The worst thing about this gym is just the place where it is, if you wanna do training, you have to walk back to another city far away, beacuse all the pokemons around the gym are lv 5 or less
Dig, Bounce, Fly, Dive…basically any move that makes the user evade most attacks for a turn before attacking. Also Skull Bash because that raises the user’s defence which is a nice thing to do when Norman’s Slaking is on its Truant turn. Sure Skull Bash is a normal type move so it won’t do that much damage but that defence increase you get on the first turn is pretty nice!
God I hated Norman. As a Gym Leader, and as a father. He just doesn't seem very nice. Slaking's a funny Pokemon. Slakoth's like "I'm gonna be lazy and stuff", then Vigoroth's like "Never mind I wanna be healthy!", and then Slaking's like "Yeah no it wasn't worth it."
My fight with Norman went like this: Beat spinda with little problems He sent of his slaking 2nd *shudders* and it ending up destroying my team until all I had left was my Golbat Golbat defeated Vigoroth with little problems I used confuse ray on his linoone to try and stop it attacking but it was faster and used belly drum so it came down to if it got to attack I would have to reset but it ended up hitting itself and I won and my Golbat evolved into Crobat :)
Yeah I did that, although Norman also uses Faint Attack, which can hurt you, and Yawn, which still works on Sableye. But yeah, it's a lot easier. Why do you say you caught it as a challenge? I've been raising a Sableye in Emerald and it's going really well for me, it's been one of the best Pokemon battle wise on my team, better than Blaziken and Aggron in places.
Hey Chugg! I started watching this LP today. This is where I got for tonight, as much as i don't want to stop watching, I have to. This is an awesome LP. This is my favorite pokemon game of all time and had never found a decent LP of it until now, thank you for providing hours of entertainment.
6:07 Focus Punch is such a stupid move. It only works if you DON’T get attacked on the turn of warmup, but if you do get attacked your Pokémon does nothing
Been playing emerald while watching this lp Currently laughing my ass off over how I cheesed his slaking by using protect on the turns it wasn't loafing around lol
I lost to Norman a few times. His Linoone would belly drum and I wouldn't get the kill off (having no fighting moves and being underlevelled) before he could start OHKO'ing my party. After some time in the desert and fiery path, I challenged him with a newly trained party. Spinda and Vigoroth went down easily. Linoone gave me some trouble, but I did get him down. But then Slaking came out and I had a 24 Torkoal I had recently caught. I spammed ember, hoping for a burn, and he countered twice. Once burned, I fire spin'd him and just let him burn slowly to death. I even took an attack, the burn helping to soften the blow. All in all I walked away with badge in hand and a victory under my belt (not a boner). My party thus far: Murderface (lv 30 Grovyle) Pickles (lv 30 Pelipper) Skwisgaar (lv 30 Manectric) Explosion (lv 30 Loudred) Toki (lv 24 Torkoal) Dethklok (lv 25 Anorith)
Zappahcracker I think as of Norman, I had a Lairon, Marshtomp, Breloom, and Skarmory, and Numel. As of now, I'm at the 7th gym. Nice Meme (Swampert) Level 39 Star Platinum (Breloom) Level 38 B.R.A. (Skarmory) Level 38 Skulker (Dusclops) Level 39 Coldsteel (Lairon) Level 38 Camerupt with no witty nickname, Level 38.
Dude if you hadn't taken out that Linoone right after it used belly drum, you could kiss victory goodbye. Even with a full team at full health, it could easily sweep everyone. It outspeeds everything you had and spams slash, which, with maxed-out attack, will cause a guaranteed one-hit KO on any pokemon, even Skarmory. I know - I've been there. The best strategy is to try and out-tank Slaking because of its truancy, and then pull in Combusken to immediately take out Linoone. To be honest, you only won because Linoone didn't immediately use that belly drum. Norman is probably the hardest gym leader because his Slaking is an epic tank and his Linoone can be an epic sweeper, especially after you get worn down by Vigoroth. Spinda is absolute shit.
Playing that DKC2 Forest music made me realize.. I don't think you've played a Donkey Kong game yet, Chugga! I'd love to see you play the Country series and/or 64, since 64 and Country 2 are two of my favorite games of all time!
Brick Break only breaks through Reflect and Light Screen. Also the Protect TM is available way after this fight so you'll have a hard time finding something with that move.
When I was young when I was battling a trainer and my pokemon was one level under theirs and after beating them and I leveled up in thought I took their level!😂
Slaking is ridiculously over-powered but its special defence is nothing great, even weaker than Arbok's. Arbok seems now to be my reference Pokemon haha I suppose Slaking suffered especially in gen IV upon the introduction of special Fighting moves.
Took him down with this team Yusuke lvl 27 (Grovyle) Genkai lvl 27 ( Azumarill) Kuwabara lvl 25 (Vigoroth) Hiei lvl 23 (Golbat) Kurama lvl 26 (Aron) Botan lvl 26 (Kirlia) No issue at all
cutemiapixie Yea Azumarill really got buffed. Love it. I always use Sceptile(3rd favorite pokemon), and now its mega evolution is Grass/Dragon. Overpowered
Ah, I remember first playing my Pokémon Ruby game. I had no idea what a monster Norman's Slaking was. I just though: "Ooh, Normal Types! My Breloom can take this whole gym!" Then raging after he beat me 5 times in a row.....
Has anyone noticed that Norman 's slaking is level 31, when it's supposed to evolve at level 36. Either chugga messed it up with the bio or dumb game design. Probably dumb game design.
+DragoWolf01 Running theme in Emerald is Trainers having Pokémon that you either can't obtain till later in the game OR evolve much earlier than they're supposed to. Ghetsis and Iris do it in BW1 and BW2 respectively as well, as they each a have mid-50s Hydreigon when Zweillous doesn't even evolve till Lv64.
+Frank Jake I always name my character Master because it's hilarious when anyone addresses you. In the Gen 1 games and their remakes, I named my rival Slave.
To me, it always seemed like the designers ended up moving Norman's gym late in development without compensating the story properly. It seems like he was supposed to be in one of the towns leading towards the outlying loops you haven't been to yet, so you could poke your head in early, go no further, and beat him later when you passed through again. But then he got shifted to a central area, so you have to go abruptly out of your way.
Moat comments in the comments section: Well I had a really easy time on the gym because i used my Blaziken. I used no heal items at all. Like, we get it. Blaziken is good in this gym
I don’t get why people think the strategy of cannon fodding is cheap, people like Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Imagawa Yoshimoto thought cannon fodding was effective
Norman's Slaking is to Gen III players what Whitney's Miltank was to Gen II players the maker of nightmares, the breaker of gameboys, the causer of rage

