🏃♂️WHO AM I?
I'm Brendan, a Dad, trail runner, personal finance nerd, and lover of spreadsheets. I make videos about the basics of personal finance. I'm currently training for a 50k ultramarathon and investing often to become financially independent!
I’m a beginner in investing in index funds and didn’t know where to start. Thank you so much for the video!
VTI, VXUS, and VUG are a great combo for investors in the accumulation stage. Similar combos too like SCHB/SCHF/SCHG and ITOT/IXUS/IWY.
Like a delicious cocktail of investments 🍹
@@BrendanEvan please which app do u personally investing for long time like ur ETFs and do u have to pick or do they buy the ETFs for u
I literally said which apps in this video you’re commenting on @Josh 😆
Im using hargreaves lansdown and i cant find any of these index’s on there, what should i do?
Good selection and good cactus. Did I miss you mentioning the % of each one in your portfolio? Or did you not bring it up
Thanks! 🌵
Oh I didn’t do that math, there’s quite a few accounts and some definite overlap!
Great picks and honorable mentions. Do you invest in these within your IRA or taxable brokerage? And like a 🌵, do they grow without much water?
Both!! Thanks Michael! Always appreciate your comments. Oh they do, flans they are much less prickly as well
Considering the diversification of your portfolio, any reason to do not consider any Real Estate Index, such as VNQ?
I do have some VNQ in other accounts and I appreciate your comment!
I love your channel because you simplify financial lingo. As a person new to investing, it can quickly become very confusing. Forgive me for my ignorance, but are these dividend stocks? If they are, do what are the non-dividend equivalents? Also.... I grow and eat my own nopales! 🌵
Thanks Angela!
That’s one of my goals! I also have a series that’s available as a playlist on my channel: Terminology Tuesdays.
And these are all buckets of many different stocks. So they have a little dividend too! I’m not aware of a similar index that includes any company that has a dividend through. I wouldn’t be too afraid of dividends!
🌵 Any opinions on any solar power/EV charging index funds ?
They could be good, probably depends on the companies that make them up!
So what you're saying is I should strictly invest in 🌵. Seriously though, great content I started on M1 and your videos absolutely have helped clear up any doubts I had ! Thanks for all your knowledge!
Thanks a bunch!! 🌵
Thanks for getting straight to the point.
Barring that you’re heavy into BND within only a Roth, what would your opinion be, instead, with something like MUB vs BND since it is tax exempt?
I'm not that worried about taxes on a bond fund and with the amount we have invested 😅 But if you like it more, go for it!
Love your videos. I am currently binging them. Your comment on consistent investing reminded me what the creator "economics explained" always says "Time in the market always beats timing of joining the market." Lol
Thanks for your kind words!! I’m stoked that my videos may be helpful!!
My man. Definitely sharing this video. Easy breakdowns taking your time with no distracting music. Love it. Keep up the phenomenal work.
Thank you!! Yeah I’m always torn on the music. Less boring with it or more distracting?
🌵 thank you so much for this breakdown. You made this so easy to follow! Investinggggg now
Yessss! Get it!
I need to add VTI and VXUS, great video.
Thanks!!
I would like to see your suggestions on how to diversify. You mentioned never doing more than 30% in 🌵 bonds.
Indexes are generally pretty darn diverse inherently but making sure you’re mixing it up with different countries or sectors could be good too!
Considering the inflation we are experiencing and what appears to be the collapse in value of the US dollar, I consider bonds to be my lowest priority when it comes to investing. Would you say this is a justifiable opinion?
Your opinion on your own money is almost always justifiable!
@@BrendanEvan good answer!
Nothing beats the US $ regardless of what the economy is doing.
Do you have video made on what and how to invest during an US inflation period. Things to look out for? I’m a beginner and wanted to invest but not sure on the outlook :)
Probably should make that video! It’s a good idea. But as far as realistic actions, I doubt inflation significantly changes anything. The best way to cope with it is to invest wisely and in a lot of different things. The way to lose with inflation is to hold onto your money in the bank.
Awesome video and would love the behind the scenes … also you should try prickly pear margarita
Also hello fellow native cactus Arizonian
I’ve never had one! Need to try it now! Thanks! 🌵🍹
AZ fam! 🙌
🌵Thanks I’ve been investing and even though I have gains from selling options contracts my overall account is down. I need to start investing in index funds
Probably a good idea!
🌵🙌
Are these apps only for USA citizens? M1 app didn't accept my country Ph.number . What should I do?
I think they probably are, so in that case is search specifically for investing apps for your country.
@@BrendanEvan Tajikistan. I guess I will be broke for the rest of my life if I stay here. damn
Thanks for another great video! Investors who use index funds enjoy simplicity, tax benefits (beyond 401K / HSA and low fees) relative to stocks, and still get good returns. A good follow up might be to map these to similar funds from other brokers / investment companies. BTW, if you retire early and travel to Malta, check out the prickly pear liqueur...🌵
🌵🙌 We might have something similar here in Arizona with our prickly pear products too!
Thank you! 🌵
🌵🙌
which program would you recommend for Canadians, can i do it with Wealthsimple, or TD?
I’ve not done much looking into that but it’s a good question! You can likely find index funds in either one. I’ve not used those 2 personally. Look for low fees and get started! You can always change it later
Thanks for telling me about ESGV
👍👍
Cactus is the word. Thanks for the Information.
Anybody use M1 finance? I been putting money aside on acorns idk if that’s the best thing to do
I do!
Cactus! Oh and that pear thingy. :-)
🌵🙌
Thank you for making this video! I learned so much, subbed! :)
Beginner and learning a lot from your videos 🌵
Thats awesome, thanks Art! 🙌
i think of my investment portfolio like a 🌵. Withstanding the desert and storing water for the future!
Hey that’s pretty good!
I down loaded m1 I’m a bit confused the vanguard vti is stating it’s 224.08
Is this the correct fund?
The price changes all day every day but as of this minute, yeah it’s close to that price. Remember you don’t have to buy full shares (ie increments of $224) you can buy in dollar amounts and M1 will give you fractions of shares.
@@BrendanEvan ok thank you as this is a bit confusing to me as it will be my first ever transaction.
Good advice! What about VOO?
I like VOO!
Hello your really good at explaining each stock, and I am going to buy some of these with some more research should I be worried about the war going on in Ukraine?
Thanks Henry!
There’s always something that could make us worry/not invest and Ukraine is just one of them. What you do with that info is up to you
🌵 do you think it’s better to invest in ETF because the expense ratio is cheaper?
🌵🙌
If it’s the essentially identical, lower fees mean more money for you! But it’s probably a small difference
I have all those fund but the Fidelity “version” of them. I guess that’s ok?
Yeah that’s great!
fidelity has the total market index fund (fskax) but they also the more famous Contrafund. These two invest in basically the same large cap stocks but contrafund fee percentage is much higher.
Cactus Cooler is an awesome drink! Thanks for this info.... added them to my list for long term investment.
Thanks Mike!
🌵!!!! Thanks for the info Sr! More people need to realize how important it is to save!
🌵🙌🙌
Great video! I think I’m going to go have a cactus cooler now.
Mmmm 🌵
I like VBTLX, VBIAX, VGIAX, VFIAX and VTSAX as a 5 fund combo.
👍
🌵🌵 are your investments in M1 and acorn no other apps?
I use a bunch of different ones to test them out and make videos but most of our money is tied up in our 401k's which are 2 other investment companies, our IRA's with Vanguard, and M1.
Nothing from Fidelity?
They have good options too!
I really liked this video because i was taking notes for my gf to explain to her all these different types of ETFs so she can start investing. also i like arizona deserts 🌵
Heyooo! That’s awesome Tumi
Can you find 5 jndex fund for uk invester.
You don’t want to invest in American funds?
🌵Thank you!
🌵🙌
VTI AND QQQ 🚀
🚀🚀🚀🧈
Any similar ones for European citizens?
Do you need to water your cactus?
🙌🌵 Probs not!
New subbie thanks for sharing peace and love ❤️ 🙏🏾✝️
Thanks for an informative and easy to understand video! Will need to have my kids watch this video!! 😊🌵
Thank you for the kind comment! 🌵🚀

