The Creative Process and Taking Decisions

- Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
Today I want to give you a little peek into the illustration process. There are so many decisions to make - the creative process IS the decision making. You need to think about many design elements like composition, color palette, lettering and storytelling. The process is different from drawing in your sketchbook because it needs some planning ahead and it often requires a lot of time. Then again, desicion making, color, and composition are all elements that you consider with each sketchbook page you fill. That's why I hope you can pull some inspiration from this video, in which I talk about the decisions and also the moments I got stuck during the process of making an illustration for They Draw And Travel.

Loved this video! Please share more of the illustration process if you do more!! Thanks
You got it!
Seeing and hearing your thought process and watching it all come to life was fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing--I know I will rewatch this many times for inspiration.
First! :) Koosje, thank you for the greatest channel of this kind on YT.
Wow, thanks you so much!
Yes, more please!!
Thanks for sharing your process, I really enjoyed it 🤗🤗🤗
Such a great process. I love that you used reference material because so often we expect ourselves to draw everything from memory rather than allowing ourselves to use reference photos. And tracing first... that was brilliant. Thanks Koosje! Come visit soon!!!
Yes, those high expectations... so true! (and I know I have said those two words many times in response to your comments, alleesha, but hey... you are just so very wise!)
VERY helpful!! Thank you! I love your drawing.
Thank u so much. So helpful and I learned a lot. Huge fan
Watching this before sleep is not good ! It made me feel so excited :-D and wanna test the process. Already saved this video so I can re-watch later. Thank you so much for sharing, it really helps the amateurs/ beginners who also love drawing.
PS. I know about your channel via TDAT as I love mapping :)
This is fantastic Koosje. So much fun can be had using layers when drawing digitally. I loved that sun! (But your finished version looks great even without it. ;-)) The stepping away and coming back after a break with fresh eyes is so important isn't it. And your initial planning too - I always forget to do that! Super useful DTT. Thank you!
I loved the sun too but sometimes you need to ‘kill your darlings’ for the sake of the story and composition. Eventually I took it into another illustration, for ‘My Happy Meal’on They Draw And Cook
Interesting to see and hear how you plan your work. Obviously, first thoughts do not always end up on the final work. Often, second and third thoughts don’t make it either. That is the process and it is sometimes really apparent to people that lack of a good thought process leads to a poor final product. Thanks again for what you do. I enjoyed it and learned from it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic to see your process, thank you so much for sharing 🏖 🌴
This was very helpful to watch you do and to observe your process. Thank you
Thank you for sharing your talents! You’re an amazing artist and teacher
Thank you!
I love it. Great job Koosje!
Thank you!
Thank you Koosje! I have been thinking about digital drawing. It is geat to see what kind of tricks and techniques you use. And inspiring that you use foto's to draw over to.
Glad you feel inspired!
Extremely interesting...loved watching the process. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantasties, jy is baie goed en ek geniet dit so baie.
En dat maakt mij dan weer heel blij!
Love the fish! Can you snorkel there?
Depends on where you go in Thailand :)
Such an inspirational process of a wonderful drawing! Thanks Koosie for sharing it. I enjoyed it thoroughly! I have no pre-knowledge in any types of drawing, because that I cannot get the ratios of any shapes right. but the digital drawing seems so much fun. What kind of software did you use for this drawing?
I use an iPad Pro and the app Procreate.
@@KoosjeKoene thank you so for the reply.
Wow!!!! I've been following you for about 2 years and have learnt so much. I loved this video. I know nothing about digital illustration. I have just been bought an android tablet as a present but have been bewildered by the art apps. What do you use? I know I am a total beginner in this , so it is a bit cheeky to ask as your drawing is BRILLIANT❤
I use procreate, but that is only for Apple devices.
For Android I have heard good things about Autodesk Sketchbook and Adobe Photoshop Sketch. But I don't have any experience with those apps.
Just start by using a free app to discover if you like working digitally, and when you do, you'll also discover what kinds of tools or options you need, and with that you can research other apps if needed.
@@KoosjeKoene thank you Koosje, the free idea is a good one. I'll also look at those you mentioned. Very kind of you to reply ❄❄❄It's snowing here in Scotland, where is Spring!
Mooi hoor! 👍
Dankjewel!
Hi, Koosje, Enjoyed this so much! Could you pls explain to me why you traced those two items? I know that it's easy for you to draw such things....maybe even more quickly than tracing. Thanks, Koosje!
I wanted the vehicles and cart to look 'right'. They basically are icons in this illustration so they need to be recognizable in a blink. If it would have been in my sketchbook, I would have tried to wing it, and do it more freestyle. Also, tracing speeds up the process a lot. Otherwise I would have taken hours just on those vehicles, instead of focusing on the whole.
Take a look at Aleesha's comment, she explains it very well.
It's OK to make it easy on ourselves if that's what the process needs.
I hope this answers your question!
Now is the season of golden mangoes and durian, the fruit of contrast!! smell like a hell while its taste drives you to the heaven, is coming soon. Thai people also miss you.
When I visited Thailand with a friend who had never been there and I bought her mango, she tasted it and I saw by the look in her eyes it totally changed her whole perception of fruit. Soooo good! She didn't dare to taste durian though. And well, yes it is... challenging haha
