I am becoming an Ivanchuk fan after watching your channel for some time. It is also refreshing to see the other side of the attack. Games with brilliant attacks are frequently featured, but games where an attack is calmly fended off with precision and insight don't seem to be featured as often by commentators. Thank you for selecting this.
Ivanchuk´s king makes me think of Neo in Matrix with bullets flying around him but never losing control.I´m really enjoying your videos on Vasily´s games, thanks a lot! I was active in chess when Ivanchuk came out in the late 80es,and now I´m enjoying chess again after many years. Is great to see how this man displays his talent! Thanks again!
Most of players consider their kings as slow and feeble creakers, but not Vassily! His king is a young and ambitious lad that wants blood of his enemies no matter what!
Amazing game by Ivanchuk, it made me realize how little I know chess compared to these grandmasters. To have your king on d4 with all those pieces and not to falter is unthinkable. True mastery.
Qb7 is the real power move here. He's still got his king in the middle of the board and the enemies pieces, but he's like "eh, not concerned, let me grab that free pawn while you try to figure out how to attack".
Chucky's king march might as well rival that of Nigel's immortal king march or may i even call it the ''King March of the Millennium''' 1,010th like!!! for good ole Ckucky!!!
Harabas349 I find Nigel's king march a bit underwhelming in my humble opinion, friend. I recommend you check out ChessNetwork's video titled "Is this the King of all King Walks?" White's king, after castling, went from g1 to h8 in 9 moves while being placed under fire from a bishop and 2 rooks supported with pawn advances and a knight. If it was any random game, maybe I'd just laugh it off. But, after knowing it was GM-level, I knew I had to look at it in a new light. I needed to get a new jaw after watching that amazing game in the video.
I honestly forgot why I loved chess so much, but there are so few people I know that like to play at a serious level. These videos are amazing! Thank you
You forgot to mention one thing.. That the rook sac would have worked with the bishop on h4 and it fails with bishop on g3.. if Wei Yi had played it one move earlier, it would have been more complications.. Or if Ivanchuk had played the same King capturing rook and capturing the pawn on d4, he would have been mated in 2.. Just one move made the difference between black winning and losing! AgadMator, pay attention.. Lol!
17...Rxe3 18.Kxe3 d4+ 19.Kxd4 Rc4+ 20.Qxc4 Qe5# .. that is mate if Ivanchuk played the same 2 moves he played in this game i.e Kxe3 and Kxd4... That is what I told... A great win it would have been...
Yes! Black sac'ing the rook earlier instead of the C5 pawn move is jsut as bad , if not more obviously worse for Black. White happily accepts the black rook and then retreats.
Your videos are really interesting and well explained, I stumbled upon them by complete coincidence but I have to say I love them! Please keep up the good work!

Agadmator, your analysis are always spot on and mostly you manage to totally cover precisely that what matters to the game - you don't waste any of the viewers' time, and are giving 'em it all. Besides being impressed by your knowledge, insight overview (if that is the right word, I translates it?) I too like all about you, your personality, your style. I however feel in this game, I am missing a move or two that really should have been covered. Where @ 2:16 black plays pawn to c6, with which he again offers white's queen the chance to grab pawn b7. Tot analyse that after White's Qxb7 likely would follow (Black) R b8, (Wh) B x f6, (Bl) Q x f6. First of all, here you state that White's wouldn't like to play Q x a7 - and I really would have liked you to illustrate us why with a few moves. But what I really don't understand is that you don't mention why White (also) wouldn't grab the c6 pawn next. AND, as it would be a way to prevent that, why Black wouldn't play Knight x f6 instead of touring /recapturing with the Queen as you project.
Man I just love your videos, I watch one or two every day, I love how you make jokes and barely laugh at them, everything is cool, only one downside, you talk really slow, that I have to crank the speed to 1.5 or 1.75 and it feels normal, that one day I watched you on my smart tv which doesn't have that option, and it hit me, you are a real life slow motion guy xD Cheers mate
Man seeing his King on d4 made me nervous for Vassily! If I just glanced at that position (albeit with my inexperienced eye) I would have thought it was over for him!
Is the quote you provide for this video one from this game? The only player that has this approach, with this brilliance, known to me, is Morphy. It could well be titled: "The King Goes To War," or, "The Warrior King."
Very interesting game indeed. Beautiful analysis, Agadmator. Well, with those Black knights, rook, bishop and queen placed at the center of the board and the White king having been lured right into the middle, I would have called it a game in favour of the Black. But then that's why I am not a Grand Master :D
Nice positional development by Ivanchuk, not rushing forward to grab pawns and clean looking arrangement on the second and third row. He should make a good player😁. The opponent was relying on tricks and tactics instead of a well developed plan.
5:41 Although not obvious at first, but the 2 knights are on 2 of the worst positions possible, one is 3 squares away diagonally the largest knight-distance possible on 8x8 board (takes 4 moves to occupy and 3 moves to check/attack the king's square) the other knight takes 3 moves to occupy and 2 moves to check. The Bishop is amazingly placed though but is passive and does the job of cutting off escape routes. And apparently the Queen and Rook somehow can't make any good active moves. Ivanchuk probably went in lightly calculating Knight and Bishop continuations and deeply calculating Queen and Rook continuations.
A lot of people forget that the King's attacking prowess is evaluated at 4 points - more than that of a Bishop or Knight! This game speaks volumes about the importance of centralizing your pieces, whether it be a pawn... or a King!
Pawn d4 move was played, with thought of threatening both rook and king and perhaps having the king back to f2, our dude here just casually plays Kxd4, which seems like an amateur move, but it was really a brilliant move! 😂 Bet you didn't see that coming, did you?! 😗 It was just brilliant stuffs from Chucky! 🤧
King marches are best suited for the sides of the board. The king is a deadly attacking piece in its own right. A king nicely placed in the center of a crowded board isn't always easy to exploit.
I'd have loved to see how Tal would have handled the game after that rook sacrifice. It was definitely a Tal move, but whether Tal would or wouldn't have made that move I don't know- but I'm curious if he could've still pulled a win after that sacrifice.
I am a little confused here, probably just missed something, but why didn’t wei yi play rook to b5 instead of king to g7 at 7:26. Doesn’t that force him to vassily to give up his queen or be forced into a checkmake?
