I don't know why they are worried about hurricane season. I've lived through it, they don't pay out, you have to fight them for every penny and they have lots of lawyers on tap.
I sold my Condo and bought new single-family home over 7-10 miles from the ocean. My insurance cost for this year is 1278. If it goes above 3000, I will drop wind. My house is built to be able to withstand 160MPH winds. That has a remote chance of happening nearly 10 miles from the ocean. It is all CBS construction with impact glass.
My home in Brandon fl…east of Tampa…over 25 miles from the coast…had my insurance increase from 3k to 5800. How the hell is yours only 1278? I also own outright and cancelled wind aas well as hail coverage (they forced the latter) now I’m at 980$ a year
Citizens is nearly violating the law with the intentional confusion...double triple depopulation....getting smart with the maneuvers...trying to assess addional premium for "non-primary" residents policy but not checking for it but requiring customers to fill out idiotic forms to prove it...on top of the evident proof you provide...it get annoying as a agent...and I feel sorry for the customers...
I live in Kissimmee. We bought our home in 2012 and started at 2k a year, last year we were dropped and put with Slide insurance and they pushed the rates from 9k to 13.5k!!!!!! We have never ever made a claim. We dropped them and went with Citizens last October and it dropped to 3.5k again. Just got a call today saying I needed to pick a new policy or something or they would pick it for me. I paid in full for it and they are already forcing me to pick a new policy??? I want out of Florida but my wife won't leave her family.
Florida is sinking into the ocean the insurance company sees the scientific data so they’re all jumping ship but the politicians are watching Fox News telling them it’s all a hoax. Leave Florida asap because I fear in a few years no one will want to buy a house in Florida and those who have a house will be stuck there.
I got bad news Chris, the insurance hikes are happening outside of Florida too. Here in Colorado, the insurance companies are dropping people in the foothills like flies.
I'm 48 years old. Lived in new Orleans for 42 of those. Never lost a dwelling from a hurricane. Was there for Katrina and Ida. Never even had water in my house.
Full timer in an RV. I have stayed in Florida 9 winters over the years, as well as Alabama, Texas and California. This is the last winter I will stay in Florida. It is too expensive for normal folks. And that is without the insanity of Insurance and HOAs, directly. I bought a deeded lot in an RV Park in Michigan for the summers where my sons spends his time now. $15,000. Taxes are around $500 a year and HOA is $480 a year. The cheapest lot I could find in Florida and that in the north is $57,000, with $ $1200 in taxes and $3400 HOA per year. That is insane. Most lots farther south run around $160,000 to $220,000 with high taxes and HOA fees. I am out. Done. Finished, Gone.
If can self insure because mortgage paid off and hurricane completely destroys the house then can just move away and still own the lot and this justifies property tax lowering from the county since no longer a structure there. However if land highly valued and not homesteaded prior to price run ups then still have to pay some hefty property tax. I missed a lot of profits on 2 properties I owned there since 2000 and 2003 which I sold in 2017 and 2013 when I moved to Texas in 2014 and also during the 2008 GFC however I so glad I don't have to worry about insurance so no regrets. At least now I not have to worry about being negative equity and finding insurance. USAA dropped one of my policies all the way back in 2005 and was placed on Citizens back then!
I'm in the lake county area away from the ocean i have progressive my renewal is due they give me a quote 4,800 i call immediately going from 2,600 they told me im a lucky one they are not writing new policies. My roof was replace in 2017 from hurricane irma the insurance market is crazy expensive right now.
Im getting a ton of those folks...even new homes are getting dropped...the good news is those folks can often find private non-Citizens insurance on the market. There is hope for the grand majority of us...
Don't worry about the high cost of Florida!! Remember what your real estate agent said when he/she sold you your home. You're not only buying a great home but you're buying a "LIFESTYLE!!"
I saw your last video "Getting out of Florida" Going to move to Washington state where I live . Here the Property taxes are extremely high if you live on a lake $22,000 per year. Labor costs High. I pay my men carpenters $50----$80 per hour. I live in a small town 25 mi east of Seattle Fall City..... Lowest price house here is 1.2 million. Cheapest piece of buildable land near my town is $300. I own a 1 acre piece of land in Jackson county fl with water power and a concrete foundation on it ready to build. my taxes there are $110 per year. This community has no HOA and have acreage around the homes. Very nice people live there. I guess there are pluses and minuses any place you live......
We got our renewal notice from Olympus on our 2018 built home in food zone X (property was built three feet higher above flood zone) and it was 10500. Luckily we already had our home on the market and we actually close today. The first insurance quote we got on our new home of similar value in NC was 750 dollars a year. Less than what we we were paying a month in FL. Taxes will be about a 5th of what the new buyers will be paying and a third of what we were paying. We could afford to stay in FL but why? It’s just going to get worse. With increased crime and congestion it’s no longer worth it. So many other places to live that are more stable and have higher quality of life for a lower price. State legislature needs to get their head out of the sand and quit lying about crime homeless and insurance situation and actually start solving it instead of persecuting drag queens women and free speech! I still have family in the state and I was born in FL. It’s painful to watch what is happening, but I am happy I got out.
Insurance is just a modern day "protection racket" working together with Wallstreet insurance companies will provide the inventory for corporate buyers to buy up homes. The plan is working well, you will own nothing and be happy
Unfortunately, it hurts when people fall back to reality. People shouldn’t continue to build the same in an area prone to such occurrences. The risk and probability should be disclosed upon sale.
Come on people, it's a business and a goal of a business is to make money just like the businesses you work for . What do you expect?? Get into an auto accident every year and you will see your premiums double too.
Yeah but the people who have never been in accident will have to pay too. Florida is sinking the insurance companies have seen the scientific data and decided to cut their losses the people who think the climate stuff is a hoax will be left a few years from now wishing they would’ve left earlier.

What is the solution? You can self insure, or risk having no insurance. People can't sell. Abandonment is the last option. Florida will be a ghost state.
I pay $330 for car insurance on a new Mazda 2 hatchback, which is a perfect car for here on Cebu island. $12/year for my motorcycle. No apartment insurance, no health insurance. Easy to self insure here. I moved here in 2016 from Boca Raton and I never looked back.
