The looks and smiles Oteil and Butch were sharing, was heart warming and sad at the same time. Butch truly looked happy. Sad the way it ended for him.

The dynamics of this version take this song to heights way beyond any other version I've heard. I did not hear this band with Derek and Oteil play this song, but I saw it live a couple of times in '91 with Woody and Dickie, and I was so pleased that the band was writing new material with this much depth when so many bands' songwriting peaks long before they break up. Which brings a couple of observations. 1. It was weird to not have Dickie in the band mainly due to his massive songwriting contribution. On the other hand, Derek and Oteil were a trade up imo - hence this version of Kind of Bird is so much better. Butch Trucks' smile near the end confirms a similar sentiment to me. 2. From what I've read, Warren took a stand for songwriting, and I figure it was a factor in Dickie writing Nobody Knows, Back Where It All Begins and No One to Run With, AND.... that when eventually Dickie got lazy about songwriting, it was a symptom of why the band booted him, and why Warren then returned. Further evidence of Warren's positive influence can be seen with the Phil Lesh Quintet from 2000-2003. Phil Lesh has long been my favorite musician due to his playing and writing from 1968-1974. I figured Phil's peak was long past when the Quintet brought Phil to a new peak in playing while in his early 60's fresh off of a liver transplant, and this band was also writing material that surpassed (as a whole imo) any songwriting by the Grateful Dead since the 70's. All that to say, this version of the band was definitely breaking new ground on this night in 2010.

Warren had no say or influence over Dickey’s songwriting…. I remember reading Warren saying “lack of new material” was a reason he and Woody were leaving but that was around ‘96. Dickey had written ‘Noone Left’ in the early 80s when he was in Nashville and Nobody Knows and BWIAB are some of the best tunes Betts ever wrote and would be featured on excellent ABB albums of the 90s that Warren contributed to. Truth of the matter is that Dickey could be “mercurial” when on “unsteady footing” and was a menacing presence at times. Warren and Allen were chill guys and had had enough. It was Gregg Allman who had ran out of songs. Dickey continued to write for the band after Haynes and Woody departed for Govt Mule (JJs Alley, Rave On). If those songs held up to other Betts tunes well, that’s up to the listener but new tunes nonetheless. Betts ultimate dismissal was due to experiencing personal tragedy in 2000 and dealing with it in the wrong ways, rendering him impossible to work with. Warren came back bc Woody died and was offered the position of Creative Director of ABB with a beefed-up salary. Was too good of a gig to turn down. He and Derek gave it all they had and did a darn good job…
