    Next step in the research process: You now have access to THE CREDITS. That means tons of names of people involved in production who are still alive and can be contacted to search for better copies of the footage and context of what happened to them since.
    Honestly, the restoration and modern examination of this film sounds like a legit excellant topic for a feature length documentary. Basically, this video, but 6 times as long.

    • @pattheplanter
      @pattheplanter 2 года назад +178

      When you say "tons", I think the ten names we saw at the end were probably the entire crew. Worth a try, though. The production company World of Wonder has a website. They are producers for RuPaul's Drag Race and much more.
      Channel Five in the UK is so ultra low budget that you could probably pitch them a film and get it shown as long as you didn't want to get paid much. Whatever subject you want. When they were just broadcast, a lot of people couldn't get the channel because the signal wasn't strong enough.

    You just described how a lot of tourists act. It's not exclusive to lesbians (and I wouldn't assume you think it is), and that might have gotten lost in the media frenzy. I saw groups of male British tourists acting just like that in Skala Eressos when I was there in 2010. If you tell the British archive you are a big shot influencer who wants to restore a film that is important to lesbian history, I think they will want to digitize it for you. They are archivists that's their reason to wake up in the morning. And if you have like two or more bad vhs versions you cane "enhance the quality". I think even I would have the skill set to write a thingy that can pick which parts to use. Programming a thingy to make crummy data into good data is part of why I wake up in the morning.

      And researching these kind of cool little history stories is part of why I wake up in the morning. I love hanging out in archives when I get the chance. A few years ago, I interviewed an old man about a paper he wrote in 1979. To refresh his memory, he downloaded it off the archive website. It was the copy I had restored and put there. There's a really interesting story in the archives of one Supreme Court Justice, but it won't be available until 10 years after Sandra Day O'Connor dies and his archives become public. (10 years after the last justice who served with him dies). Until then, I'm waiting to find out the story and feeling bad about waiting for Sandra Day O'Connor to die.

I'm gonna be who I am and if that makes me a stereotype then take that up with the homophobes who judge us for it. Flannel and combat boots and rage and politics and empathy and veganism and even wanting an exclusive relationship with a woman are things that I like and are a part of me and that may be connected to my queerness to varying extents. I'd never want to give those up to prove a point about the diversity of the community or something. I don't worry about being femme or butch or lipstick or anything. Homophobes are annoying and I can imagine they wouldn't want to be stereotypds, so I don't get why they do it? They act as if we don't all look different and have our own styles an tastes and that we are just women who love women. I also think combat boots look cool on other women, though I personally prefer chunky heeled boots on myself. They're super comfy and cute! lol I also feel like I just wanna be me and not care what others think and I feel like I shouldn't be shut down for sticking up for myself. Been called unreasonable many times for speaking up for myself and it's so annoying. Like, people expect me to just sit there and take their shit? Hell no!

      Made me all nostalgic, honestly. Terms like "lipstick lesbian" started getting chucked around then - disparagingly, mostly - but for some reason "baby dyke" was ok and honestly, I fitted that one
      Unfortunately, it's also when I remember the TERFs really starting to show up at conferences and stuff and people were confused about it all.... not that that was new, but I started to learn to hate how we could turn in on ourselves.
      Odd, transitional period in lesbian history.

    This is very weird for me because I grew up in London and came out in 2004. Although I was like 14 so wasn't really in the clubbing scene back then (that's primarily because I was a nerd though because people absolutely started clubbing at that age here and at that time, id checking was barely a thing) but once I uhhh debuted into society(???) in the later half of the decade these are so very much the kind of women I met on the mainstream sapphic club and bar scene. To the point where I tried to see if I recognised anyone. I did not. Although grainy footage plus a decade, who knows. I knew people who went to lesbos both for pleasure and work and I've been to candy bar once because it very much has a meat market reputation and the vibes are very weird. It was the only full time lesbian bar in London at the time though, idk about now, but really it was better just to wait for a lesbian night at a different bar.
    Also I used to know this trans woman who was older and she used to basically tell us young bucks stories from the sex wars back in the 80s, apparently there was a lot of sneaking behind enemy lines for hook ups.

    The way my head SNAPPED UP when I heard the words Candy Bar... I still have a tiny hot-pink digital camera from the early 2010s that, if connected it to a power source, would undoubtably contain thousands of low-res photos of pre-transition Baby Lesbian Me circa 2012. I have a vivid sensory memory of the reversible sequins on the dress I always wore. It closed down in 2014 and the nation mourned.

    You and that subscriber probably saved this documentary from becoming lost media. Thank you so much, as losing any media, especially the media made by and for minorities, is always an awful thing imo. If we lose the things we create, we are doomed to repeat our mistakes. That's not a quote or a saying or anything, I just thought of it myself, but it's true. Even if those things we create seem "silly" or inconsequential. All media should be valued imo. So thank you for saving this from getting lost. It makes me wonder about other British documentaries tbh, as I am a Brit and I know that this country creates a lot of these types of programmes for channels like Channel 4 and Channel 5. We especially did so in the '90s-00s era. I wonder just how many of them have been forgotten about, lost to time, never to be found again. How many VHSes are just sitting in someone's attic from that time they wanted to see that one interesting documentary in 2004 but had other commitments so recorded it, and now they don't realise that other people might be looking for *their* VHS as lost media? Do my family and I have any VHS tapes of lost media that we've forgotten about and don't know have become lost? Did I watch any of the documentaries that have now become lost media myself back in the day? It's so eery to think about it all...
    Thank you again for sharing this. ❤️ I hope the lesbians who went mad in Lesbos are thriving today. 😂🥰💖

    I unironically hope that a better copy appears some time soon and is archived properly for LGBT+ history. Although it seems silly and mundance, these sort of videos are still an important part of history as it shows these women simply -being-. We tend to forget that behind everything that goes on in terms of important events in history, incidents, important individuals and so on, what we fight for is simply this - the very right to exist and have lesbians go mad in Lesbos.
    It's an unremarkable documentary, but in its mundane nature, it still depicts something beautiful. Unironically awesome.
