  • Poughkeepsie Gulch VS Black Bear Pass is gonna be one of your favorite videos if you haven't experienced them or maybe you have. These 2 trails get recognized as so of the toughest and deadliest trails in the country. While I'd agree that there can be disastrous mishaps if mistakes are made, I'm not sold on them being number 1 in either category just yet but they are definitely fun and exciting for the off-road adrenaline junky and are the toughest and most dangerous Colorado trails in the southern Alpine Loop.

That being said, a glacier is always moving, and that is what makes it a glacier. Since a glacier is always moving, it collects a lot of dirt and minerals as stated. Glacier water is very dirty. No one should ever drink it.

Lakes turn green because of a thing called "Glacial Flour" which is and algae and is a source of food for fish and other creatures that live there. Great Videos!! keep up the fun trips!! I used to do these trails 40 to 45 years ago in a 1979 Bronco, stock, stock, stock. I did use 15" wheels & "Desert Duelers" the tires I think were 28" Diameter. Was awesome fun. Never had company, always did these trails alone - great to relieve stress from a hecktic work week.

I had mentioned this in your last video about the Alpine Loop, but in the mid 70's, like '76 or '77 the family attempted Black Bear Rd as a short cut to Telluride from Silverton. What made this trip even more memorable than the scenery, scary drops, whistle pigs, and relatively undisturbed mines and equipment, was the fact we did this in a 1972 Dodge Power Wagon, a forest service surplus auction buy. 318 cui, 4 speed, 4.10 gears, and a power take of winch in the front bumper. To add to the complexity, add a 11ft slide in Mitchell & Sons cab-over camper. Whole rig weighed in at roughly 10k lbs. We made it through the first few rounds of switchbacks by driving down one and backing down the next leg. Roughly where you point out that many rigs flop into the creek was as far as we could get, the road got too narrow to fit the large cab-over camper. As we pondered what we were going to do, three Jeep Safari Jeep tours came lumbering up the road from Telluride. And they were not happy! My mother, a veteran at my Dad's shenanigan's, was in tears and three shades of green. Even though we could see Telluride from where we had stopped, we had to turn around and do all of that again back to Silverton. Probably best, I seriously doubt we could have managed the switchbacks after Ingram Falls. Boy do I want to make that trip again... in a Jeep!

I grew up in Montrose, One of my first jobs was driving to Telluride once a week to deliver and pick up stuff for repair. 1976 I think it was they closed black bear because a guy in a Suburban rolled it down the the switch backs. It was parked in town. It was maybe only 3 foot tall. The driver didn't survive. All of his family got out of the vehicle before he started down the mountain.

I just returned from a week long visit in that area and did Black Bear for the probably the 40th time. It is an absolutely beautiful pass with spectacular wild flowers. Luckily, we only saw 5 or 6 rigs on the trail that day. The parking area at the base of bridal Veil Falls was empty! Anyway, love your video. And Shanna! 😁

  • @SegoMan

Thanks for the visual on the Mineral Creek trail, we always camped at Corkscrew and went in from there.
53:45 Bridal Veil was the 2nd commercial hydroelectric on the planet to come on-line, the first was further up the creek and powered one of the mines up there. Both came online 4 years prior to Niagara Falls.
Tesla did his wireless electric research in Colo Springs. His ideas worked and was lighting / heating homes in Denver.. His wireless system required a jump-start from the power grid to activate , on one of his startups he had a back feed problem that took out one of the generators in C. Springs. They would not give him anymore power until he repaired the generator.. They allowed him to fix it as he designed it LoL..
Thanks Nikola for designing our future.

Like I previously said on a prior show, we were out there mid June and Ophir, Imogene and BB were closed but I did pave it, staying in Ouray, to get to see the falls. Yankee Boy and Alpine Loop was open except Pougheepsie. I did enjoy Corkscrew. It wasn't technical but it had a bit of everything. We saw a lot of tour Jeeps on Corkscrew. That is beautiful country. I remembered going deer and elk hunting in a area above wolf creek pass in the late 70's early 80's. Above the continental divide and above the timber line. There was about ten families on the trip. One of our hunting buddies went over a gravel road being too stupid after some cold snacks and down the canyon 75'. Thank god that our other hunter buddy wasn't with him as the A post was caved in on the passenger side. He wouldn't have survived. All survived but driver was very sore with rib injuries. A month later he had to fly back to Colorado from southern California to make arrangements to get his Chevy 454 camper special truck out of the canyon and to a repair shop. Lessons learned. BTW his wife didn't talk to him for the ten days we were there. John from Hayden Idaho. Formally from southern California.

Thank goodness for a beautiful tour and scenery. I rode my bike across the country in ‘76 and went through Telluride, Ouray for July 4th parade, over Independence Pass to Leadville from Aspen.
Loved the scenery then! Did not go off-road as my goal was to get to the other side of the continent and I had someone to meet in Breckinridge. I’d love to Mt. Bike there, but the altitude would probably make it soooo much work.
Nice to do it your way!
Found you from your breakdown on Casey’s recovery video. Glad I did!
Thanks for your gourmet and clean eating habits as well! Gives people a better goal to be!
Again, thanks for a beautiful and lovely attitude video!!

thanks to RUclips I saw a young fella do black bear descent and instead of doing a 12 point turn at each switch back he simply pulled on the hand brake which made the rear swing around in one smooth maneuverer

I saw you for the first time doing Black Bear during the storm with Matt and Hope. That was intense, and that one big rock that just missed you was a Big Wow!
