    I took two creative writing courses in college where people who were learning to write critiqued other people who were learning to write and it was like the blind leading the blind. We were not taught structure or anything substantial about writing. It was a major waste of time.

    This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on what it is to be a modern poet. I’ve been struggling for a while now with imposter syndrome after graduating with a Creative Writing degree. There’s all this pressure to make something of myself, but in my soul, what I am is a poet. So this has helped me feel more confident about the nature of my being.

Your external contributions will flow out of you when the time is right.

    I loved this video, it was inspirational for sure. I have been making poetry videos here on YT for 2 years, 1 per week, and they usually get about 10 impressions per day. No one finds my channel and even when I search original poem or poetry on an incognito tab I never find even one of my videos In the top 150 results even though I have over 120 videos. I feel as if I have been shadowbanned from the beginning and now I'm in a hole that's too deep to climb out of. Meanwhile, a channel called Luna Poems has over 100k subscribers, only a dozen videos, and hasn't posted in over a year and yet her videos still come up at the top of the results. What has gone so terribly wrong with the YT algorithm?

    • @WriteConscious
      @WriteConscious  Год назад +5

      Brotha. I feel you. I released 150 videos of this quality and got 500 subscribers over 3 years lol. I had the same feelings. But, I had to tell myself I needed to up the quality and quantity of my work and I'd make something happen. Once I focused on that I've gotten 2.5k subs in 7 months. Also, the poetry market is not big. Nothing is wrong with you or the algorithm, it's just that people like superficial poetry. You're going to have to build a literary audience in a different way than point them to your work. Sucks, but it is what it is!

    • @FFTS

      @@WriteConscious Thank you so much for your reply... what you say sounds true and makes sense (other than the fact that even when I search for "original poem" my videos don't exist). I am taking a little break, maybe a big break. I'm glad I made the videos regardless, and that I got permission from 7 other great writers to feature their poems. I wish they had gotten more exposure, it is much deserved.

      You have to think also about how you market yourself and where you do it. Do you play any online game with a chat room and repeat players? Write little poems there. Drop a few lines. If people like you're writing, they'll start to know and look forward to it, once that happens, "oh by the way....and please tell a friend if you like it". Forest fires often start from a single spark. Get creative with where you toss the matches.

    Well said. Selling books is all about marketing. Instapoets are the absolute worst poets but have the absolute best marketing teams. Iv self published four books in different genre's and the one that sold the most I wrote in one day but marketed heavily. I poured my soul into my poetry book for a year, published with zero marketing and have probably sold 100 copies, mostly on kindle.

      @@WriteConscious the only reason it bothers me is because upcoming writers have no chance when the first ten pages on Amazon or B&N are paid spots taken up by posers. Its how art dies.

    • @WriteConscious
      @WriteConscious  Год назад +3

      I agree. Amazon killed literature. But, it's killed a lot of industries. Yet, we are the only one whose constituency is made of educated individuals who knows it's wrong lol. The running short industry (or whatever) going almost exclusively on Amazon killed some small-time running short companies. But, probably no running short entrepreneurs care about shorts like how we care about books 😂 They can go make money in another way. I can't transition from an artist to an accountant without dying inside. If anyone can push back against the machine it's us.

    Damn. You just fired me the hell up.
    I used to have a mixed poetry/opinion Instagram, and built it up to 250 followers and maybe 30 engaged people. Then covid happened, I got shadowed, and ended up deleting the account at the beginning of the year because it felt like noone gave a crap and I lost all my traction. It really sucked, and I've been feeling lost and down all year.
    But now I have something to shoot for, some way out of wage slave hell if I dedicate myself to the craft. I still maintain a primordial dislike of my poetry, but I can see definite improvement (even tho I'm a dirty, dirty solecist). It may also stem from my dislike of most poetry; at this point I read the metaphysical poets maybe once a month if I'm feeling up to it.
    Anyways, enough digression.
    Imma go conquer the world with my crappy manuscript. Peace, and eternal thanks ✌️

  • @amandavanheerden7980
    @amandavanheerden7980 11 месяцев назад +1

    Won't you please explain to those contemplating writing poetry the huge difference between classic poetry, musical lyrics and simple rhyme. Also that poetry has NOTHING to do with politics. It has everything to do with a refined writing talent, a reasonable understanding of literature (elements of great poetry) and an intense love of beauty.
    If someone writes free style poetry - what Robert Frost referred to as 'playing tennis with the net down" - at least incorporate an awesome message. Love David Whyte and Mary Oliver's work because their breathtaking poetry is refined, loaded with deep meaning, insight and wisdom. People need to be taught the difference between simplistic rhyme like Rapi Kaur's poor efforts (woke appeal) and actual poetry such as the awesome work from the poets mentioned. Personally I love the Romantics. They remain unequalled to this day and my loadstar for writing poetry. Thank you for sharing your experience.

    • @WriteConscious
      @WriteConscious  11 месяцев назад

      Exactly. Right now there is a massive ignorance debt happening in the poetry community. Most people think poetry is rhyming or like Rupi Kaur. But, they're also too dumb and disconnected from nature, God, and the pantheon of emotions which enable one to understand the Romantics. Most people who have the ability to write like that don't publish, are complacent in a professor job, or don't know how to market and promote themselves. So, there has to be a group of poets to make this happen or it will only get worse.

    • @amandavanheerden7980
      @amandavanheerden7980 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@WriteConscious Hi thank you so much for your response.
      I absolutely agree - there should be a massive kick back by literary poets against the shallow nonsense publishers are feeding the public. Problem is the public was far better educated during the 1800's. People appreciated the beauty of complex thinking. Today thinking/learning is way too much effort due to the massive dumb down that happened over the past 50 years or more. My background is in literature, drama, music and philosophy.
      I'm working on a live show featuring classic poetry, but in South Africa where I live, I'll be lucky if I get 10 - 20 people attending - even at poetry and book festivals.
      But...we must never give up. The human heart naturally flowers in the presence of beauty.
      Wishing you success. Namaste.

    I like you and your channel and was excited with the content and liked your initial ideas presented, but then you asked an UNPUBLISHED poet to run poetry courses. You're missing the point, Jackson. Most poets don't want to run poetry workshops or courses, all they want is people buying their poetry collections, either directly as self-published poets or the traditional way. I want to be a poet and not a teacher. I want to sell books and not courses. And who would buy a course run by an unpublished poet? I wouldn't.
    Also, you would need two mailing lists: one for READERS who like to read poetry, but are not writing poetry, and another for POETS or wannabe poets who want to learn to write poetry.
    The guy in your example is already an established poet with a ton of sales, reviews, and social proof, so of course he can do speaking gigs, workshops and online courses because people will pay for his expertise.
    Who here would buy a course from an unpublished wannabe?

    Calculating it the way you did obscured it a bit, but what you actually said was: get a thousand true fans who will each pay you a thousand dollars. That's just ridiculous. Of course, the people taking your courses don't have to be the same 1000 people, but that's still a much higher expectation than you're making it out to be. Plus, using terms like "objective value" with regards to works of poetry is absurd. Poetry is inherently subjective, and it should be.
    I agree with much of the message of the video. But be serious.
