Free Range Games hello! In web of shadows you have .pcpack files. I am creating a Texture mod, so i would appreciate if you could tell me how to open these .pcpack files. Thank you in advance :)
It's such a bummer that the industry doesn't value creative minds like Chris Scholz. For all its faults, to me Spider Man WoS is one of the most memorable SM titles for committing to a fresh take on a beloved character and then swinging for the fences with a dazzling combat system, blissfully fluid animations, exhilarating swinging mechanics (often unjustly panned for not being 'realistic' enough) and a distinct, gritty atmosphere that could only be brought by a team of 90s veterans. Your interview fills up a few blanks and gives some much needed insight on the triple A industry's stranglehold on smaller aspiring studios. Thank you for an informative video!
Not me. I loved the PS2/PSP version of Web Of Shadows. It was a great throwback to the level based games by developer Amaze Entertainment and the writing for it was very funny. Open world doesn't automatically mean a better game. The DS version of Web Of Shadows was great as well. It was a Metroidvania and was developed by Griptonite Games.
Web of shadows had some cool concepts for sure. an extra year and a half in the oven and it could've been a way better game. I still love the idea of Ariel combat and how it looked like spidey was doing sick skate trick on enemies. The stylish swinging animations were really cool too, something about spideys ground movement always seemed off though. The mission structer was a let down aswell. So close.
Web of Shadows is such a great game when it comes to the combat and making you feel like spiderman... I’d love for people to give these devs a second go
I strangely feel like that cocaine "joke" may have been a little more real than you might think. lol 17 months to make an open world game, especially back then?!
I don't really like to shit on opinions, because they're just opinions, but Greg Miller is the kind of guy who would do nothing but vigorously mash against the A.I. in Street Fighter, then say the game's mechanics suck. I was going to say he's the type of person who would throw his friend under a bus for a dumb joke he made on twitter, and then fire him from the company he co-founded, but that's irrelevant.
This was a very interesting interview! Web of Shadows is definitely had some great moments, with both red and black suit gameplay styles and the whole 'Spider-Man in a zombie invasion' scenario was fun. But the game was extremely repetitive and I think it could've gone further with the story. I mean, Venom, the antagonist of the game, only appears 3 times!
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, is the best Spider-Man game out there. Sure it had its flaws but it was an amazing story and had great combat. Wish they could have got the chance to make the sequel. If I was rich, I would fund them to make it lol.
@@HugoStiglitz88 ps4's story is definitely better maybe even the web swinging but the combat of web of shadows is just amazing, spectacular, and sensational, I'd even argue that it's better than arkham (the web wheel is cool tho)
Hey mate! Thanks for the kind words. I love your content by the way, really great stuff. You're from Melbourne too right? We need to collaborate on something!
Web of Shadows could've been excellent if it had another year or so, but you could say that about SO many games right! Is it your favorite Spider Man game?
This was great. I miss all the ambitious Star Wars games of the past, and your discussion on AA studios perfectly fits the feelings I have knowing that EA has exclusive rights for the foreseeable future.
man did i love web of shadows! i would let all my friends take turns borrowing it and we all replayed it numerous times and always had a blast watching each other play! and duuuude i totally forgot about wakeboarding unleashed! my mom let me rent it from blockbuster and i tried so hard to get her to let me keep it but she made me return it in the end! both underrated games for sure
I treasure Web Of Shadows for various reasons. 1. As a fan of the symbote and the black suit, it's a cool "What If" story and the designs for the enemies and bosses are epic! 2. I love how you can switch freely between the red and black suit to make these crazy combos by alternating between the two and it's something you don't see in alot of games. 3. The combat and web-swinging mechanics were revolutionary and how smooth it was seeing Spidey move as he swung through the city. A feat that would be surpassed years later by Spider-Man PS4 but even now it's pretty great. Not to say the game is flawless. I do wish there was more you could do like races, arena mode like in Spider-Man 2, and post-game free roam/New Game +. But the fact the game looks as good as it does in the small timeframe it had to be made is a feat by itself.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Yeah it's a really impressive game given the size of the team and the time they had. You can only wonder what they'd have been able to do with another year or so, right!
Really love that you talk directly to devs when you make a videos like this. And i really love that you didn't shy away from Greg's blunt review when talking to Chris.
