Whenever there is a friend telling me after a breakup that they wished they could forget their ex, I tell them to watch this film. It's so easy to remember the negatives at the end and forget the positives of a relationship.
I think that's the message of the story too. The memory erasure is ultimately just a plot device to be able to convey this very message. Also the types of people we are towards the end of a relationship in many ways is a product of who we are. People who go through multiple marriages never seem to get it. If one relationship fails, it might be your partner, but if you continually fail at relationships, it could be you that's the problem.
@@neil2444 "People who go through multiple marriages never seem to get it." IKR. You would think they would have learned after the first one, LOL. Older does not always mean wiser.
Coby, you said such a good thing when they were listening to their tapes at the end. They're talking about all the things they didn't like about each other, but you said, "It's not true, it's the worst things you can think of." If you lump together all of the worst things about somebody, it doesn't make it their true story.
This film is one of my favorites and even in reactions to it like yours I will notice tears on my cheeks while viewing and ask myself, "Seriously, you're letting this get to you again?" Yes. I think I will.

The important thing is that their second relationship isn't doomed. Maybe they've changed enough (even with their erased memories) that they're now a better fit for each other, or maybe the demise of their first relationship can be traced to a totally random event that won't happen this time, or maybe a totally random event will happen this time that will save their relationship, or maybe this new start is enough to do that -- or, worst case, maybe it'll fall apart all over again, but this time they'll be able to keep the memories of the good times. This movie ends with hope, and hope is beautiful. That's why we cry.

This is a great one. Really blew me away when I saw it in the theaters, I think. I love when comedians get to that stage where they want to not be funny and stretch into dramatic roles. Sometimes it doesn't work, but sometimes it can be really great. Jim Carrey had already been on that path, a little bit, but this was a new plateau for him. Prior to this, he did a biopic of Andy Kaufman called "Man On The Moon" which was good, but because it was Andy Kaufman, it wasn't exactly playing it straight. There's even a really good documentary about how method he went to be Andy, and if you don't know Andy, it's kind of debatable which one of the two of them were more out of their minds. You have to see to know what I'm talking about. Another one to check out on a lesser but similar note is Will Ferrell in "Stranger Than Fiction". Which isn't quite on this level, a little more light hearted, and comedic in a really sweet way, but still a really good flick, and Will Ferrell is very good while playing it very straight. There's even a couple moments where the story would've allowed for him to be a little more like you'd normally expect of him, but he doesn't go for it.
I had a very emotional reaction to this as well. The filmmakers effectively put us deep in the hearts and minds of the characters. But you predicted pretty much every plot point where I was barely keeping up. I've watched it probably a dozen times before and I'm still noticing things.

When I met my now ex we went to see this movie in the theatre - it was one of our first dates. We were like a carbon copy of Joel and Clementine - then around a month after we saw the movie we flew out to NYC and took the LIRR out to Montauk. We were together until 2016; one of the big arguments we had paralleled the one they're having in the movie talking about children - I was working a lot, and he insisted I wouldn't be spending any time with a child if we had one, so, no kids. Then when we split up I was so angry that I told my ex that if this memory erasing procedure existed I would have had him erased. Now years later I realized that I don't want to lose those memories; while we had a few bad times, nearly everything else was positive - and fun.
Both of them were amazing in this! The script was amazing. I watch this movie once every few years. It's one of those movies that surprises you just how good it is. Great reaction.
I'm impressed you cracked the timeline mystery so early in the movie. Myself I barely got it at the end. But it's one of my favourite movies. Though in the original script the movie ended with Joel and Clementine entering an infinite loop of breaking up, erasing memories and reuniting. Thankfully they thought better of it. The way it ends now is actually somewhat hopeful. Sure, they lost their memories of their previous life together, but they surely will remember the day they heard each other's tapes. And how in spite of all that they still were so drawn to each other. It strongly hints at love and attraction being about more than concrete memories you can mechanically erase. Which - until we finally understand the human brain fully - is a fascinating idea.

