- City of Genoa, Italy - top sites to see and visit in Genoa, top attractions in Genoa, Italy. Let's go lose ourselves in the mediaeval streets and traditional old workshops of the historic city of Genoa (Genova) in Italy.
Genoa is one of the largest in Europe, Genoa's historic centre unwinds in an intricate maze of alleyways (caruggi) that open unexpectedly onto small squares; the soul of Genoa lives here in these alleyways, where smells, tastes, and cultures have combined throughout history.
In the narrow spaces of Genoa, tucked away between the hills and the sea, the pride of wealthy Genoese merchants, indomitable leaders of the Republic, had beautiful mansions built, in which works of art have been collected and preserved for centuries and are visible to this day in several house-museums.
In the centre of Genoa, where time seems to have stood still, noble palaces and splendid churches alternate with historic shops that have been in operation for over 100 years, where local specialities are still prepared according to ancient recipes and handmade objects are crafted with timeless skill.

Fabulous Italy! Another wonderful video. Beautiful historic buildings, a pity they are full of graffiti.
Thank you for your comments. I really dislike graffiti... as you can tell from this video...
Big cities in Italy don't come any better than Genoa. Absolutely the best in my view.
was there last September again from Gold Coast. I could live hear in a heart beat
Thank you for viewing my videos!!
i lived in Genoa for 20 years,is the most underrated city in Italy,it never stop surprise me and i miss it a lot!
Hello, thank you for your comments!!
Genova is also famous (like Naples) for its lifts and funiculars. Recently they were also free. It's a very nice way to see all the town from a 'different point of view' and discover places like the Peralto Park or Spianata Castelletto that was made just to have a bird eye view of the center of the town (well not only the center because from there you can see Portofino and Savona) :)
Hello, thank you for this information! 👍👍👍
Shame that nobody knows STAGLIENO cemetery that is comparable to the Paris`one !!! The super narrow streets of the mediaeval centre were built lake that for defence purpose, you wouldn`t walk there with things... falling on you... Thank you for sharing, nice tour!
Vic does such a great job in this gorgeous city. My favourite Vic video. What i love about Genoa is the mix of earthy areas and gorgeous architecture. My favourite big city in Genoa
Hi Anne, thank you for your wonderful comments!!
Thank you very much Vic! Thanks for the advice on where to go and where NOT to go. Much appreciated.
Hello, thank you for watching my videos!!
I remembered that video of yours when I recently spent a few days in Genoa and while I generally like your view on things I found it somewhat odd that you describe the small lanes of the old city as particularly dangerous. True, that the lanes next the waterfront are the hangout of many African immigrants in difficult life conditions but at the same time you see frail old ladies walking their dogs late at night. And the vast rest of the old city boasts a number of hidden restaurants, shops and workshops not even remotely dangerous,
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
Vzdy davala naozaj skvele inspiracie ta GENOVEVA 😊
Ahoj, ďakujem, že pozeráš moje videá!! 😊😊😊
I was been last summer in Genova and i have only bad experiences.Lots of prostitution on street , drugs and many dangerous people. Also a lots of rubbish on the street.I was disappointed😥
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
Excellent commentary, I wish I had watched your video before my travel to Genoa. I regret to say I was adventurous and walked through the streets of Genoa to explore and I truly got an experience. I went through an alley and I suddenly thought I had found the court of miracles in Italy. Poverty everywhere, and I´ve been to poor streets before but the air just felt depressing there. But I guess it was expected from an old city like Genoa. I still enjoyed it so much, specially the Maritime Museum and the Palazzo Reale, the city just felt like a travel in time even my hotel looked straight out of the 40s´.
Hi Melissa, thank you for your comments and I am so glad that you agree with the contents of my video!!
I’ll love to visit Genoa one day. My great grandmother was from Genova
I hope you can make it there one day, thank you for viewing my videos!
Thanks so much for the video! It was very interesting to see!
Vic, thanks for the wonderful tour. Italy is the only place, outside of the states, that I have wanted to visit. It was disclosed to me that my great grandfather x 6, Mark Anthony, was originally from Genoa Italy. Thanks again for the tour!
Glad you enjoyed it!
hi vic, great video my friend from genova italy we even new the house of cristofer colombus, real nice and beautiful city, regards.
Hi Eddy, thank you for your comments!
Very nice video Vic, Genova is one of the cities in Italy I hope to visit next year. Some very wise advice about the areas to avoid, but that shouldn't stop people visiting the best bits.
Thank you for your comments!
I just like the Italian Renaissance buildings and such so nice
Thank you for viewing my videos!!
Gorgeous city. So earthy and non tourist like
Hi Anne, thank you for your comments.
I was amused by Genoa. There are still some parts of the old wall. To me the ancient parts are truly amusing. The city definitely has a strange vibe to it. It is vibrant but there is something surreal about it.
Hi Allen, thank you for your comments!!
You miss the Lanterna di Genova! It's our symbol!
I know, I know.. It was a little too far to walk to..