Here’s a tip: When facing Norman’s Slaking, use a one turn move on the first turn, but then continue to use two-turn moves that have a turn of warmup before use and have the warmup be during the Slaking’s Truant turn so it loafs around while you wait for your attack. Useful moves for this include Dig, Bounce, Dive or Fly as well as Skull Bash. I know Skull Bash is a normal type move being used on a normal type but that defence buff you get on the first turn of Skull Bash should help reduce the damage done by Slaking’s next attack on a non-Truant turn
"Moegami is gonna be the star player in this gym!"
*dies in first battle*
Lmao, useless fuck >:0
That's funny
"Moegami is going to be our star player in this gym."
*FAINTS*
I love how Slaking ate a berry while asleep. The definition of Nintendo logic.
thats why call works to awaken a pokemon. makes much more sense.
and raikou and entei can flee while being frozen solid
The worst thing about this gym is just the place where it is, if you wanna do training, you have to walk back to another city far away, beacuse all the pokemons around the gym are lv 5 or less
You know what is a good move against Norman's Slaking? Dig. Especially when you use it on the turn he is loafing around.

Have you seen a Weavile crit a night slash?
Megami i have, and i was the one being hit
:(
God I hated Norman.
I HATE NORMAN TOO
Casey Heidt why Norman is a terrible person, He didn't help his family move in to their new home
As a dad, he's fine. He comes home every day maye
*_"Moegami is going to be our star player in this Gym."_*
*Dies in the first trainer battle*
Just a fellow Slaking loafing around.
Stupid trainer, named me "bread", so it says "BREAD IS LOAFING AROUND"
*sigh* he always laughs :(
Sorry about that. Also, I'm sorry the game I had you on got stolen. On the bright side, it looks like you got out!
Slaking Well Slaking, even I don't understand how it's humorous. I guess it's because It Doesn't Affect Misdreavus!
Slaking But hey, at least you have 670 total stat.
Jake Boutwell Same as a few legends, aye.
Darth Vader wheres luke
You know what's the funniest thing in this whole game?
Emile still had "SLACK OFF" on his vigoroth.
Yeah...
Eckskalibur has
My fight with Norman went like this:
Beat spinda with little problems
He sent of his slaking 2nd *shudders* and it ending up destroying my team until all I had left was my Golbat
Golbat defeated Vigoroth with little problems
I used confuse ray on his linoone to try and stop it attacking but it was faster and used belly drum so it came down to if it got to attack I would have to reset but it ended up hitting itself and I won and my Golbat evolved into Crobat :)
That song during the gym always calms me when I hear it
Moegami will be our star player here.
*Moegami faints first time out and is never seen again*
I'm sorry chugga but when slaking was on the last of it's red health that was the time to use peck.
Always the chance that Norman might've healed again, so to get a decent attack head start if need be, he used steel wing.
I ended up beating Norman with my Sableye which I caught as a personal challenge. Normal type moves are useless against it.
Hell No Basically it wasn't a Pokemon I've used before so I didn't know how it would handle in battle or grow.
Sent out combusken against vigoroth, set up 6 bulk ups, swept the rest of his team
I had gardevoir use calm mind and I swept thru his team
I had a skarmory, against which slaking's poison boosted facade was not quite a 3hko
Norman is without a doubt one of the toughest gym leaders ever!
Not only is he hard, but there's not many places to level grind before fighting him.
That's true.
I always raped his team with Hariyama or Combusken.
İ 🅱️roke The Night Shade button with sableeye

