So interest rates for school loans can be as high as 15% where as mortgage rates are generally 2-3% (as of July 2021) yet you cannot default/declare bankruptcy on a school loan but you can default/declare bankruptcy on a mortgage. Given that, why are school loan interest rates not capped at a certain amount above the prime interest rate.

Paying down student debt is certainly preferable to spending on frivolities, but my advice to my daughter, who is soon to start accumulating student debt in law school, is to pay as little toward debt as possible when she starts her career and put as much as she possibly can into savings, until she has easy coverage of at least 6 months expenses. I think it is especially important for young professionals to get in a position ASAP where they are not dependent on the next paycheck. So if the senior partner asks them to do something a bit fishy, they can say no and walk away without having to worry about rent next week.

I am not sure what stage of school she is in but have her look up videos about scholarship money for law schools. I know multiple people who went to law school debt free. It is really dependent on her LSAT and GPA as well whichever school she chooses. Have her talk to lawyers very few will tell you the loans are worth it to go to a certain school. Especially if she knows where she wants to live and practice.

Great video Dr. Webb! Can you please make a video outlining all of the general monthly payments you have to make every month considering loans, overhead, employees, etc? The business side of medicine is definitely something that's neglected and not spoken of much of the time. It would be a great thing as another practical aspect people should consider before going into medicine and how it may vary in different fields.
Also how you really have to think about what kind of service you'd be providing, as for many specialties, the only way to really make money is through prescriptions of operations. This may not be the best way to practice medicine, so people should really consider the fact that medicine is really not the field to make money, but you will have debt and costs to attend to if you go the academics, pracademics, or private practice way.
I'm really interested in this business side of things and I hope more people start to look at medicine from the perspective of what service will they be providing in a practical sense and if the opportunity cost/cost-benefit ratio really worth it.

@@peytonmanthing6533 Some people prefer the upside of a high salary every year for life even if they have to delay it for more years. Also with business and engineering, the higher salaries come from being promoted or changing companies which will also take a few years. With becoming a doctor that high salary is guaranteed once out of training.

I went with common bond 6 months ago and im pretty happy with them. The only complaint I would give would be if you pay extra and use auto pay it will lower your monthly payment so that you are still making payments for the lifespan of the loan vs paying it off early. so you basically have to go back and manually pay the difference each month(which isnt really a big deal).

This is what Iam thinking I owe 97k as of today, just private loans at 5.2% and all Iam thinking is to stop paying... I mean do I really need credit ?? Can’t I just have everything on my wife’s name so nothing can be taken away plus no wage garnishment in PA so I don’t know I could just lease my cars and do a single lease payment instead of letting student loans drain the life out of me... let’s face it you only need credit for 2 things ... a house and a car that’s it ....

So if you don't have the genuine intrest or time to learn... don't bother there are other ways that are less volatile for long term savings :)
Oh and cryptocoins is like a religion so... i'm sure you get a lot of preachers saying it's the way to go lol

    Current plans
    1) Moonlight while still in residency in order to pay down preexisting credit card debt
    2) Live like a resident for up to 5yrs after residency (1.5 yrs left until graduation)
    3) Refinance private loans if possible
    4) Consider any and all means to increase revenue as a full time physician, via additional revenue streams
    5) Aggressively pay down debt.
The real #1 is CREATE A BUDGET. Every dollar should have a destination.

It depends on how you feel about debt, but paying it off as fast as possible might not be the most financially beneficial way to proceed. For instance if your loan is at a 3% interest, and you could invest money to make 7%. Then in the end you would end up with more money at the end of the loan if you invested and paid the minimum on your loan. However, there is some risk involved, so it depends on how well you know investing and how risk adverse you are. I know you didn't ask for my opinion, but there it is. You seem like a stand up guy and I'm sure you'll deal with that debt in your own way.
BTW I'm not suggesting investing money that you could need in the near future, like an emergency fund.

  • @BassFishingMN
    @BassFishingMN 3 года назад

If your interest rates are low on your loans I’d recommend to not be that aggressive with your payments. You can invest the money you’d otherwise use to pay off the student loans and make more money at the end of the day on top of it. There is a reason not all doctors pay off their loans immediately
