I grew up on VJTI campus next to Parsee Colony. My heartfelt homage to the amazing contribution of arrangers like Sebastian D’Souza, Dattaram, and so many others covered here and in later parts. When I am alone or working or half asleep, these tunes and interludes and orchestra plays in my mind. I think without this music, life would not have been worth living!! I would like to remember S. Hazarasingh who’s musicality was so immaculate that his electric guitar played in O Duniya ke Rakhwale, in a purely classical film like Baiju Bawara under a traditional music director like Naushad. I heard him live many times in my childhood.
Truly loved your humble tribute to the arrangers, who were the real "Gods of Glorius Hindi Film Music" from the 1950s to the 70s. Please make more of such documentaries. They all (arrangers) deserve much more. Many many grateful thanks Irfan bhai, RSTV... God bless!
music directors have robbed the credits of music arrangers shame and after watching this documentary now i understood why old music was so different and beautiful compare to new music. respect and music arrangers should get equal credits as music directors
Shankar and Jaikishan both were `complete' composers in that they composed all music of their songs themselves: i.e. song tunes, preludes, interludes and postludes. Of course, neither Shankar nor Jaikishan knew to read or write western notations. So what? That was done by Sebastian for them who used to write in notation form all music composed by Shankar and Jaikishan. After that, it was Sebastian's job to distribute notations to all musicians, get the written music rehearsed by all of them and then conduct the orchestra according to the music composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. Moreover, both Sebastian and Dattaram were `Assistants' to SJ - not their `arrangers' ( in the sense this word is used in the context of today's' music directors for whom the so-called arrangers compose preludes, interludes and postludes!). Having said this, the importance and contribution of both Sebastian and Dattaram in reference to SJ's music and that of `arrangers` in general for other music-directors, can not be denied. But in the enthusiasm (or over-enthusiasm?) to do so, do not degrade the work of Shankar-Jaikishan-there was no one like them, neither there ever will be another like them!
Zabardast program, zabardast introduction to the unknowns of our industry who made us like and love these songs. Aap ne bahut bada kaam kiya is khoj aur is mission ke saath
Those so called music directors have NEVER given any kind of credit or recognition to the WONDERFUL MUSIC ARRANGER. I always wonder how the background music with very minor but necessary music piece is arranged so accurately in the song. i.e. "pyar hua ikarar hua" the slim flute played rapidly and many more songs. To ALL MUSIC ARRANGER: You were just wonderful!
Fantastic information about music arrangers & their music arrangements which further added so much of richness and feeling to songs composed by great music composers. Their contribution for enhancing the value of those great songs that have enriched our lives can never be undermined.
i have b come emotional:( missing the lost era, i never seen old era but i csn feel and smell strongly, im glad to have such precious treasure of golden era music, and thank full to all musicians, singers, music directors, arrangers for giving us such spritual unforgetable melodys , thay all will b alive in our hearts,
Amazing research, splendid impact of Goan Churches on Indian Movie Music. Dear Irfan, special thanks to you for giving all the air time to the guests on this episode. Shukriya !! Others should learn from you.
Thanks to all those Goan Legends. Because of them Hindi Film music is memorable. Without proper arrangements song will be like a human being without clothes
Always wondered who are these Great musicians who play the myriad instruments harmoniously to a pattern on the composer's melody/tune .. Sebastian , Gonsalves , Dattaram , D'souza were a few of the top notch .. Thanks to RSTV who went in search of these musicians .. arrangers if you must and gave them a wider recogntion..Fans owe their thanks and delight to them too.. many thanks...
Kahate hai "Naye 9 din aur purana 100 din". In Ustadoon ka kaam 100 saal hazaar saal rahega. Aaj ka music kab aata hai aur kab chala jata ? Kissi maloom hai. An excellent documentary on Indian music and contribution of Goa. Raj
Wow...what insight. Without taking away anything away from the composer, these arrangers were the REAL heroes of all those immortal melodies. I salute them and the musicians who MADE it happen.
Thanks R S T V . I wd like to salute to all Goa Music arrangers . They are the main heros behind the screen. Thanks a lot for uploading this video.Once again waiting for next video.
Hats off to these talented people who have always remained in anonymity. Sheer hardwork and passion just going unrecognised is really heart breaking...