Ever heard of Feint Attack?
Believe it or not I have a harder time w/ Tate and Liza in R/S. I'm always so underleved in that game

honestly, I think that most of the gyms in the game are a challenge, with the 7th always being the hardest for me too.
Hey Chugg! I started watching this LP today. This is where I got for tonight, as much as i don't want to stop watching, I have to. This is an awesome LP. This is my favorite pokemon game of all time and had never found a decent LP of it until now, thank you for providing hours of entertainment.
This gym battle is a perfect example of Murphy's law XD
when he said "YOU ASS!!!!" it scared the crap out of me
The Forest Interlude is possibly my favorite song in all of the DKC games. It's so relaxing!
Disco Train for me!
It's great. My favorite DKC 2 track alongside Jib Jig.

hey its you
Watching in 2022, literally could remember the days waiting for every new episode to drop, time to binge the series
Glad to know I'm not the only one watching a 10 year old let's play.
6:07 Focus Punch is such a stupid move. It only works if you DON’T get attacked on the turn of warmup, but if you do get attacked your Pokémon does nothing
Right as he says "Moegami will be the star pokemon of this gym" it gets taken out by a swellow *slow claps*
Isn't it GREAT that the GREAT Slavinator got the GREAT GREAT ball?
Been playing emerald while watching this lp
Currently laughing my ass off over how I cheesed his slaking by using protect on the turns it wasn't loafing around lol
The DK music :) relaxing
You could also be cheap and constantly use dig when he hasn't put you to sleep

LOL at "YOU ASS!"🤣
I guess you could say, he was lacking in the anti-Slaking department.
funny, while watching this I saw a Spinda with the exact same pattern as the Spinda in this video
I had toxic stalled Slaking since Skarmory can tank his hits. God speed that metal chicken
I really thought it was over once Slaking went down. Talk about a fake-out!
Well, what do you know? Slavinator has been taking pokèballs out of your backpack while your not looking!
Wow. Never thought I'd ever associate Forest Interlude with Norman's Gym. Very random but a nice touch.
Did anyone realize that he left two recordings of him setting up his team before the gym leader battle?
+Web Compendium Yep. Editing oversight, maybe?
bruinsgirl33 Yeah
Ad at beginning of video: Five seconds is not enough time to decide on auto insurance. Me: ITS ENOUGH TIME TO SKIP THIS F***ING AD! *clicks button*
Chugga's face when he saw that Linoone was probably priceless.
slaking strategy: use protect on its attacking turn and attack on its truant turns, because it doesnt have brick break
Brick Break only breaks through Reflect and Light Screen. Also the Protect TM is available way after this fight so you'll have a hard time finding something with that move.
dig works too
When I was young when I was battling a trainer and my pokemon was one level under theirs and after beating them and I leveled up in thought I took their level!😂

Oh yes the painful memories I had with that gym. I used to have such a hard time with that gym and even now it is still pretty hard.

He sent out Slaking first instead of Spinda for me.
+AUSTIN UNDZIS No, He starts off with Slaking in Ruby and Sapphire

God damn that Linoone is terrifying after it Belly Drums.
God damn that Slaking is terrifying.
God damn this gym leader is terrifying.
Slavinator is the Steve of Hoenn. HE'S A TROOPER!!
Love the DKC 2 music here!
I was looking for a trapinch to add to my team and the first one I found was shiny
I named my character my son so it was "I lost to my son"
+Frank Jake I always name my character Master because it's hilarious when anyone addresses you. In the Gen 1 games and their remakes, I named my rival Slave.
Wow.... I got a paper cut.
Just you dig on slacking man
Emile: Moegami will be our star player here.