I think the part about being drawn to certain people is kind of b.s. If people naturally went for people based on some inherent feeling or vibe then so many different kinds of people would be going out. Relationships are formed based on attractiveness and even more so social value. Like for you, would you date a guy who did a customer service job? Or would that make you question whether to give him a shot? I’m not saying this to be rude, just to point out a sad reality. And if I’m being super honest, I think straight guys don’t care nearly as much what their partner does as other people do. Like, I would date a movie theater usher for all I care if I liked her and found her cute. It’s nice to see two characters who I would categorize as definitely not the most desirable. Makes it feel real.
So many people think that Jim Carrey is very funny. I have always thought he’s a much better dramatic actor. He is so underrated when he does serious film films.
I live on a narrowboat. During lockdown I started threading plastic bottle tops onto a string (I have 3 young grandchildren so that’s legit). A mate asked for a progress check, so I draped Lydia over a guitar and took a photo. When he requested a further update I re-staged the photo and got the reply “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
48:15 Joel: You said "so go" with such disdain ya know? Clementine: Oh, I'm sorry... It's so easy to get your feelings hurt in a relationship. It's hard to properly communicate and be "on" all the time.
I could tell some stories about how this movie shaped my choices, maybe tricked me (with my help) into making mistakes, and ended up telling me how to embrace those choices and live my life properly. We do not lead perfect lives, and we should never forget those lives. Ever.
I really love this movie, but I first saw it in a theater with the person I was in the midst of a rapidly failing relationship with. An uncomfortable experience for both of us, to say the least.
Charlie Kaufman is a bona fide genius. A reviewer once said this is the most realistic depiction of a relationship in film. I must agree. But the footage of them frolicking in the snow at the end plays in a loop three times. What are we too make of that? They can't repeat their original actions, since Mary has destroyed Lacuna. Now you only get one more chance. . . . If one has the guts, I highly recommend Kaufman's other films, especially his magnum opus "Synecdoche New York" (2008). After watching it, one of the New York film critics spent the rest of the night alone in a bar getting drunk. Brilliant work, but strong coffee.
I can literally remember being bathed in the sink, and also when I was 4 and too old to be bathed in the sink and I was upset about that. Very relatable.
I don’t know if any line in any scene better summarizes regret in love than “I wish I had stayed, I wish I had done a lot of things. I wish… I wish I’d stayed” This is consistently in my top 2 films ever, only joined recently at the top by “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once”, which I consider a sister film in a lot of ways
This is my favorite film of all time and out of ALL of the reaction videos I have watched for it and ALL of the people I’ve shown it to for the first time in my real life, I am pretty certain you caught on to the beginning being the second meeting faster than anyone I have ever seen. Bravo, my friend. You are very smart, genuine and intuitive and I really appreciated and respected your commentary throughout. You more than earned a subscription from me and I look forward to following your channel from here on out.
29:02 - He is fighting the erasure of his own memory because he has changed his mind during the actual procedure. This makes the work of the technicians more difficult. He also seems to be trying to alter his own memories. It is like being in a lucid dream and trying either to alter the events in the dream, or else fighting to wake up out of it. The Elijah Wood character is one slimy worm indeed.
Ooh nice, never seen _anyone_ "get it" that fast, I certainly didn't (saw this in the cinema and you could kinda feel the ripple as the audience hit a critical mass of penny dropping :). Such a wonderful movie. Painful and funny and beautiful. An _actual_ love story. Almost certainly top ten for me (I don't really _have_ "a top ten" but i'm pretty sure this is in it :). And a low-key _amazing_ cast. (when you were talking about the stars I thought "What about the Plough/Big Dipper, doesn't _everyone_ - at least in the Anglosphere - know it ??" then I remembered you're an Aussie and it's a northern constellation. Unlike Orion, depending on the season :)
Yep. The technology is completely made up fantasy and yet the movie feels super grounded because the emotions are so real. One of my favourite movie ever.
Love this movie. This and (500) Days of Summer are probably my favorite modern rom coms. Clem is the epitome of a manic pixie dream girl and that's kinda my jam...
I wouldn't trust the characters which: Ruffalo, Dunst or Wood play to even execute: a random error, effectively!! They are physical representations of: unreliability and carelessness. 🤬🤬 🤮 I loathe those "people" the MOST (in this!)!
This is a really good movie. Usually I find Jim Carrey irritating, but he really nailed the role here. I wish a place such as Lacuna actually existed. "How happy is the blameless vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd..."
that was wonderful, you picked up a lot of things on the first time. if you really want a kaufman film unchained then hopefully somebody pops in Synecdoche, New York, a movie about mortality. somebody gave him the keys to the car and wow is that movie dense. eternal sunshine is one my favorite films. the poem which is in a throwaway scene is exactly what the movie is about. is it better not to feel pain or to make new memories with both sorrow and joy? great channel, keep on making great content.
After watching your reaction, I'm watching the movie for about the 7 gazillionth time. Never realized till now how prophetic the silly little huckleberry hound song was. Oh my darling, Oh my darling, Oh my darling Clementine, You are lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry Clementine
Selective memory erasure isn't actually all that farfetched. It is a technology which scientists are working on now, using certain drugs. But it would not be quite as depicted in the film.
Can’t believe I never noticed from the opening scene that Jim Carrey is left-handed (might lose my nerd badge). He’s not is he, we’re watching it back-to-front.