This is very informative and thoroughly enjoyable clips. Wow the talent is amazing. Sad to note that these talented Musicians and Music Arrangers never received any recognition.
Great documentary, This shows the music arrangers were the unsung heros' . So much talent went into composing these songs, no wonder they will last forever.
bohot hi khubsurat program aapne bohot accha kaam kiya he music k piche aam janta ko sirf composer ka hi naam pata he aur unhe hi credit diya jata he lekin ye sahi nahi he aapki is approach se awareness badhegi
I see millions of award function and the usual suspects always get award. But none of these award functions have a category to appreciate and award Music Arrangement. For all these years this was an unknown and under appreciated fact. Because only music directors and singer get all the credit.
Thanks RSTV These type of programmes should be transmitted on other TVs channels so that the people in UK and other countries can watch and appreciate this valuable info
I have always wondered how a music director could look after so much details.Clearly they are the ones who creat the mood and the entire climate of a number. Thanks for loading.
Indian film music ROCKS!! I don't think any other music platform has been able to seamlessly integrate so many instruments and styles to render such an incredible number of melodies.
thanks rajyasabha tv for acquainted with the reality of indian music & the work of arranger really they were the real players who beautified the songs may be of naushad or anyone else
Such wonderfully and immaculately researched reports one can not expect from none other channel than RAJYASABHA TV.Kudos to Irfan Bhai for this excellent work. Please keep it up.
I watched the Part 2 of the series, indeed well researched and emotional account of Jewels of Golden Indian Musical Era. Very emotional to see the individual lives completing it's full circle... Passionate musical youth, now old Grand parents but retaining same youthful & still passionate for good music.. God bless them all... 👍
Thanks for briefing us in detail about great musicians of our Bollywood films. Without this common person like me would never have known actual people behind the great names of Bollywood composers.
Very well researched report. Brings home the reality that Music Arrangers are the backbone and due credits have not been given to them. Hats off to this Tribe
Behind a successful song is arranger but they go unknown. The whole credit goes to the singer & music director. Thats pity, they too should be given credit !!
Rajya Sabha TV along with FTTI and maybe Sangeet Natak Akademi together should felicitate them.....the special reports are indeed praiseworthy...WHY FILM INDUSTRY DOES NOT HONOUR THEM PUBLICLY AND CREATE A FUND / CORPUS TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO THE NEEDY?......THEY EARN CRORES....BUT RARELY SHARE....VERY SORRY STATE OF AFFAIRS....
Had no clue that there was someone called musical arranger...wow...I feel so bad that there are so many behind-the-scences talented individuals contributing to the songs and never got any credit. And in some ways the magic is gone...now I know Santa doesnt exist.
For the first time ever, someone tried to give their due to the music arrangers. The only problem is that this video has been edited very poorly. The music added in the background and in between is so loud that it is becoming a noise.
It is OK,Who had an interest in Hindi Film Music is aware about this. It should have dealt with more detail, with a live example of OOld Hindi Film Music.
Thx. a lot for the information reg. Music Arrangers and Musicians. But one thing I would like to ask you how the Music Directors approached these people?
credit must go to people of goa always wondered where the western influence come from happy to know this love goa ...i always thought it was Anglo Indian influence

This is very enlightening. I am ashamed to admit that I didn't know anything about arrangers and musicians.
For a layman, arranger is something new n after this video, it is absolutely correct to say that it is their untold story n they deserve applause 👏
Truly loved your humble tribute to the arrangers, who were the real "Gods of Glorius Hindi Film Music" from the 1950s to the 70s.

Wonderful report. Thank you Rajya Sabha TV.
India should give more recognition to the Goan musicians - present and past
One of the best documentary I've ever seen. Adorable

Behind a successful song is arranger but they go unknown. The whole credit goes to the singer & music director. Thats pity, they too should be given credit !!
There are so much to learn for us from these valuable documentaries.
Some composers were arrangers too, Jaidev, Salil Chowdhury, Vanraj Bhatia, Bhasker Chandawarkar...etc
I had always wondered about how the mesmerizing "filler" music is integrated into a song until watching this story from Irfan.
Musicians and arrangers have to be given a lot of credit for the success of the songs.