Seems legit
To me, it always seemed like the designers ended up moving Norman's gym late in development without compensating the story properly. I had to watch this since I had no idea where to go after flannery
THIS WAS SO EASY WITH BRELOOM + SETTING UP IN THE SPINDA OMFG (thank you brawly for that tm)
Ramon Ortega I mach punched his ass
Moat comments in the comments section: Well I had a really easy time on the gym because i used my Blaziken. I used no heal items at all. Like, we get it. Blaziken is good in this gym
I like how you mention Bramble Blast's theme a few episodes back then use Forest Interlude / Web Woods's theme as the background music here, XD!
I don’t get why people think the strategy of cannon fodding is cheap, people like Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Imagawa Yoshimoto thought cannon fodding was effective
worst name huh? ROXanne,BRAWLy,WATTSon?
Flannery- Flame
Norman- Normal
Winona- Wind
Liza and Tate- Levitate
Wallace- Water
STEven - Steel
you should have done fake out.you hardley use it
What is Slavinator beats the Elite 4 on Steven's last pokemon
Joe Thomas keep dreaming, he uses 6 pokemon, slavinator isn't an actual part of his team
Nameer Qadir did nameer read Joe's comment?
Nameer Qadir then nameer shouldn't have bothered
Norman's Slaking is to Gen III players what Whitney's Miltank was to Gen II players
the maker of nightmares, the breaker of gameboys, the causer of rage
"YOU ASS!" I laughhed SO hard, Jesus christ.
Im kinda bummed now I thought that was definitely going to be hard I only used one pokemon
0:19 DARUDE ALERT!!!
Mr.Crainer alert
read muk backwards
Lol, I love how if Altair died against Slaking, slaking would have been loafing the next turn, and slavinator could have killed it xD
you know cradily could be used as a great pokemon to start any battle with by setting things like leech seed, toxic then switch it out for an attacker then you wash rinse and repeat the cycle thats sort of how i used my dusclops
Facade and Guts... murderous combo
I completely agree on the Lileep comment @ 3:40. It seems to have a huge impact whenever it evolves.
Everything died to the zangoose
this is funny: i was playing my ruby version like 7 years ago and i was down to his slaking. all of my other pokemon were down and i only had my level 24 trapinch. i just kept using bite attack and it kept flinching his slaking. i won by PURE LUCK! thank you, trapinch! :)
Loved the music for the gym trainer battles montage.
That music from DKC2 sounds kinda like a theme you'd hear in a cave in Pikmin 2.
I have the feeling he really doesn't like to level up Slavinator :))) I mean it's the perfect opportunity in the Slaking
i love the music during the gym trainer battles :D
I guess having headphones on and not paying attention before Chuggaa yells is a curse through all his LPs.
"YOU ASS!!" scared the crap outta me!
>o
Ha, very un good. Victory soda pop?
Forest interlude.. That track is just so relaxing.
If you used a Swellow on your team, I'd give it Façade because it would be immensely powerful with Guts + Façade + Poison or something.
The music was so soothing and relaxing.
Funny thing, Slaking was a joke vs my Torkoal. All it tried to do was Counter when it could attack, which i would do Curse. a Torkoal with fully buffed stats just MURDERS everything.
ie rekt it with aron in this m xD
+Humberto Hernandez *gym
I'm surprised that chugga completely forgets about vigoroth's slack off for healing.
Awesome choice for the speed up interlude song!
easy slaking plan:
Step 1: Torkoal
Step 2: Moves: Protect, toxic, body slam (or any damaging move).
Step 3: Protect on any attacking turns, toxic turn two and damage all other times. Goes down no porblem.
Or get a fighting type. teach it a STAB and bulk up. Then bulk up so you can take a hit. and hit hard.
Thank You so much :)
magnus20011 your welcome : )
Here’s a tip: When facing Norman’s Slaking, use a one turn move on the first turn, but then continue to use two-turn moves that have a turn of warmup before use and have the warmup be during the Slaking’s Truant turn so it loafs around while you wait for your attack. Useful moves for this include Dig, Bounce, Dive or Fly as well as Skull Bash. I know Skull Bash is a normal type move being used on a normal type but that defence buff you get on the first turn of Skull Bash should help reduce the damage done by Slaking’s next attack on a non-Truant turn
Chugga I love that you put the forest interlude song from donkey kong country 2 I love that song
That music that he used during the speed up was amazing, seriously.