If only they lasted a little while longer. I'm sure "Spider-Man Classic" would have gotten better reviews. Including Carnage in the main story, and being able to play as Spider-Man and Wolverine, would have been great. I guess nothing good can last for ever. For those who don't know, Spider-Man Classic was going to be the sequel to Web of Shadows. After Shaba Games was closed, Shattered Dimensions took its place. spider-manwos.wikia.com/wiki/Spider-Man_Classic
Considering they only had one and a half year to make this game, being as good as it is was a damn accomplishment of its own, even if it's not perfect.
Hey there :) So you make a good point. I felt the most interesting aspect of the video was reading the reviews to Chris, and so I thought I'd emphasise it in the title to give people a glimpse into what makes the video interesting. I hope you didn't feel too misled, I guess I just wanted to highlight the video's best part.
Hey there, it's nice you are open with your viewers on your videos, to me the history of Shaba was the most interesting aspect since I didn't really know about them that much aside from WoS
Very very very excellent video and questions. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Thank you! And thank you to Shaba for making one of, if not, my most favorite Spider-man game of all time
Hello, my good sir! I'm working on a series of reviews for the Spider-Man games leading up to the new title and I was wondering if I could use a clip from this video in my review for Web of Shadows as I'm working on that review as soon as I'm done with Spider-Man 3. You would, of course, be credited audibly and visually in the video itself and a link to your channel and content would be provided in the description of the video
Web of shadows is my favourite. Freaking love it. Funny how they focused on the combat (which is awesome) yet they managed to get the best web swinging (in my opinion).
I thought Ultimate Spiderman was best spiderman game when I was in Elementary school. I totally would have got this game and thought it would be awesome. I think it's a fun game. And I like the vast amount of insight we have on the industry
I gotta give the guys at Shaba credit. Web of Shadows is no masterpiece, but it definitely beats out a lot of the more recent spider-man titles. Plus that fact that they were only given 17 months to make the game? That's insanity! The discussion about how the industry has changed rings really true with me as well. I miss publishers and developers taking risks on original concepts, knowing that they won't make a billion dollars. I miss when you wouldn't have to constantly ask if there were going to be microtransactions or loot boxes in games. Fortunately, I think with more time for more tech to become readily available, Indie developers will fill that gap of the industry that's been lost and start being able to present bigger games that not only continue to be based around creativity over profit, but will be able to fully hold their own in the industry along side the giants.
Thanks for watching! I've done a few more similar videos since this one actually, head over to my channel to check out an interview I just did with the creator of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon.
I loved this game, and still do. I grew tired of Spider-man 2, Ultimate Spider-Man etc, but I never grew tired of this game It's a really fun game. Is it perfect? of course not, it's really buggy at times and some things don't really make sense, but I still think it's such a fun game and it's really sad the plans for the sequel had to be canned.
Great video, keep up the great work! The developer is great too! Grind Session, and Wakeboarding Unleashed are amazing games! Web of Shadows actually looks like it has some really good combat! Good stuff Chris-- you've contributed some great games to the pantheon of gaming and I really appreciate it!
This video has popped into my head over the years and I finally found it again. Web of Shadows is still undefeated in the Spider-Man game series for its gameplay. Insomniac Spider-Man plays very smoothly but has the depth of a kiddie pool outside of the decent combat. Web of Shadows has an insane amount to do just none of production value of Insomniac. Shaba deserved way more credit and it sucks they got the short end of the stick.
I don't care what anyone says, I loved the side missions. Excellent way of roaming around the city and trying out the LOADS of combat options available. Screw the critics! This is definitely one of the best Spider-Man games ever made!!
My fav spidey game by far. I played the game story 4 times from start to finish to see the different options and to this date i return from time to time
being in 2023 now, replaying this game honestly it is really fucking good for what its worth, doing better aspects than spiderman ps4 to this day. Easily needs some sort of remaster or release.
I don't remember this studio at all, but when I was a kid that didn't matter to me. However, I remember playing the BMX, Wake board and Shrek games as a kid, and while I wouldn't say they were fantastic games I do fondly remember them which can't be said of many games I played back then.
Thanks for watching! We did briefly discuss the planned sequel to Web of Shadows, but it wasn't a particularly interesting part of the interview to be honest. I tried to keep the most interesting parts in the story and cut out any fat necessary.
I have the full transcript of the interview, if you shoot me your email I can send the part that we chat about the Web of Shadows sequel, maybe you'll get something out of it.
