How to Help An Egg Bound Hen

  • RSM has a hen who appears egg bound. How do you know what to look for? And how do you help an egg bound hen? RSM shows you some things about this condition which can be helped. (Note that there are other methods to help an egg bound hen which she doesn't demonstrate, so please do your own research and consult a vet if you're not sure what to do!)
    Also please understand that this hen Calypso was not in fact egg bound, but had an incurable condition called water belly or Ascites. You can learn about that in another video, BUT the treatment that RSM does here for an egg bound does work.

    My hen was egg bound once this summer and her butt was low, which is how I could tell. I held her like a baby on her back and lightly messaged and actually rocked her.....when I sat her back down the egg dropped out. I probably got really lucky this worked. I love your videos, helps me a lot being a first time chicken mama...lol.

      Wow thats lucky! And yes to gently rubbing front to back. I’m just terrified of the egg breaking inside her 😬 also be careful of holding them on their back as they start to get “sleepy” but really they’re being asphyxiated 😳 I’ve done it before because I didn’t know and I’m glad my chicken didn’t die so I wanted to warn you ❤️ if they start to close their eyes you gotta turn them back over!

    Hey girl! Get an eye dropper & fill it full of mineral oil & squeeze all of the oil into her vent, it will lubricate everything inside & will not hurt her. I have done that & it worked

      I’m so sorry I know it’s scary and stressful. I’d continue to isolate her, try to feed her something softer like scrambled eggs, and look into massaging her. I know there is a risk of breaking an egg inside her but my concern at this point would be that she’s not pooping at all. When you soak her, make sure the vent gets under the water too and that she’s clean back there. ✌🏻❤️🐓 I’ll help as much as I can. theMama@realsimplemama.com

    I hope she can get that egg out. She’s so cute. I definitely see a big difference between her and my chicken that has water belly/ascites. My chicken couldn’t comfortably lay down like yours is in your videos. The huge abdominal fluid sac was too much on her lungs and she couldn’t breathe well. She would lay up against the panels of the dog pen I was keeping her in to prop herself up or if she laid down she would crane her neck way up above her body (like a giraffes neck) to be able to breathe. It was hard to watch, but she’s doing much better.
    I suspect you are right about yours being egg-bound. I hope she can pull through. Definitely a good idea to give her own food and water that she won’t have to walk over to so she can stay nourished. If her poop starts coming out green (like a grassy green or bile color) that’s a sign that she’s getting significantly malnourished and muscle wasting. Also, it’s ok for the bath water to be a little warmer, not hot, but warmer water will help relax her muscles and vent more which is the purpose. It’s also ok to do the bath more than once. I’d give her another if she didn’t pass that egg yet.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  3 года назад +1

      Thank you so much for your help. It’s been almost two weeks, the fluid has gone down but she’s not walking. Eating and drinking and poop is fine but no eggs. I think she’s older and heart is failing. She has all her own stuff and lots of baths, and lots of goodies like Greek yogurt.

      If your chicken is egg bound start feeding vegetable oils to lubricate in the exit route too and Vaseline in the vent. Soak every hour until she lays the egg. Give her electrolytes and calcium ( Tums)

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  Год назад

      I personally don’t lubricate the vent because I know people who tried to insert fingers and they ended up breaking the egg inside the hen which is fatal. The other suggestions sound promising! ✌🏻❤️🐓

    @FVWhimsy2010 Год назад

    I had a severely egg bound hen...and finally had to break the egg to get it out. It's a long story, but after removing that egg...she passed another egg and was then fine. I flushed her well with warm saline solution daily for several days, while keeping her in the hospital cage. Isolate these hens from the other hens, because they are inquisitive and will pick and peck on the hen's vent. Having feces built up and dried over her vent can block everything...urine, feces, and eggs. It's important to look at your hens daily and not allow feces to build up, for whatever reason.

      Yes! Get a plastic bin with a locking lid. Cut a hole for her neck and head to come through. Put the warm water and epsom salt in, put her in and out her head through the lid. Lock it. That way she can safely be in the water and you don’t have to hold her.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  2 года назад

      Yes! She ended up passing weeks later but it was related to a predator attack. 😖 the only thing to be aware of is that an egg bound chicken will often pass that egg, and be ok for a while, but technically it’s a reproductive issue so she will probably end up egg bound again. ✌🏼❤️🐓

    Would my hen be egg bound if it feels like the egg is in the front about half way down her chest. Did the soaking,think I was in the right area. • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  3 года назад +1

      Nope, that’s actually her crop. It also shouldn’t be hard but if she’s been out eating all day as normal, it would feel full. Be careful squeezing that though as you can make her aspirate (food comes back up like vomit but then goes back into lungs) as this can be fatal. But do a quick Google search for the chicken anatomy and you’ll see what I mean.
      An egg issue would be down between her legs, or towards her vent.
