his team".

    I feel like the Netherrealm itself isn't as terrifying as it was in the Original timeline/Midway Era. You had to have a tainted soul in order to even exist there. And it felt like actual Hell. Now you can send an Earth based army there to fight demons, and it feels more like Mustafar than a afterlife for the condemned.

      Deception was the one who introduced the "tainted soul" concept, and shinnok overthrowing lucifer, and the strung-up corpse decorations, and the chaos god (kochal, god of the oni demons and the one who fucked up chaosrealm and made it chaotic in the first place), etc etc.
      And that's just netherrealm. Earthrealm gets more stuff, outworld gets more settlements than just shao kahn's palace as well as the introduction of the cryomancers, edenia is actually shown for the first time in game (no stages, but that gets fixed in armageddon), and deception also introduced chaosrealm and orderrealm -as well as the origin story, the one being, and the series' overarching narrative about the struggle between one being vs the elder gods that is a big reason why the plot of the games happens.

      @@ryanjohnson781 i disagree, as again - twitching corpses the locals in the city strung up and used as decoration. The wastes were a bit barren, but that's the point - nothing but zombies and oni demons are brave enough to walk through the wastes of hell.
      I would also disagree about chaosrealm. The realm is intentionally fractured into different micro-sections, as prior to kochal unleashing the Tempest that broke the realm - the realm wasn't broken and the pieces of land were drifting about disconnected to each other.
      I don't really get the criticisms about them not being eerie. Netherrealm has the same level of eerieness it always had, and chaosrealm has the floating coffins, gothic architecture, and Havik. Plus they both have people speaking backwards (while also saying something completely different in subtitles).

During the pre-Deception games (Mostly MK4) we only really heard about it through character bios and was the place Shinnok was banished (similar to the Bibles Satan being cast from Heaven). Calling the place hell gave it an instinct nightmare level of credibility.
      This is the place Scorpion and the original Sub Zero had to spend their afterlife. Ashrah had to earn her way out with a special sword only after slaying a certain amount of demons with it. Taven and Shujinko where powerful beings who felt uneasy and tainted just being there. I really do have to say I'm really fond of Kabal's retcon. Notably right after he faces Cyber Sub Zero and Sheeva and initially feels he has no choice but to just "go back to being Black Dragon", but when Raiden asks for his help, his VA and the motion capture actor really got across that down inside, he really does want to just help others and keep them out of the past he was forced to endure.
    While his burned looks are obviously shocking to "normal" people, I think it'd be hard to argue that there wouldn't be people who would find him to be a champion for the disabled (which was part of his initial concept; character has [thing] wrong with them but they end up with various powers because of it).

    The more I think about MK11s story the more it angers me, with MKX in my opinion having a great set up for the next game to focus on Dark Raiden and the Revenants being the primary antagonists, only for them to go back to being jobbers in MK11 with almost all of their corrupted and angry personalities gone and Dark Raiden being literally deleted from the story. I do think MK11s story has some good moments but overall the sheer amount of retcons and it’s treatment of many of the characters bring the story down a lot, and with ANOTHER possible timeline reset on the way after only 3 games I’m worried we won’t ever see satisfying conclusions for the Revenants or characters like Onaga to have any story relevance ever again…

The black dragon were flat out gone and dead until Kabal decides to bring them back as agents of chaos and decay because Havik convinces him somehow. I would buy that if it turned out that Havik used some kind of magic to twist Kabal's mind, but it is always framed as Kabal just deciding to do it despite it not having anything to do with him or his personality. I think there’s a potentially interesting story for Kabal with the SF and BD. Something about how the path to atonement is long, hard and it’s easy to slide back into bad habits if you don’t have people looking out for you. Sonya and Jax might be willing to work with him but might never be able to fully trust someone who’s been buddies with Kano. Kano who wants him back might use his connections and resources to make things hard for him. Maybe falsifying facts, incriminating him so he looks like a dirty cop. Just something that gives Sonya enough reason to doubt, feeding her distrust and paranoia. Stryker’s his lifeline. Vouching for him and keeping him on the straight and narrow. You know, cop drama stuff.

    It makes sense to me that Bo Rai Cho trained Liu Kang and Kung Lao. Wasn't the White Lotus Society set up by Raiden to train combatants for the tournament. Surely he would get the best martial artists he could find to help. And this is a way Bo can help without directly entering the tournament. Him training both the shaolin monks makes a ton of sense. But I also think it would be cool if, after they trained with Bo, they went on to train with Raiden and Fujin. Look at it this way: Liu has fire (heat) powers, and his fighting style is fast and direct.... like lightning (lightning is hotter than the surface of the Sun). Kung has wind-based moves, and even how he controls his hat mid-air can be explained as this.
    It would make sense to me for Raiden and Fujin to get involved in training the White Lotus members, even if some adaptions say they can't do anything at all.

