    Old Optiplex BIOSes are known to hate modern graphics card. It used to be the AMD R9s and RX-470/480 cards, and apparently they've lost patience with NVIDIA now, too. The safest bet for a typical Sandy/Ivy Gamerplex conversion is an NVIDIA card, Pascal or earlier. Anything newer could be hit or miss.

      It doesn’t make sense to pair modern GPU’s with those old Optiplex’s anyway though. Not just compatibility but, bottlenecking the GPU performance. I say 2060 super up to the upcoming 40 series makes no sense.

    Were both your sandy bridge systems using xeon processors? It might be a solution to try, as those boards "technically" weren't meant to house xeon CPUs as those were intended to be enterprise chips. Maybe there's something missing in the microcode that doesn't allow the xeons to initiate the GPU? Personally, I'd try with it an i5 2400 just to make sure that wasn't the issue.

    I always wanted to get an optiplex pc, since here in Greenland, trying to build my own pc is not easy as just order parts and done with it. Many online retailers don't send to Greenland, and we don't have Microcenter or other huge stores about pc-parts in the country. Ordering from online, shipping cost always around $60-75, and could take up to 2-4 weeks to arrive, if we're lucky with weather.

    Few suggestions, first update the BIOS on those Dell motherboards to the most recent version available, which appears to be version A24 from 2018. Under Important Info on the BIOS page it shows that multiple sequential updates may be needed for versions prior to A10 and A4. Settings related to UEFI/legacy boot mode and CSM can have an impact here, but note this can also cause windows not to boot depending which mode it was installed under.
    The other thing to try is to remove the "Dell factor" from this completely, pull the 2nd gen CPU and ram and find a used 60 series board (such as Z68) to drop them in and test with (update to latest bios here too).
    Last thing to note going forward is that Ivy Bridge (3570K/3770K) is the first gen to support PCI-E 3.0 (with a 70 series board such as Z77). Best to stick to that or Haswell (4670K/4770K) or Devils Canyon (4690K/4790K) going forward for the DDR3 stuff.

    • @AznMikey
      @AznMikey 2 года назад +4

      The point of the Video was to 'Upgrade' a Dell Pc. If he removed the Motherboard for another one, it would defeat the purpose. The other reason is so that other people that are trying to upgrade a Dell will know that a Rtx 3050 didn't work in this situation... Like he said, most ppl won't have extra hardware to swap and see what is the problem.
      I understand that he asked for solutions as well but I'm pretty sure he meant a way for the RTX 3050 to work with the Dell. (Motherboard and Processor)
      Edit: Like he said, It's most likely the Pcie lane being 2.0. Although it's weird that the 3060ti worked.

    Hi Danny. I bought a RTX 2060 to slap in an Optiplex 7010 and I had the same problem you had. I spent 12 hours adjusting bios settings from legacy to secure boot etc, but I couldn't get it working. The GPU worked in my other PCs including my Optiplex 3020. I tried installing 2 GPUs at the same time, I tried everything. Then I traded out the PSU with an older model that I had and boom. It booted up. The only difference between the 2 power supplies is the old PSU's 6+2 PCIe connector has actual 8 wires that go back to the PSU compared to the new CX600 PSU that has 6 wires and have jumpered the 2 grounds over to the +2 connector. I wonder if this jumper is not compatible with the PCI 2.0 slot??? Because that is the only difference and it now works. Maybe it is just a coincidence, but I am stoked that it finally worked for me, maybe it give it a try.

    Interesting... perhaps I'll have to test the 3050 in my 3020 as well. It's working fine in my 9020 test bench. But I don't think PCIe Gen2 is your problem. The 3020 is also PCIe Gen2 like the x90 series, as is the 3010. The H61 and H81 chipsets are both limited to PCIe Gen2. Were you running the 990 in UEFI mode? I know that can cause problems with some newer GPU's refusing to run in legacy mode. And if you are, the UEFI implementation in those systems is rather buggy.
    I'm kinda' leaning towards a UEFI issue here, but no matter, you should be able to run the tests you want with the 3020 since it's Gen2. You can check in GPU-Z, but it should be running at Gen2x16. Wish I had an 790/990 to test the 3050 in now.

