I have been looking at other sliders all day since I saw your post this morning. I am trying to make a build list now. I'll probably use stepper motor for moving for timelapses and relocate it to the camera base. so the cable to control the camera will be short. The mechanical pan and pushing by hand will be perfect for video. I have a Pan Tilt Gigapan rig, that I will need to make sure can be incorporated if needed. Where I don't need metal I hope to use 3D printer, for connections and such.
Jim, I don't think there is any way you can mount the motor anywhere other than on the rails with this style of slider. The belt is moving the rails and camera dolly in opposite directions and needs to be on the rails in order to do this. I'd be very interested if you devise a way to do it, because I would love to move the weight of the motor to the tripod head to reduce the rail weight.
I have decided to slow down a bit and mock something up in SketchUp. Also wondering if I made a little box with 20X20 and used V-slot could I place one plate inside and one outside? Or use 20X60 flat with OpenRail above and below.
Hi Andrew. I love your slider. I would like to know two things. What size is (1), the centre pulley attached to the gantry and (2), the size of the eye bolts?
A couple of small bearings in a crudely made aluminium block for rotation, actuated by the small carriage running along the angled v-slot. The slider v-slot is running through 4 of the v-slot rollers mounted on a plate. 2 of the v-slot rollers on one side have an eccentric shaft that enables them to be adjusted to remove any play. Useful when you're only using basic tools to make. No CNC here! Most sophisticated tool used was a bench drill.
HI, Great work. Waiting on delivery of items from open builds, I'm building two, a shorter one, similar to yours here. Questions with parts, 1). pulleys at the end of the track, open builds doesn't seem to have a bracket that lines up directly with track, so the rubber goes around the outside equally. 2). Where did you get the offset motor rig and bracket from? 3). Those axles made up connecting the offset pulleys? Thanks,
+G Mac All the bracketry is hand made using a chop saw, drill stand and a lot of filing, from aluminium angle. No drawings I'm afraid. This design doesn't require a great deal of accuracy in construction.
Thanks for the quick reply. Ok, I understand, all the stuff hanging off the back now is built - not ordered and augmented. Once I receive my parts, it will probably make more sense in how I can build it. Curious where you got the bigger pulley wheels from? Probably can just google it. I also realise that that isn't a step motor, and your motor has the offset as part of it - good thinking to incorporate that into tensioning. All the best.
Got my pulleys and belts from here: www.technobotsonline.com/synchroflex-t2.5x6mm.html . All my brackets are homebrewed. The pulley brackets on either end are aluminium angle. I've designed it in such a way (crude) that the accuracy of the brackets doesn't affect operation. I only have a chop saw and small bench drill, but a lot of files! The flanges of the bearings sit inside the brackets just in case my drilling resulted in a piss fit, then at least the pulley will keep them in place.
I'd really like to build to dual-action slider part on its own, without the motor or rotator, just basically copy the Edlekrone/Motion9. I have no idea what parts I would need from the Openbuild store though. Would you be willing to help me put a list together?

The centre pulleys are 30mm diameter with 40 teeth. The Eye bolts are 5mm spherical rod ends which self align.
What did you use for the rotational plane and also, what system did you use to move the longer lengths of v-slot over the tripod? LOVE this BTW.

although it also appears that there might be a second motor on the left of the unit.

Michael Sanders For manual use I think I'd just buy a conventional slider. It will be smoother and give you the option of using 2 tripods.