Best Spidey game in my opinion i literally played this game 15 times already. I still play it. This game has the best swinging ive ever seen in a spidey game! Fighting was movie like. Ofcourse it had its flaws but that made this game special, and remarkable. :)
Web of shadows is far from perfect, but it truly is my favourite Spider-Man game, and so many others! Shaba did the very best with what they could. Much love!
I did'nt have best memories playing this, but after watching this i think i can see that there were some neat ideas, amd it could it of beeen a great game with more time.
Wakeboarding Unleashed was a great game. I had a demo as a kid, which I replayed countless times. If I didn't watch this video I still wouldn't know the name though, so thanks a lot! I also had Shrek SuperSlam as a kid, and we would play hotseat with friends and cousins, very fun game, even if you don't care about Shrek. I do agree with you on Web of Shadows though, I couldn't play that game for too long, one of the first missions was so sadistic, I got frustrated and quit after like 10 attempts to finish it.
Hello Mr Scholz, I am a French 22 years old chemistry advanced technician. I am contacting you about the game Spiderman Web of Shadows. Being a big fan of this game, I would love to bring it something "new", especially in terms of textures, , modeling of some buildings and some elements of the gameplay, and why not continuing the story (I know how to animate with Blender, program in C++, using Unreal Engine 4 and I am fully aware of the time that it can take). I had seen some texmods of the main wos costume in youtube, but I want to do more, by adding some animations, more possibilities in the combat gameplay (like melee attacks for example), and by adding some cutscenes. Obviously I would love to share these free mods, and make a kind of publicity of this awesome game. Could I have an access to the engine of this game (Like GTA 5, developpers allowed mods creation on the PC game)? Have you got some "pack" tools to provide in order to add some features in the game/ to fix bugs... Whatever your answer, I would like to say you made a fabulous work with this game, I'd always thought this like the best reference ever seen from every spiderman games, which become a part of me . I hope to convince you and wish you good continuation. Cordially, Guillaume T. Ps : Sorry for my bad english, I'm french. Ps2 : Here it is another project I have, a short of Game Design Doc : forums.unrealengine.com/community/work-in-progress/123880-collapsing-iron-man-like-game (You'll see Spiderman WoS inspired me ;) )
Web of Shadows is my favorite 3D spider-man game (Maxiumum Carnage being my favorite 2D), I cannot believe how much criticism it was subjected too and how underappreciated it is even now despite it being the best. I've been playing spider-man games all throughout the gens since genesis/super-nes, through ps1 2 3 etc and Web of Shadows is in my opinion the standard although I'd put ultimate spider-man as a very close second and spider-man 2 as the 3rd. Best gameplay in the series, best web slinging in the series, great graphics for the time, wonderful boss fights, good voice acting (love u greg but wtf?) & a solid story. It's true that the missions can get a little repetitive, but I can say the exact same thing about Spider-man 2. Anyway, it's not the perfect spider-man game by any means but from what I've played it's the one I liked the most. Also, nice video, I hope videos like this can perhaps respark interest in this game and maybe one day garnet it the respect and appreciate it deserves.
I like that the WOS Combat was on the ground, wall, and air but I didn't appreciate all the flashy energy stuff. It made it look like Spiderman had DBZ powers. But other than that effect, the combat was awesooome.
I loved Web of Shadows. Thank you for giving a great Spiderman experience Chris. On my opinion it's best 2. Best SM games after Ultimate Spiderman. But it's didn't hold up because of us. I played that game on pirate copy like everyone else.
Honestly imo Web of Shadows (for me at least) is what I always thought was a fixed Spider-Man 3 (same premise with the symbioyes, more side characters and not buggy)
10:52 Just wanted to say I completed a run and finished every side quest in the game, save for collecting all the spiders. Because fuck those. Honestly feel like I could write a comprehensive guide on the game at this point, complete with enemy types and AI interactions.
Still waiting for a Web of Shadows style AAA Spider-Man game with bosses, environments and personality as good as Shattered Dimensions. Not looking forward to Insomniac's game unfortunately. Looks mediocre in terms of graphical fidelity (because it's not on PC. 30fps is garbage) and from what i've read, it lacks skill based gameplay which is a real shame. Respect for Shaba and Chris! Thanks for making Spidey as agile, fast and badass as he deserves to be! Copying Rocksteady (who did amazing work on Batman) makes no sense for a character like Spider-Man, Insomniac.