      I think it's possible that in some dell pc's, even if the mobo offers iGPU capability, it may be hard-locked by Dell b/c they included a discrete GPU. I think I've encountered this scenario on some business PC's after I tried removing their GPU to put in other PC's, it was quite a few years back though and going off memory. I don't think I was able to find a Bios/uefi setting that allowed them to work w/o a dGPU.

      @@heyitsdazy I don't have any experience w/newer pre-builts, except an HP my father purchased about a year ago. The older pre-builts I dealt with never included a list of compatible gpu's. If they include this now, that is a very good change imho. Even though I prefer AMD, it seemed like those older PC's I dealt with were generally more friendly to Nvidia GPU's, but I realize now that it was probably a card by card basis depending on its architecture. I think if one is going to upgrade an older pc, it would be best to see if anyone on a forum or YT video successfully paired the card they are considering w/their motherboard before ordering to minimize the frustration. The only thing I know of the 6500XT is that if video editing or live streaming are important, you wanna stay away from it. If you only plan to game, then it will do ok there. Most would choose a 3050 over it I'm sure for those reasons alone as most probably want to at least live stream or plan on getting into content creation/video editing.

    I don't know why this popped up on my feed 1 year later, LOL! I could save you the trouble, the Optiplex and Inspiron BIOS have a lock on the power draw from the PCIE slot. If it draws more than X amount of power it trips the TDP limit and goes into shutdown or boot loops where the lights come on and it just turns back off... It is a "feature" designed to not allow you to upgrade your Dell desktops "for your own safety" (quoted from a Dell employee in the forums). But you can always buy a new model! LOL! I think that is the point right? Can we all agree it's a really horrible practice?
    The newer models no longer have the TDP limit in them, but getting definitive list of which models are affected and which are not is going to be difficult at best.

When it is installed it will randomly cause the system to hard crash to a black screen. Only happens to that card when used with that motherboard. Motherboard works fine with any other gpu.

    some cards don't support legacy vbios , and the sandybrige motherboards don't all support uefi vbioses thus a work around is to pop in 2 gpus so the motherboard reads the vbios off of the legacy card and boot into windows then the rtx card should work , to prevent pci e 2.0 8x speed due to pci e saturation you will need to use a gt 710 with pci e x1 slot or x4 slot if there is a available slot otherwise the only option is software - duet with refind , just look up some info on "Make UEFI Graphics Card work with Legacy BIOS Motherboard"

I have an hp motherboard that has secure boot on it and there's no option to turn it off so it only works with an hd 6570 which it came with in a pre-built system or a gtx 660 ti. Nothing else I've tried works with it. Was wondering if it might be some kind of issue like that. It's a sandy bridge model also. Kinda hurts my heart a little that sandy bridge is going by the wayside because it was such an awesome product stack.

    My first system an AM3+ non-UEFI worked with an rx 470 nitro+ UEFI card until after driver 16.11.5. In 2017, on the ReLive driver when it came out, because AMD implemented a Polaris vBIOS check, my driver failed to accept the card. Had to use a third-party tool, atikmdag-patcher, to patch the driver until when they lifted the check with RX 580

      @mt441 Год назад

      @@muki_x Hi, they removed the check in 2017 when RX 580 was released and it seemed like it was gone since then. The original problem affected anyone with a non-ref. RX 400 card and BIOS back then and in my case when you had a non UEFI motherboard (legacy ROM load attempt * on a card that had UEFI vBIOS).
      But they changed some part of wattman API since fall 2022 and RDNA3 so instead it reads from vBIOS (no SPPT powerplay tables there). I can't test this on a RX to confirm RN, but from user reports on forums, it seems this may affect soft modding and customizing values via API, not sure about custom vBIOS in 2023, if it boots, it may run but AMD is sneaky lately.

    I myself had trouble placing an R9 270 in a few of these older Dell Optiplex and Vostro units I have laying around, but it mostly seemed to work with at least one newer Vostro. At the time, I got a feeling via various forum thread comments that it had to do w/the bios/uefi of the motherboard(s) were incompatible w/the gpu's bios, and that in general, Nvidias were more compatible than AMD cards when it came to likelihood a gpu might work in an older Dell pre-built. Another commenter here I believe seemed to think it might be CSM missing from a motherboard bios. I think it's just an OEM mobo issue. I've been able to add the R9 270 to a Gigabyte X38 that is older than most of the Dell pre-builts that I have.

I expect it's the Dell OEM version of the motherboard.
