  • Gioachino Rossini . Prélude inoffensif, for piano in C major from Péchés de vieillesse, book 7, QR ii/8.
    piano : Dino Ciani
It was in the late 1960s that promise was first held out of a complete set of recordings of Rossini’s late piano music. The brilliant young Italian pianist Dino Ciani had already recorded Volumes 7 (‘Album de chaumière’) and 8 (‘Album de Château’) of the Péchés de vieillesse for Cetra (nla) and more might have followed had he not died, aged 32, in a car crash in 1974. A pupil of Cortot who was himself a pupil of Rossini’s young protégé Louis Diémer, Ciani was a Rossini pianist per eccellenza.
