Oh yeah, Stella was my first Yello record and when Ciel Ouvert blasted out of my cheap d.i.y. speakers rattling the entire room I thought : when I grow up I`ll get me real big ones so I can explore the whole magic of this ! And that`s how it went...

I own (and fully restore these decks) a Studer A810 and a Revox PR99 MKIII. $15,000 for a B77 is absolutely an audiophile grift! These decks are being gussied up only because they are plentiful, DURABLE, and very good to begin with. Not to mention VERY easy to repair and modify. It is the low hanging fruit.
Also the community has created brand new electronics and cosmetic parts for them, including various digital counters. I service these decks for many years, there is nothing special about them other than real quality. Someone else does this with Technics decks, because they look cool, are easy to get and well designed. And finally there are some Tascam's that are being painted as well. They are ALL very good machines, BUT you CANNOT possibly go wrong with a Revox if you want a machine that will outlive you. You can actually build one yourself.
But notice how the most expensive "Audiophile" articles are usually being marketed by old guys with hearing that can no longer match the gear. I myself am 60 now, and I CANNOT hear above 15KHZ any longer. (Most music does not go above that anyway)
But I sure can try to convince YOU that one of my reels and tape will absolutely change your life! Problem is that only teenagers can actually fully appreciate what these decks can do, but teens can't BUY them. But us older guys with money like to delude ourselves into thinking we are still young, but with $$$.
    (Guilty!! 😁)
Reel to reel IS one of the best formats, but it is above all today a NOSTALGIA and very TACTILE format, like vinyl. You touch it, you see it actually DOING something. I do not enjoy a "dead" digital box as much as a "living" working, analog MACHINE.
My machines play and record just as well as these offerings from various boutiques that sprang up just to extract money from this hobby. (All these decks were tossed into dumpsters 20 years ago, no one wanted them when digital came along.) I do not blame them. Business is business and many want to re-live their youth, me being no exception.
But don't kid yourself, the format has limits. A $2000 rebuilt Revox with good heads sounds identical to a $15,000 revox with pretty new colors and a giant power cord. The limit IS in the tape itself. Tape and a magnetic head can only do so much. Which is WHY we moved on in the first place.
But hey, if it makes you feel good.... by all means. We only live once. My A810 cost me $2600 15 years ago and I completely restored it. I just "enjoy" it. Same with my Revox. It is just a "reel" 😉 pleasure to run them. But my point is: Stay in reality. You are buying something that outperforms YOUR hearing if you are older than 40.
It's like buying a 4k tv and swearing it's better but YOU desperately need LASIK! 🤣 (Which I really should have)
Next time old guys like me try to swoon you with "boutique" gear, sure...... But get a hearing test at a doctor first and see if the hobby is for the sound or just "because you can!" A rebuilt B77 in BLACK is a sweet deck.
    Cheers!

You make a lot of fair points, but surely a 'new' (even if manufactured with some reconditioned parts) machine from the original manufacturer, Revox, is always going to cost a lot more than a 30/40 year old one, even one that has been restored.
How much would it cost to manufacture my A80, say, in Switzerland nowadays? I love my 40 / 50+ year old Studers and I could never afford a new one, neither back then nor now. But thank god somebody at the time could, so we can afford and enjoy these magnificent machines. Your restorations are an audiophile bargain, if you think about it like that!
As far as us old folks go: whilst my hearing (bandwidth) isn't as good as it was 40 years ago, for sure, but my listening ability has almost certainly improved. I can clearly hear the difference between my A80, A812 and Technics RS1500 tape recorders. And between different turntables, tonearms, cartridges, amplifiers, cables, loudspeakers... And DACs, 'digital sources', equipment supports, mains supplies and so on and on...
If anyone can hear a difference and they like it, then why not buy it, or aspire to it, if they can't afford it?
      Cheers! I appreciate your thoughts.

@@DaveDenyer Revox DOES sell fully factory reconditioned decks. They are actually a bargain with a warranty, even less than what some people think a used one is worth on ebay. I did look it up.

Just imagine if you could buy a 308, fully remanufactured by Ferrari themselves to as-new condition... I applaud that Revox are doing this and maybe this will lead to, one day, them resurrecting the Horch House reel to reel tape recorder project that was shelved a few years ago...

@@DaveDenyer I think Revox could do a killing if they started to produce their machines again. Tape is slowly being revived but at £15,000 is a bit steep to say the least! There is a fella in UK called Brian Reeves that restores the revox machines back to spec or better and a complete refurbishment to as good or better in most cases than direct from factory brand new for around £500 give or take depending on how much has to be restored/replaced Those tapes though seem a fair price for the standard reels, can't see it being worth £1500 though, you probably couldn't tell the difference in the sound quality anyway.

@@Moonlightshadow-lq4fr I'll have to get in touch with Brian Reeves, he'd be an interesting chap to talk to and perhaps point to from my reeltoreelrambler website. Thanks for the pointer!
I do agree, if Revox were to introduce a new tape machine I'm certain they do very well and it'd really kick start a tape revival.

12:30 Small correction here, the Yello Revox machines are re-manufactured old machines.... not new machines.... revox do this service for anyone who sends an old machine back to them.... but they do not make the B77 machine anymore. They even repaint them. They are however as good as new. But the price for the Yello branded one is a scam in my opinion.

    • @DaveDenyer
      @DaveDenyer  4 месяца назад

You're right Paul, I understand that they are 'remanufactured', presumably from a combination of old and new parts. Certainly they won't be using 1980s capacitors and the like. I think you can buy a 'restored B77 from Revox for around £8k...
If they want to make a very limited "Yello" special edition, it's entirely up to them. I can't see why anyone would call that a scam. They all sold out within a couple of hours anyway, so clearly at least ten people agreed...