Actually, I disagree... Rocksteady's Combat Countering mechanic suits someone such as Spider-Man who has 360 degree environmental awareness and bullet level reaction speeds far more than Batman..
This game would be my favorite..if it had a freemode after the story. I really wanted to 100 percenrlt it and get all the spiders, but i didnt feel like going through the stressful story over again.
My favorite Spidey game of all time... so sad it didn't get an actual sequel. How were you able to interview these awesome guys?

Web of shadows is far from perfect, but it truly is my favourite Spider-Man game, and so many others! Shaba did the very best with what they could. Much love!
Thanks for checking out the video! Yeah they're definitely to be commended for their work.
Greg is still pissed cos he still cant get the web stike to work ROFL
Extremely underrated game !!
Absolutely loved this game.
What's the song starting at 4:51?
web strike system was amazing and i hope it comes back in some way
Wish the game had more time put into it, im 19 but have been playing it since it came out and still do
17 months! Mad!
Web of Shadows was the first game I ever had and I loved the badassery of the aerial combat and the symbiotes were cool af
I played a lot of Grind Session. It was an awesome game. Matt Hoffman as well.
I remember playing the Matt Hoffman game or THPS back to back with my friends back in the day, lol.
Dope interview👌🏾i just hope that one day we can at least get a remaster of the game to bring back a spark to it and clear the game’s name
thanks so much for checking it out! I'm glad you liked it.
Hello Mr Scholz,
I am a French 22 years old chemistry advanced technician.
Cordially,
Guillaume T.
Ps : Sorry for my bad english, I'm french.
Ps2 : Here it is another project I have, a short of Game Design Doc : forums.unrealengine.com/community/work-in-progress/123880-collapsing-iron-man-like-game
(You'll see Spiderman WoS inspired me ;) )
Buddy, do you really think contacting him through a RUclips comment will work? Jesus...
Email him yourself.
Honestly, I love basically every main Spider-Man game that has come out. Each of them has their flaws, but I find lots of enjoyment in all of them.
Hey man as an Aussie, does MB II still have a community. I want to play it again but idk if its worth downloading if it doesnt have a community
I heard that the servers are still active.
Best superhero combat system and best webswinging. We need sequel and remaster. Game Brain what is your deal with not praising this game?
Web of shadows and Spider-man ps4 are my favourite spider-man games ever.
Shrek Super Slam was one of my favorite offline multiplayer game
Web of Shadows had the best web swinging
@@GhastlCloud775 nahh it wasn't, got a hell of different button combinations
@@GhastlCloud775 nope it wasn't dumbass
OH SHIT LOL I JUST REALIZED IM IN THE COMMENTS IN THE VID LOL
Haha, glad you noticed man. It was all in good fun, no malice intended.
I loved Web of Shadows. Thank you for giving a great Spiderman experience Chris. On my opinion it's best 2. Best SM games after Ultimate Spiderman. But it's didn't hold up because of us. I played that game on pirate copy like everyone else.
"it was a lot of cocaine" hahahaha love it.
Honestly imo Web of Shadows (for me at least) is what I always thought was a fixed Spider-Man 3 (same premise with the symbioyes, more side characters and not buggy)
easily my favorite Spider Man game
10:52
Just wanted to say I completed a run and finished every side quest in the game, save for collecting all the spiders. Because fuck those.
Honestly feel like I could write a comprehensive guide on the game at this point, complete with enemy types and AI interactions.
Dude this is my favorite game they don't know what their talking about
amazing insight .
Thanks so much for watching I appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed it.
Dude! Sick video.
Thanks so much man! Appreciate the support.
Pandamonium was great! Used to rent it all the time!
Best Spiderman Game Hands down. The game has aged well.
This is accurate of the web of shadows so thanks
Came to Spider Man video
Started downloading Shrek SS again
Where is Skate 4? That's the question he was asking. :)
Thanks for checking out the video. I want Skate 4 so much as well. Shame EA closed Black Box down years ago.
EA, the killer of all.
My favorite to play at home when I'm not spider man
This game would be my favorite..if it had a freemode after the story. I really wanted to 100 percenrlt it and get all the spiders, but i didnt feel like going through the stressful story over again.