Absolutely a Jim Carrey favorite of mine, one of my ex's looked just like Clementine. Even down to the hair so this hits in a weird way with the premise of the film, forgetting.
I saw this film in the theater when it came out on a date with a girl I had had a crush on for 6 years. It devastated me. She didn't like it at all. you're a genius to have figured out the entire thing right at the outset but i feel like it also ruined your experience a bit because you knew the twist/ending the whole time so the memories being erased had less of an emotional impact
Around 2000 was the last time they had a run of really good movies. While this seems like science fiction, dementia is not. Its why when I see adverts for "experiences you will always remember" just another example of people selling things they cant deliver.

Can you please check out the move Adaptation after this, its fantastic. Nicholas Cage plays Charlie Kaufman, the writer of this movie.
Girl, you figured it out real quick, I was pleasantly surprised at the end
Such an emotionally heartfelt reaction, not to mention the nuanced and thorough analysis! You've locked in another subscriber and I am looking forward to more of your reactions! Thank you
The cinematography for this movie is amazing. They were able to do so many effects in camera (forced perspective, set changes, etc.).
And I really recommend looking up the IMDB trivia for this movie!
Devastatingly, visceral movie that makes most anyone who watches it mine their own personal timelines of highs and lows with exes...quite an artistic achievement. Beck's cover of Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime is perfection. ❤Coby's reactions. Cheers!
I really enjoyed your genuine reaction to this underrated movie
With the audio so low, subtitles would have been nice
Probably copyright issues and did you not notice the entire movie was mirrored, you wouldn't have been able to read the subs anyway.
Wonderful reaction Coby. Such a sweet movie.
You know, you can erase memories but you can’t erase how you grow from someone. I feel like their second time around will be even better.
Amazing how you picked up on the chronology in real time - the pages from the diary, the orange hair, when they met. Amazing
This is a masterpiece movie. The way they presented memories and how our mind works was incredible.
Gotta say I am really impressed that you figured out the chronology of the movie that early (at 14:40)
So many people think that Jim Carrey is very funny. I have always thought he’s a much better dramatic actor. He is so underrated when he does serious film films.
Man on the moon is a favorite
I live on a narrowboat. During lockdown I started threading plastic bottle tops onto a string (I have 3 young grandchildren so that’s legit). A mate asked for a progress check, so I draped Lydia over a guitar and took a photo. When he requested a further update I re-staged the photo and got the reply “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
48:15
Joel: You said "so go" with such disdain ya know?
Clementine: Oh, I'm sorry...
It's so easy to get your feelings hurt in a relationship. It's hard to properly communicate and be "on" all the time.
Hi Coby hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
My friend, you have struck gold. Total hidden gem. One of my favs, if not my number one
I love this movie so much
Hello Coby. This will be fun.
All right! I have seen over 2000 films in my life. This is #29. So obviously love this film. Can’t wait to hear Coby take on this great film
pretty low
Excellent. Personal.
I don’t know if any line in any scene better summarizes regret in love than
“I wish I had stayed, I wish I had done a lot of things. I wish… I wish I’d stayed”
This is consistently in my top 2 films ever, only joined recently at the top by “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once”, which I consider a sister film in a lot of ways
This and The Truman Show are among my favorite unconventional Jim Carrey performances.
14:38 - That is exactly it. You got it.
The initial spark is still there.
Your interpretation of this movie is excellent!
Yep. The technology is completely made up fantasy and yet the movie feels super grounded because the emotions are so real.
One of my favourite movie ever.
I got finished with watching this movie today. What a trippy film.
Love this movie. This and (500) Days of Summer are probably my favorite modern rom coms.
Clem is the epitome of a manic pixie dream girl and that's kinda my jam...
@@havok6280 garden state?
Anything by Charlie Kaufman is great, especially this one and "Synechoche, NY" starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It's epic.
Looking forward to this one Coby. You should add Sling Blade and Run Lola Run to your list.
I wouldn't trust the characters which: Ruffalo, Dunst or Wood play to even execute: a random error, effectively!!
They are physical representations of: unreliability and carelessness. 🤬🤬
🤮
I loathe those "people" the MOST (in this!)!
Oh my darling, Oh my darling,
Oh my darling Clementine,
You are lost and gone forever,
Dreadful sorry Clementine
Selective memory erasure isn't actually all that farfetched. It is a technology which scientists are working on now, using certain drugs. But it would not be quite as depicted in the film.
Can’t believe I never noticed from the opening scene that Jim Carrey is left-handed (might lose my nerd badge). He’s not is he, we’re watching it back-to-front.
Hadn't seen this since my divorce years ago. It was my breakup movie. Thanks for sharing.
Now that you've seen the film
You can watch this to have you enjoy their story even more.
Enjoy ...oh and the band 'A Fine Frenzy' you should check out her music, is coffee house good like the fist time I was in a quaint pastry shop and Norah Jones track Don't Know Why played overhead. It just goes good together