Thank you for viewing my videos and for your wonderful comments!!
Beautiful video
And beautiful man
Thank you!
LOL, I strongly recommend to loose yourself in Genovas tiny lane ways and you will discover the true sights. I've been there a hundred times, literally everywhere, and never found a horrible neighbourhood. Never. Maybe people find some streets strange looking, because they are not used to the extremely narrow lanes - packed with alien views, Renaissance building, stunning details, awesome little shops and cafés. Exactly this alien world of an urban labyrinth makes Genova one of the most incredible and fascinating cities in the world. So: go a couple of times to right and to the left, discover tiny hidden piazzas, meet friendly prostitutes showing you the way to go without any money or get amused by some of the funniest urban gardening constructions - and fall in ❤️ with Genova.
Ok, thank you! 👍👍👍
Vic, with this video you made me love Genova , my native town, which i didnt love very much
Happy to hear that!
I live in Genova for the best part of my life (and I'm not young) and I work in palazzo Podestà or Nicolosio Lomellino (the one at 17:50) And you made a great work in give to a traveler an idea of what is Genova. The only criticism I can make is that you MUST lose youself in the "caruggi", the small alleys that form the center of the city. At least in the "greatest" ones , like those near piazza delle vigne o Campetto. Yes, there are prostitutes, and yes, maybe some pusher too, but side by side with more "regular" citizen and workers. And they are not very clean, but the heart of Genova is there.
Ok, thank you for your comments!
I want to spend some positive and corrective observation that You might have said it wrong.
In the old town the medieval alleys or "vicoli" represents actually the beauty of the city even though they seem dangerous or degraded places so in my opinion they should be visited after planning the route obviously (the only place to avoid is the area around Vico di Croce Bianca). And the reason why you saw less tourist in Genoas "centro storico" is because most of them are in the seashore .... ;-)
Great, and well done video....keep it up!!!
Thank you for viewing my videos!
Ben tornato in Italia ,Vic!
Torna alla bella Italia !!
I really like your videos. very good content! greetings from Finland!
Hei my friend, thank you for your comments!!
Genova is fantastik, ...............
Hello and thank you for viewing my videos!!
Italy has the most beautiful architecture in the world, I think.
True, along with Austria, Germany and Switzerland..
sometimes, my city have some many hidden treasures that you need someone from there to drive in the visit. For example in the San Lorenzo Cathedral you not see a warship shell fired in the second world war, that hit the cathedral, and is still there unexploded, at the border of the "caruggi" the old town, are few "talking stones": a stone at the corner of a building that have some word writed on.. many from the second world war, in english with the write: All Allied Troops Stop Here!, many of the old town is not dangerous as you say but i understand that is strange to see alone for the first time. Sometimes things are funny.. the ancient Palazzo San Giorgio that have at his side a underground station, perfectly mixing new and old..
Hello, thank you for your comments and for watching my videos!! 👍👍👍
I have only been to Venice and Barcelona, as far as it concerns Mediterranean port cities. However, Genova and Napoli, that I have only seen in videos, look much like Barcelona and Venice. Thanks for the tour Vic.

Hello, thank you for your comments!!
Thanks for your report and good advice. As your report was issued 2 years ago, do you know if security and dirt issues have been fixed since then? We plan to visit Cinque Terre next spring and wonder if it's worth staying one or two days in Genoa?
Sorry, I am not sure what the situation is like today.. Someone wrote to me telling me that the area has been 'cleaned up' and criticized me for what I was saying on this video, but, when I was there, the area was exactly as I reported it..
@@VicStefanu Thx for your reply. And damn with the critics, you've related your view and feelings and it matters!
@@NewG101 Thank you!
Grazie mille Vic for sharing the video. Italy looks so Bellissimo. I would like to ask ? In your opinion or knowledge? What is the average cost of living there in Genoa? Or Bari is housing equal for the most part in Italy ? Grazie and Buona Pasqua. Ciao
Hi Vincent, I am not sure about the price or cost of living in Genoa, sorry.. I was just a tourist..

Hello and thank you for viewing my videos!!
for almost 900 years. And it had financed half of the courts of all Europe. Then the world changed...compared to others it became small....even just for our huge credits...we were too uncomfortable and they made us disappear. From almost 160 years we are under illegal occupation of the italian state.
sir i need Europe visa sir
Vic . I am asking you to take this video off. I am greedy and want this city to myself.
Few tourists make this gorgeous city the best.
lol.. It has been viewed almost 50,000 times, so I think I will keep it on my channel for a while longer..
I thought so. Love your vids Vic. "life is not a rehearsal"
Genova is just not that dangerous.
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍

Also regarding the not so good neighborhoods? Is there a mafia presence there ??
I am not sure about that....
Mafia is everywhere. But in cities like Genova you won't have problems
why does he sound out of breath the entire video?
Problem corrected.. thank you for your concern..
So nice, and you are beautiful jajaja
