The man said it himself. “What’s good for deer is not good for turkeys.” I’ve often thought the same thing. I don’t think a lot of people realize that turkeys live off of red oak acorns from December thru February. Fire & Timber stand improvement are great but most land owners are selling the oaks. “Money trees”

Sadly trapping season has ended but I was able to catch the last month of it and took 8 raccoons and 3 opossums off of our 100 acre farm. And I’m sure there is yet a bunch to be caught next season I probably could have caught more if I had more traps but I don’t think I did too bad for only having a dozen dog proofs.

Look I’m from ms, I have a good bit of private land. And it’s very simple to me, when I started trapping nest predators at a high rate my numbers increased significantly because nesting was protected. Said that to say this if we could get state government to put a price on hogs, coon, possum, skunk, hell it doesn’t have to be much you would drastically see an increase in trapping to help these monarchs out. And yes I know some of these trapping regs are so outdated and need changing.

Do you think the large amount of tracts dedicated to growing pine trees in the southeast could be part of the problem in terms of their "management" practices (or lack of)? I've heard that some of the tactics used to prepare clearcuts for replanting (like spraying chemicals to kill all new growth) might be bad for wildlife. And also , it seems to me a monoculture of around 10 year old to mature pine trees would be sub-par habitat for wildlife.

I wonder if their prediction model(s) account for gobbling induced by hunter’s making calls. The histogram he showed suggested gobbling was much more active in the spring time, but the numbers could be a bit higher due to the hunting season also happening at the same time.

I love turkeys as much or more than any other turkey hunter...and am all about the research and information....HOWEVER, I am dismayed by Alabama forcing public lands to stop hunting at 1pm...there is no common sense answer as to how time in woods has ANYTHING to do with numbers when u have a quota limit...the quota limit and dates should be the limitation of such irrational rules....what the "suites" dont understand is, when u make things illegal, they don't stop happening, they just create more criminals...take for example Alabama's new (1 Turkey the 1st 10 days of the season)...that 1 rule is gonna be violated a ridiculous number of times because nobody wants to be restricted about how much time they are in the woods...which is exactly why so many are irate about the 1pm rule...if numbers are the concern, cut the quota but DO NOT limit our time in the woods or punish someone for 9 days of no hunting just because they were successful...I'd much rather a 2 or 3 bird limit and leave us alone about the when, where and how...we pay for all this to take place and to restrict our time in the woods is nothing less than a travesty...again, I love turkeys, never have I taken a limit and dont care about tagging out, I JUST WANT TO BE IN THE WOODS and yall took that away from us, totally the wrong way to go about what u are wanting to accomplish
To sum up, NUMBERS has nothing to do with TIME IN THE WOODS
Drop the quota and allow us to be out there when we have the opportunity to be out there!
