I could not disagree more about your complaint about Peter teaching Ellen how to properly dunk a doughnut or effectively hitchhike or what a real piggy-back ride is. It tells so much about his character, that he feels she must learn about how normal, working class people do these mundane things. Also, it is so endearing. It is from these little lessons that she starts falling in love with him. It was from these scenes that *I* started falling in love with him, because he was so cute under his gruff veneer. They are essential to the budding of their romantic feelings for each other.
The misunderstanding element to the film may be cliche now, but then it wasn't. It Happened One Night is considered to be the first romantic comedy - the first of an entire genre of films that is still going strong today. You shouldn't hold that against it - if anything, it's a testament to it's legacy.
Hello. As I said in the review, it may not have been cliche then, but it is now. And after seeing the misunderstanding thing in so many other movies, it's annoying to see it anywhere, old movies or not. So this movie is hurt by the misunderstanding with modern viewings because we've seen it so many times by this point. And IHON is faaar from the first romantic comedy film, which is a genre that was established in film during the silent days. Thank for watching and starting a discussion. I do enjoy chatting and discussing film with people.
Great film. It makes u warm and fuzzy inside and albeit a simple emotion its incredibly tough to get that sentiment out of the audience so easily and effortlessly. So while being a simple film it did what most films cant do , which is to believabily capture the essence of falling in love in a natural manner. So your review is correct here where the actors onscreen chemistry and the adventurous journey they undertook and script were responsible for this masterpiece and i feel a lot of romcoms have taken inspiration from this movie and the reason is because its a love story done right. And its pretty darn original but the trove of inspiration for later romantic movies it contributed to shows just what a masterpiece this is
I love your reviews because they're always honest. Just watched the Criteron Collection blu ray of this movie & agree with nearly everything you've said. However, I've got to say I prefer Roman Holiday a lot more to this movie, which has a very similar plot (Capra even originally owned the production rights.)
Jamie Taylor Thank you! I really love this film. So I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. This is terrible to say (especially since my mother was a fan of Roman Holiday and would watch it often), but I've never seen Roman Holiday. Should out it on. My very long watch list. Didn't know Capra owned the rights to it for a time. Interesting.
The Cinematic Packrat Roman Holiday is actually so much better than this and is one of those rare "perfect" movies. I liked this movie, but didn't fall in love with it as much as I thought I would have (when compared to Roman Holiday). It's kind of like how Singin' In The Rain is better than An American In Paris, but the latter got most of the acclaim.
Great review but I think it's best not to review old films by modern conventions or stereotypes but by the context of the time in which It was made. But love the channel
Thank you! I get what you're saying. I think a critic does need to keep in mind certain things of the time in which a film was made. So maybe they give the film a bit of a break if something in it is really cliche by modern standards, BUT they'll still reviewing a film now. I'm still reviewing a film now. It's not 1934 anymore. I can't talk about a film and people watching the review can't totally approach the film from a 1934 perspective because it's 2021. So while I might give the film a break if it has a stereotype that's prevalent now but wasn't then, I still have to acknowledge and get across in the piece I'm creating that that stereotype might be a problem for a modern viewer or that it was a problem for me watching the film today. So I get what you're saying, but I can't completely go one way or the other. I have keep in mind 1934 stuff while also watching and relating it in a 21st century context, if that makes sense. Thanks for watching! :)

Keep in mind, I don't hate the moments. I enjoy them. I just think they could just be a little better.
Great movie ever, great actors lovely Claudette Colbert and clark gable R I P both
I loved this movie. Who cares what critics say. This was a terrific film. It won a lot of awards and it deserved every one.

Jamie Taylor I'll have to check it out then. I don't think I'll enjoy it more than this film, but, hey, I've been wrong before. Haha.
Roman Holiday sucks.
