Campus Folding Bike - Overview

- This video is an overview of my Campus brand folding bike. I purchased this bike in October 2021 to take with me on the GO Train to London, Ontario. I wanted to spend a few days in London biking around and since the trains to/from London leave/arrive Toronto during rush-hour, the only type of bike allowed on board is a folding bike.

Thanks CJ. A friend owned a bike very similar to the one in the video and I'm considering buying it from him. This video was very helpful. Thanks for the information.
Thanks for sharing your folding bike with us. I just bought a new SoloRock wonder 7 speed 20" folding bike. I purchased it for two reasons. 1) Fold it and put it in the back of my car to drive to a scenic location and start biking. 2) Fold it up put it in a grocery store buggy and take it with me inside so I don't have to worry about theft (it's bad where I live) while shopping. Have done both and it works great although I did get a few strange looks inside the grocery store. The cashier thought it was cool though so that made up for the earlier awkwardness.
Nice :) Folding bikes are pretty common in my city.
Great review Christopher! It's interesting to see how a folding bike works. I like the different DIY ideas that you came up with for things to add to the bike!
Thanks Josie. They are pretty neat yet simple bikes.
Nice to see how you always put things together..
Thanks. It's really nice when an idea comes together exactly as I envisioned it.
Very well done gave a lot of ideas and knowledge about a folding bike. I don’t have one but heck I’d buy one if I had a chance where I live.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
I felt compelled to buy a folding bike back around 2015. I researched all the options and eventually narrowed it down to either a steel framed Dahon, or a Brompton. I eventually bit the bullet and plopped down the $2000 Canadian they were asking for the Brompton demo model I test road at Curbside Cycle on Bloor. I still got it, and my big takeaway is that if you are going to use you bike very regularly (no car) then buying a $2000 bike might seem excessive at first but unlike a car it doesn't require the same level of maintenance or, experience the same level of depreciation. With every passing year you tend to forget the sting of the initial payment and only appreciate the quality of all the components you get to enjoy on a daily basis. You ever test ride a Brompton?
I've never test ridden a Brompton, but everyone I've ever met who owns one seems to love it. Fun fact: the front brakes that I have on my Iowa Linear came from a Brompton (they even say it on them).
Nice video CJ. We still miss your "Green Machine".Folding bikes look nice, never had one before tough.Them must be a good option for traveling when visiting another country and take it on a plane trip along with you.
Thanks. My green machine was featured in my most recent video!
Awesome work Chris!!! That is such an awesome bike!!!! I wonder if it can go long distances like 100+km.
WOW! been following cj form back in the 2010 times. Never knew C stood for Chris!
According to Strava, I've ridden that bike 310km. All of it was within the span of a few weeks during my trip and the lead up to it. My furthest distance was London Day 2 - 86.6km. After that trip though, I know I wouldn't want to ride it 100+km in a day!
@@cjhoyle LOL I totally understand that, and that is amazing buddy!!!!!!
I have same bike. I put a standard rack on mine.
Nice!
I wouldn’t put too much weight in the milk crate if I was you, can’t you install some support struts to help with heavier loads?
The steel tube which supports it is surprisingly rigid, though I would have preferred a more conventional rack which mounts to the frame of the bike.
overall how would you rate the campus brand? I am looking at two in good condition but can't find a price
The quality is similar to other department store branded bikes. Comparable to brands such as CCM, Supercycle, or Raleigh for example.
Hey CJ, I'm looking for a folding bike to commute to school and back. Do you know where I can by used ones in Toronto? Or know any budget ones that are new? And yours, have you sold yours? I might be looking into yours
Unfortunately mine has already sold. Kijiji is the website I normally use for finding used bikes. That's where I bought this folding bike from. As I mentioned in the video, I believe it originally came from a department store such as Canadian Tire. These type of stores still sell folding bikes.
@@cjhoyleAh ok. Random question, where can you get a milk crate? I'm not sure If I can just ask for one at my local no frills.
@@transportationland6395 Home Depot sells them. That's where I bought the milk crate shown in the video.
@@cjhoyle Got myself a folding bike from the brand "decathlon" nothing to fancy, but probably decent enough for my highschool commute that is around 5.4km. The milk crate will come in handy so I don't have to carry my heavy bags with textbooks in them, and save a bit money from the TTC and the hassle of crowding. Thanks a lot CJ!
@@transportationland6395 Awesome, glad to hear!
Is the bike sold? How much?
No, I haven't listed it yet.
Resell it with the milk crate!
Stock product almost always return a higher resale value. What would you rather have a supped up highly modified Camry or a well maintained totally stock version?
I was considering that, but like a mentioned in the video, the way I installed it was really only meant to be temporary. I wouldn't want someone to buy it and be disappointed when the wood started to deteriorate within a short span of time.
How much are you going to be asking for that bike?
He can't get more than $49 Canaidan.
@@insertgoodname4809 Just saw one on Kijiji with no seat selling for 200 CAN
@@mrMacGoover Oops, I forgot the about the "bike shortage" reducing supply and thus increasing demand. 3 years ago he would have gotten no more than $49Cad.
I'm not sure yet. Hopefully I'll be able to sell it for at least the price I paid.