I knew then we were not compatible and my crush faded after that. I bought it as soon as it came out on DVD but have never opened it or watched the film since that night in the theater. I made it through your reaction, though. Thanks. 👍🏻😌
I think your fans would appreciate your reaction to: Schindler's List 1993 Directed: Steven Spielberg.
i see this as a cautionary tale. forget the past and you are doomed to repeat it
Always awesome to see your genuinely emotional reactions. *high-fives*
Valentine's Day is a USA fake holiday for already established couples, not for people who have just met.
It is meant to sell Greeting Cards, Roses, Fancy Chocolates and for fancy gourmet restaurants to make lots of money 🥰.
To see Jim Carrey in another great, serious role, check out the enigmatic, psychological thriller The Number 23 (2007).
Great film and awesome reaction! Women seem to sort this story out faster because they always notice the hair color sequence. As a guy, I think I watched this movie five times before it dawned on me that hair color was a clue. Duh!
YESSSSSSSSSSS
The making of this movie is good
I really can't watch this movie. Ironically, the memory of this reminds me of a deep love I once had. But, looking back. I really want to say, that Charlie Kaufman is an incredible writer. He has shown that in episodes of Black Mirror, and also in "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" too. I do need to see his other movies.
Loved your reaction to one of my favorite movies. This movie affected me so much I still can't stand dunst, ruffalo or wood. Lol. Carey is so underrated as an actor.
Also, I’m a little concerned about your lack of emotion
Your voice is too loud because you are wearing headphones, LOOOOOOOOOOOL! xD
Watching STALKER 1979 by Andreij Tarkovskji.
you're a genius to have figured out the entire thing right at the outset
but i feel like it also ruined your experience a bit because you knew the twist/ending the whole time so the memories being erased had less of an emotional impact
Around 2000 was the last time they had a run of really good movies. While this seems like science fiction, dementia is not. Its why when I see adverts for "experiences you will always remember" just another example of people selling things they cant deliver.
