    OMG! An honest man. How refreshing!
    On RUclips, there is BS everywhere: “Learn the fretboard in one hour!”, “Modes in 14 minutes”, “Learn this one secret to master improvisation”. What unadulterated, pure horsepucky!
    This guy tells the truth. His first words are “no shortcut”. Wow. Imagine that.
    If people would spend their time following his advice instead of hunting for the (non-existent) “secret”, they’d advance.
    Lord bless you.

    For me, a particular challenge is that a lot of the guitar music I have (mostly classical, intermediate) spends about 90% of the time in first position, so as a kid I never learned to be comfortable with the fretboard above the fifth fret. So, to finally get over this, I have started transcribing (yep, old school, into a notebook of black sheet music) some fingerstyle pieces so that they can be played in the middle of the fretboard, with a capo on seven (so, for example, if the piece is written in A minor to be played in first position, I rewrite it up a fifth, in E minor). This is just an exercise to force me to become as fluent in the middle of the fingerboard as I am at first position. I hadn't thought of it as a sight-reading activity, but now I realize it sort of is, as the change in where the notes are, which fingers to use, etc., and the fact that I use music that is not already familiar to me, is going to help me sight read across the fingerboard for those massive leaps (eventually?). It is work but I am getting so much out of it already.

    I'm working through the Berklee's guitar method. I hd to turn off the metronome. The reading is improving, but the hardest part seems to be recognizing the chords. And I'm only reading 5 minutes a day.

      How’s it going wit the Berklee book? I started 2 weeks ago and still circling the first 9 exercises. Takes a lot of patience…

    I think this would make for a great course on Truefire. From beginners to advance. It will be slow and boring, but so worth it.
    Keep the good work Frank!

    Thank you so much!

    I am still learning but it’s easy to be in the 1% of readers given 99% of guitarists can’t read. I am also teaching a young girl how to read treble clef and rhythms for guitar right from the start. She doesn’t even know what tab is yet. Maybe I’ll mention it in a few months. Ha.

    Dumb question - why the Eb book?

    • @business1st115
      @business1st115 Год назад

      Jazz music is often transposed to Eb since alto and baritone sax are Eb instruments which makes it easier for them to play with multiple instruments or artists such as pianists at the correct pitch in concert based settings. This is also the reason why Vignola rejects TAB as a form of musical notation as sheet music provides universal language across all instruments for performance while TAB excludes many other instruments than the guitar as a language.

    I’ve been playing guitar for 30 years. I can’t sight read, I can’t get the rhythm down so I can’t tell what the song sounds like without playing it on a music player with reading. Do you have any videos on the rhythm side? The notes are easy to figure out, especially with a key signature, but the rhythm eludes me.
    I can play mostly anything due to my experiences, knowledge of theory, modes etc. but when i sight read it’s like I am going back thirty years.
    Thanks

      There are tons of apps and websites for this. If you really want that, it’s a search away. I’d say rhythm is the easy part. It’s pure math. I usually clap or tap it out first without any instrument