A timeline where he isn't just a slave to someone else's whim and he can let that awesome silver hair roam free with his bro. Perhaps as the relaxed older brother to kuai liang, more willing to cooperate with all parties and forging good relationships with scorpion, tekeda and kenshi (to name a few). The retcons I really like were
    1) Johnny Cage character arc - I don't think Johnny had much interesting arc in the previous game. In the Netherrealm era not only they showcase his romance with Sonia (something from the movies) but also show him growing from arrogant actor into a more responsible hero.
    2) Scorpion and Kuai Liang becoming allies - This is double edge sword. On one hand I agree that having Quan Chi be the one who killed Scorpion's family makes Bi-Han into innocent man who was killed by Scorpion instead of rival who Scorpion killed after their rivalry went to far. However it gives a justifiable reason for him and Kuai Liang to become allies. In the previous timeline I don't see why Scorpion would feel bad for killing Bi-Han. Considering how driven by vengence he was, why would he care for this lin kuei whose brother and clan were responsible for killing his family? Even if only blamed Bi Han, I don't see he deciding to become his brother's protector.

      I like those changes, I wouldn't consider them retcons though because they're a result of events occuring differently in the NT. A retcon would be changing a character's backstory since Raiden's actions in the first tournament of the NT shouldn't have effected it in any way, like Mileena being created and awoken in MK2 instead of it being implied that she was created when Kitana was young and raised/trained alongside her like in the original timeline.

    If I had to make a tiny addition, it was mentioned by Raiden in the MK2 prequel comic that refusing such a challenge would lessen their standing with the Elder Gods and unbalance the furies. Tsung taking control of the MK Tournament was to unbalance things towards chaos, which would weaken Earth's dimensional barriers and allow him to enter our world. I also think the OG trilogy taking place one after the other is a retcon. MK2 is a bit inconsistent, since some things in the backstory suggests it takes place right after while others suggest a bit of time passed. I always got the impression from MK3's backstory that it takes place a year or two after MK2, due the backstory setup in that game, as well as the info in Mythologies where the whole Sindel thing was stated to take a decade to accomplish.
    But yeah, these retcons were pretty good. Especially Kabal's, shame they went nowhere with it after 9.

    I don't mind the story telling method of the last 3 games (fight, cutscene, fight, cutscene) but I also feel like this is the reason so many characters seem like weak jobbers now.
    Like back in the day the only canon Ls people took were actually apart of their stories most of the time or in someone's ending which half the time didn't even end up being Canon. So if you loved a particular character you didn't have to really except the idea of them having their ass handed to them by weaker character.
    Now these days because you need to have a fight in between each cutscene you HAVE to have someone in the receiving end of a beat down. Now characters like kotal Kahn look weak as fuck cause he's a VERY plot relevant character so he often need to appear in the story but because most characters only get 4 missions each it means kotal needs to be on the receiving end of a beat down more often.
    If Mk11 was an older game we would have just read/heard somewhere that Jade stopped him from executing all the tarkatans. But we could have interpreted that as her talking him out of it or having their soldiers turn on them or freeing the tarkatans in ecret. But instead we know it's because this "great and strong leader" got his ass handed to him by his own woman.
    Actually I think I just convinced myself that I hate this new formula 😂

    • @Wright805
      @Wright805 2 года назад +1

      The story-telling method could work if they got rid of the chapter system. It worked in DC vs. MK because:
      A) there was an in-story reason for why each character would win four fights in a row then stop.
      B) none of the fights felt like padding because there was a good justification for them (they showed how big a problem the Rage was).
      But the games that followed had no such justification.
      The best thing would be to use the same method as Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid. By not having character-specific chapters it avoids the restrictions and allows every character to get at least one or two wins.

    • @user-ru6nz6vt7n

      So many characters seem like weak jobbers because all the villains never get chapters,only the heroes get chapters.Leading the villains to lose constantly.An easy way to fix that is to give the antagonists chapters so they can win,but nrs studios wont do that for some reason

    • @ryanabrahams8061
      @ryanabrahams8061 2 года назад

      @@Wright805 exactly. I agree it worked better in MK V DC especially for the reason of the story related power fluctuations. That plot also prevented characters who lost from looking weaker than the character who beat them which solves that issue aswell.
      imo they would be better off putting in a proper campaign mode like they did with Armageddon. Armageddon was good cause it was a new a character whose already pretty powerful to begin with but also gains more power throughout the story so any Ls people have to him are not only justified but you arnt having canonise one character being more powerful than another.
      Shao kahn, for example went from only ever being beaton by lui kang and taven (who are very respectable people to lose to) to now being beaten by characters several characters who have historicly lost fights to historically mid tear characters cause everyone loses to everyone now
      That's the main issue with this formula. Too many fights now. Having a fight between 2 roster characters between every cutscene is just too much and it's canonised way too many losses for everyone
      They need to at least make you fight henchmen so that way the henchmen are jobbers instead of making top their characters into jobbers. And then make the roster character fights more uncommon

    If one can find more, I'm sure people would like to discuss it yes? Because quite frankly there is one you didn't mention, and that is *Smoke's backstory* fr MK9, which was by NRS and (in my opinion) pretty good in their part.

