Informative video! I have one year of internship experience in my home country followed by one year of MSc experience in the UK. I cleared entrance to my fellowship training in internal medicine but I haven’t started my training yet, as I work in the health sector via public service Commission which requires me to work at primary care settings for the initial two years (I still have another year of peripheral posting left to start my fellowship training). I completed my MRCP part 1 right after internship and part 2 written during a full time MSc.. I'm currently taking preps for paces and I'd like to know what would be an ideal amount of timeframe to fully prepare for the paces exam?

Hi Arju Not many courses are running face to face in India at the moment because of COVID. I would recommend just wait for a few days for the situation to settle down. These courses are expensive , enrol only for the best.

Also can you throw some light if SCE Acute Medicine examination and it's future?
Hi Indraneel In the UK, it is important that you show loyalty towards a specialty. For example, if you have done MD in respiratory medicine, the job interview panel would request for a clarification as to why did you go on to do DM cardiology. You may very well say I changed my mind because I have now developed an interest in Cardiology but this may come across as a lack of commitment to the specialty. DM cardiology with MRCP may well get you a specialist doctor or Locum consultant post depending on which part of the UK you would be working in. SCE in acute medicine again would be diversion towards acute medicine away from cardio or respiratory and best avoided in your scheme of plans. All the best Aparajita

Hi Shilpa I would strongly recommend a course where the instructor :candidate ratio is not more than 1:7/8. I have trained under Dr Shuja Punekar in the UK who is an excellent teacher. I would strongly recommend his course in India if you get a chance to do it.

Hi Arya MRCP as a degree is very different from MD or DNB . Please remember, MRCP is a degree whereas MD and DMB are postgraduate training courses ,much like IMT in the UK. MRCP is definitely a coveted degree worldwide and will definitely make you a better doctor. So definitely go for MRCP irrespective of MD or DNB. As far as I am aware, West Bengal board considers MD and SNB to be equivalent. All the best.
PACES exam is standardized all over the world. Where you do your exams from has no effect on you final degree so no problem in working in UK at all if you do the exam in India.

Hi Hitesh PACES courses are absolutely a personal choice. If a candidate feels confident in their preparation, they may not need a course.Many NHS hospitals have their own inhouse free courses which are very helpful for practice and feedback.
Oxford handbook for clinical medicine is the popular book; for the purpose of PACES , pastest videos are more than enough for standard examination technique.
There are many medical schools in the UK. The leading manual in this field used to be Hutchison's Clinical Methods (1st ed 1897). Edinburgh favours Macleod's Clinical Examination 1st ed 1964): John Macleod also edited Davidson's textbook of medicine. From Bristol we have Naish and Read's The Clinical Apprentice. Don't forget Pappworth's Primer of Medicine: despite his being a combative outsider, at one time the majority of London FRCPs had obtained their MRCP after his course. He also wrote an amusing paperback on Passing Medical Examinations.
Hi Ravish There are many courses available in India but because of COVID not many of them are running face to face. For the same reason, there might be a longer wait between part 2 and PACES. Keep your preparation on point so that you are ready as soon as a slot becomes available.
Do we need 2 years of experience other then 1 year of internship for PACES?? Is it an eligibility criteria or is it for gaining experience so that PACES could be easier ?? Please clarify because I got too anxious after you told about the 2 years of time gap for taking PACES... TIA

Hi Hari A GP is a community based post where as a registrar would be very much like a senior resident post in India. Since you have already done MD medicine, if you clear MRCP, you would be eligible for Registrar posts in the UK. Alternatively , you can apply for MTI posts. Check out my video on MTI to get a better idea on MTI pathway of application. To be eligible for ST training you have to complete MRCP.

Hi Bhavya The only prerequisite for MRCP part1 is a 12 month internship. For PACES you need to have 2 years clinical experience in medicine. You don't need MD or DNB.

Sidharth They is only one course in Delhi , but if you can travel to Kochi or Chennai, you will have more options. You can definitely apply for super speciality in the UK after MRCP as long as you achieve the competencies at par with the UK trainees. MRCP is only one such criteria. Same with DM .. you competencies would have to be at par with the UK post CCT candidates.

It should take you 4 - 6 months to be fully prepared depending on how much time and dedication you are able to put into the preparation.
