- The Battle of Mohacs in 1526 was one of the most important battles in the history of the Ottoman Empire as it opened the gates further into Europe and struck fear into the heart of the Holy Roman Empire. The Ottomans under the rule of Suleiman the Magnificent reached a a peak of prosperity and military might in Europe. The Kingdom of Hungary was in decline and Suleiman formed a formal alliance with the French King Francis I where Suleiman agreed to attack the Holy Roman Empire to help out the French. The Kingdom of Hungary was in the way of his objective. Three years earlier, Suleiman set out an army from Constantinople towards Buda.
King Louis II of Hungary did not intend to fight the Ottomans head on and retreat to Buda, however, the Hungarian war council decided to make a stand on the plains near Mohacs in Hungary.
Suleiman had around 50,000 troops while the Hungarians had around 30,000.

Hey, I'm Hungarian holding an MA's in History. Battle of Mohács definitely a pivotal point in our Medieval history. It's always interesting how other people from other countries which were involved in this event interpret it.
In our nationalist history interpretation, which is heavily infiltrates how Hungarian history is educated in Hungary, always emphasise that betrayal by Szapolyai János, who was the governor of Transylvania. Due to his ambitions to grab the Hungarian throne, he refused to help Lous II, who was still a teenager and inexperienced, at Mohács but other group of historians refuse this concept. On balance, the Hungarian king couldn't be a great military leader.
What was taught to us from primary and until higher education (Uni) school was that the losing this battle seal the country's fate for centuries (kind of romantic nationalist interpretation from the second part of the 19th century, which is still prevailing to a certain degree).
As for the technical part of the battle, we were taught that the Turks/Ottomans made their own centre deliberately weaker to entice the Hungarian heavy cavalry into the there where behind the lines of infantry, artillery was waiting to lay devastation on the approaching nobility led forces. So it was an ingenious military tactical choice!
This offers an explanation why the battle of Mohács was so catastrophic to the country which is left with a significantly weakened establishment. Moreover, the nobility was too busy itself to sort out who is going to be the next king. Thus there was left no any unifying forces in Hungary after Mohács.
However, the Ottoman Empire occupied the Hungarian capital, Buda after another 15 years!, in 1541, which remained under the sultans rule, with the middle of the country, until 1686 when the Habsburgs took Buda from the Turks.
This is what we learned so it would be interesting how Romanians, Serbs, Croatians, etc see these events.

My first choice in Age of Empires 2 was the Persians with their elephants then I changed to the Turks with their Elite Janissary fire arms, not even the elite long bow men had a chance. Awesome game, good times.

Point 1: The Fugger bankers put Hungary under international financial ban after King Luis withdrew the mining rights from them which they had on Upper Hungary (Today Slovakia) gold/silve/copper mines. The Fuggers sold copper to the turks -strategic resource to make cannons. Fuggers said the turks could have been stopped with 100.000 gold. But the ban worked. King Luis had to sell family trasure to hire mercenaries. (Most of them were late to the battle)
Point 2. The beat on the Turkish army was so heavy that Suliman ordred his troops to stay on their horses through the night - in pooring rain. He had no clue he won the battle. It became clear only next day. (So no dust was on the battle field, rather deep mud)
Point 3. The Turks spent only short time in Hungary and withdrew - they knew they beat only one of the 3 Hungarian armies. They did not want to risk to wait for the othe 2 armies to arrive.
Point 4. They returned only 14 years after Mohacs.
Great video quality, and 15 minutes is an ideal length I think.
Maybe an improvement possibility, if you make a birdseye map and illustrate the whole battlefield in the main points.

Thanks for bringing an important battle to life. The Ottomans were an almost irresistible expansive force for centuries and left their mark on Europe. The Balkans into which they expanded have been a source of unrest and readjustment that have caused great suffering to Europe and the world in the past 200 years.

After the Battle of Mohacs, the Germans could not find the courage to wage a field war with the Ottomans for a long time.
The Germans did not fight a war with the Ottomans even at Mohács. The Hungarian center forces included German mercenaries. But there were Bavarians, Czechs, Spaniards, Poles, Croats, and Serbs.

I've read that in Mohach battle sultan Suleiman used the "Turan tactic", the traditional war tactic of step-men; (false retreat & an ambush) but in this video I can not recognize it!
I tried recreating it with first line of attack falling back to the second
i saw that tactic imediatelly.
Simply placing the weak units at front was the tactic. It engaged the full Hungarian army, while the better trained units could score decisively. The Hungarians should have kept their cohesion and not try to pursue the retreating Turks.

This is a well made video and thank you. Although we think of Hungarian kingdom being in decline they actually had much more troops than usually thought. But being disorganized and in disagreement between Latin and Hungarian factions and not retreating and meeting up in the capital with all their combined forces, the Hungarian king greatly underestimated the Ottoman forces. Being young and brash , wanting to prove himself, and pressure from war council would be the Hungarian kings undoing. Nonetheless it was a heroic battle, many Martyrs fell and victory is with Allah Azza Wa Jal and those brave men and boys. InshAllah. Also God bless those brave Hungarians who would become great allies and friends of the ottoman's, these cultures earned respect for one another in the crucible of war, except those with bitter and poisonous heart's.

The Hungarian army was mostly defeated because of poor leadership. There has not been war in Hungary before the battle for 30 years. In respect of organization and commandment, the ottoman army clearly exceeded the Hungarian, not to talk of slight facts like that 9000 Czech soldiers were still marching towards the battlefield, and the well commanded army of 15000 of the Transsylvanian governor, János Szapolyai, was still heading towards the main army. This was due to inexperience that the King decided to enter into battle without them. (I am sorry I wanted to repeat my remark but under an another acoount. ;) )

@@seaman5705 No. Upper-Hungary (the territory of which is present day Slovakia more or less) was still existing, in present day terms that was the right holder of Hungary. The Hungarian King was still crowned but in Pressburg (Bratislava) instead of Székesfehérvár.