    Think you can do a Wasted Plotential on Resident Evil Code: Veronica X? For one thing, the way the game ended set up an epic final battle between survivors against Umbrella only for RE4 to cut that off in the opening narration, and there's Steve Burnside (I understand not everyone likes him but I'm not one of them) who was hinted to be brought back by Wesker to be used against Chris and Claire; Wesker dies in RE5 and Claire references Steve in Revelations 2 but she doesn't go looking for the guy she references in all the time spent working with Terra-Save, the same guy who she got close to and he professed his love for her before seemingly dying only to be taken, experimented on and hinted to come back.

    Jerrod being part of Ermac had SO MUCH potential for interesting story yet none of the writers did anything with it.
    They could have made it so that before MK9 story Jerrod managed to unite the souls inside Ermac to destroy the original entity and take control over Ermac's body, all the while pretending to be Ermac in order to plot Shao Kahn's downfall and help Earthrealm that would have freed Edenia in the process.

    One thing I liked before the comic shat on it was tremor.
    Ngl I kinda wanted tremor to had have something and with that dream realm shit and other stuff like becoming as powerful as a god...
    But nah a shotgun to the shoulder...
    So much potency and potential....
    Then again anything jot mk1 and 2 was basically the point B[.
    Other things I liked of nrs Era was having human smoke and sub zero being inverted in the cyberizaton and human cyrax and sektor before cyberization.
    And some more even if not done well or done nothing with.
    If can have a mix of the best of both the original timeline and nrs Era with a retooling and such...maybe add in some 3d combat gameplay and it be great.
    SERIOUSLY I want to enjoy shujinkos journey born of deception again...scorpion and his constant vengeance ad arc ,Liu Kang to actually be a monk instead of killing cuz muh fatalities, etc.
    Make a hard reboot that is consistent,retooled,and isn't shit with limited character chapter systems.
    Sigh...alas,never to be.
    In the end mortal kombat is just another victim of those people ruining huge ips for the sake of money and or ulterior motives.
    Like star wars,star treck, marvel and dc comics,game franchises like this...
    All ruined and tainted by greedy corperate entities and those they hire to produce the garbage.

    I hate the second Kabal retcon for 2 reasons. The first being that it removes a potentially interesting story arc for the character but also how much of a plot hole it creates in MK11. So he's apparently always been working for the Black Dragon, unless I am wrong, that would mean he was still on Kano's side for MK9, meaning he was on Kahn's side for MK9...so..how did he die? In MK9 he was on the heroes side so he was slaughtered by Sindel but if he WASN'T on the heroes side then who killed him and why? Was he just pretending to be on the heroes side and for some reason didn't betray them when the Lin-Kuei and Sindel attacked? Did Kentaro burning him make him switch sides for two seconds before going back to the evil side? I forget if MK11 even makes the attempt to explain this but he died and became a Revenant because he was on the good side, if he wasn't on the good side, how is he a revenant? Assuming this wasn't explained (please tell me if it was), this just shows how no thought is put in to these changes. What they likely saw as a meaningless retcon now creates a plot hole, good job Netherrealm.

    • @naos8116
      @naos8116 2 года назад

      Funny thing about that, is that Geras says: "You will be another of Raiden's victims", which in MKX, the revenants basically talking about that as putting their trust in Raiden is what got them killed. Which means somehow, he still fought alongside the heroes in the invasion, as he did in MK3.

    honestly sindel’s retcon is still a toss-up for me. sindel was never developed much as character, she get resurrected and is evil (whether that be due to a spell to make her obey shao kahn’s will or because that’s just how she is) and then we never get to really see her again. She was in deception and armageddon, but let’s be honest, i feel like the 3d-era wasn’t as story heavy as the NRS-era is, or the first like three were. If you weren’t the protag in konquest or the antagonist, your story as a character was pretty diluted in the 3d-era. so to me, sindel being evil doesn’t change much as everytime ive seen her in a story heavy way, she’s always been evil, regardless of the reason. I’ll have to see how she’s handled moving forward to see if she gonna be an interesting character, or if i think her place in the story would’ve been better as a hero.

    Very good reviews about Kabal and Nightwolf. And good lord do I HATE the dumb change/retcon (among many of course) that Mortal Kombat 11 made with Kabal. The concept of him leaving the Black Dragon to actually put his skills to good use with the police force was interesting. Along with Kano trying to lure him back to the baddies' side. But nope. Just toss that aside where he's always an evil prick cuz reasons and too stupid to stop and "think" about if what Kano said about a future Sonya maiming him was even true. That, and having an ending here he and Sareena, a character he's *never* interacted with, are a thing now. If Sareena got with anyone, it could be either of the Sub-Zero brothers (mainly the Elder).
    And the idea of the Nightwolf we get in MK11 being another with the title after the main one was killed back in MK9 would be interesting indeed. Though I too must admit that if that was the case and the main Nightwolf was just permanently killed like that, yet that would irritate me. 😅

  • @josephmachnik7488
    @josephmachnik7488 2 года назад

    Nightwolf is the original one because he is the one from the past. Per story mode, Kronika attempted to use him as one of her "past" warriors but he refused and she locked him up with Shang Tsung and Fujin so he couldn't get in her way. There hasn't been another game to see if the "title" plays out.
