I saw this movie in the theater (one of the few times it was shown) during an overnight Horror festival and had a blast. It was perfect for a room full of Horror superfans to just have fun and celebrate the season. If this got a wide release I think we'd have gotten a new horror franchise.
This movie is literally the quite essential Halloween movie because. The movie is literally about everything Halloween all the myth Legends lore and traditions and rules. Without those this movie does not work it would not exist because Halloween is literally the star of the movie in this movie. Halloween is not a background in this movie like other movies. Like prime example John Carpenters Halloween on the audio commentary with John Carpenter. He talks about how it's original name or title was The Babysitter Murders. But when they were discussing the final script they got to talking about how there is hardly any horror movies that take place on Halloween. So they changed the name of the movie from The Babysitter Murders to Halloween. Then Incorporated Halloween elements into the script so in the movie Halloween is a background it's a setting it's not the star of the movie. So Halloween is not about Halloween because that idea works anytime of the year because it's a guy killing babysitters. Now Trick'R Treat only works on Halloween no other day no other month of the year. So Halloween itself is the star of the movie Sam is the embodiment of Halloween. His name is Sam short for Samhain as in the Festival of Samhain as in the original name of Halloween. Before it became All Hallows Eve and eventually Halloween it was the Festival of Samhain. So Sam is the enforcer of the rules of Samhain or Halloween or All Hallows Eve whatever you want to call it. Basically Sam is Halloween in physical form so basically he's. The god of Halloween so to speak hence why he has the powers. On the Shout Factory collector's edition of Trick'R Treat on the bonus features it's writer and director. Michael Dougherty talks about how before this there was no movies about Halloween whare it was the focal point of the movie. Sure you had movies like Halloween and other movies but Halloween was always a background meaning Halloween takes place in the background its a setting its not the focus of the movie. The movie is about something else completely Halloween is just something that's happening. So he created Sam to Be the mascot of Halloween it started out as a short called. Trick 'r Treat Seasons Greetings its on RUclips if you are interested. Then someone approached him to make the movie so he literally made the entire movie about Halloween. All of the rules an traditions an lore and mythology this movie is literally and figuratively the Halloween movie to watch. Because without the rules an traditions an mythology and lore of Halloween this movie doesn't happen. So Halloween is the main focus and the star of the movie. Now since you mentioned the werewolf scene an the principal. In bonus features and things he states that idea came from a simple concept. You see what the principal is doing you think he's the worst monster. Out there until he comes across a worse monster that being the werewolves. The idea is just when you think you see what you think is the Worse monster. Something worse comes out of the dark so you truly don't know what other monsters are out there. Basically the it can't get any worse scenario but okay he's the scariest thing thing out there then you see the werewolfs. That leaves you wondering what else is out there and worse than a werewolf. That was the idea behind that story and scenario.
