This is a great demo! Easy to follow, landmarks are noted to help keeping proportions and alignments. Richard, thank you for another great drawing lesson!
Thank you once again for this great advice, R . I been thinking about it a lot since , and I realize this is the exact reason for my live model drawings (when I’m at easel) are stiff , while the ones I do during your sessions (off easel) are complete opposite. Also I’m waaaay slower when at easel. You helped me so much , R , I’m grateful , you are the best !
Thank you ! Unfortunately my shoulder starts hurting when i sketch like that at the easel. But i feel like if I am drawing a bigger finished work I have to work at the easel or I loose the overview.
My teacher taught us Gestalt method where you draw shapes very quickly. We are told to not draw contours but instead volumes. What do you think of that?
When you draw the way that you do in this video, do you ever rest your hand/fingers on the paper while doing the strokes? Or is your arm always raised above, with only the pencil touching?
@@RichardSmithemanArt Yes, that is what I was thinking. I currently find it difficult to keep a steady and firm hand with only the pencil touching, *especially* if I want to draw very light lines. Does it take a lot of practice to improve this, would you say?
The way you are holding the pencil , is this just due to the fact it's charcoal and might get messy or is there another reason , less controlled strokes etc?
Interesting information about the easel and drawing board. Thank you.

That's great to hear and yes, you'll draw way faster this way!

I'm certainly thinking volumetrically first, then shape/design. We want to be thinking more like sculptors rather than copying a series of shapes.

Ideally only the pencil should be touching the page, or the drawing can get messy.

The most valuable drawing tutorial ever! Can I ask how you sharpen your charcoal pencil? And is it a soft one? Thank you for your excellent teaching!
Thanks! I use general's 6B charcoal pencils and I sharpen with a blade, carefully!
@@RichardSmithemanArt Thank you so much!