quick question. in theory, If the US dollar collapses wouldn't the companies just be bought out by other countries and then continue on Their trajectory. I realize this is just theory but would love your opinion @brendan even
If this is true would it save them from collapsing into a cactus pit ?
I have no idea what happens if a currency “collapses”. Do you mean if it falls in value to nearly zero?
Do you recommend investing in these index funds every month? 🌵

Hey I'm just starting these index funds are still good this vid is 5 months old
I don't think thing change that fast, but also this whole video is just my opinion!
Oh man, deciding which companies to invest in can be a prickly process 🌵. I'm glad to learn that there are ETFs that focus on ethics and diversity. Maybe you can do another video to highlight more of those ETFs, like SHE or NACP, that focus on equality, environment, or social responsibility.
That is not a bad idea Nathan, thanks!
(Always appreciate your secret comment puns!)

My Cactus, 🌵, is better at investing than I am. Do you do any day time trading? If so, do you have a favorite day time platform?
Ha! I hope it’s not! No day trading is far too expensive for me, I don’t have that much money to lose!
@@BrendanEvan;) well thanks to you I will beat my Catcus. I am sure of it. I have been watching your videos since last night. Waiting for my credit union account to sync with M1.

Wait, you want to invest in "moral" companies and the majority of these funds you recommend contains "Alphabet/Google" . This is one of the worst companies as far as being "moral". Time to reconsider your barometer.
Yeah it’s definitely not my barometer. A third party called MSCI sets and measures the standards. If you’d like to know more, here’s a link: www.msci.com/our-solutions/esg-investing/esg-ratings
Thanks for watching!!!
Lol I noticed this as well. Some of the most notoriously unethical super-corporations hide behind diversity quotas to try and launder their public image. Unfortunately this ruse works quite effectively on most people

I’ve heard other people express similar feelings toward ESG stuff. It sounds like a great video to make actually, explaining why some people hate it.
- What makes you not like ESG
- What sources have you come across explaining why it’s bad?
- Anything else you have seen or heard around ESG negatives?
