  • The Norfolk & Western Class A 1218 steam locomotive arrives in Lynchburg, Virginia, then departs for Roanoke in spectacular fashion. This video includes a runby on the Lynchburg approach, a scene of the train entering the Montview yard, then additional runbys departing Lynchburg, en route to and approaching Roanoke.

Ahhh the good ole days, the 1218 was sure a sight to see. It's hard to believe she has been back at the VMT for so long now.

NS is starting out small, with very limited trips (some public, some employee, and some display only) and at least this year, only #630 will be used until #610 and #4501 are overhauled. That means there won't be mainline steam excursions on NS almost every weekend like in the past. For now, it might be only about 1-3 public excursions this year, and perhaps next, then if it is successful they might consider expanding the schedule to include more trips since they will have 3 locomotives available

This is an excellent quality video. Hopefully she'll be running again someday along with 611, 4501 and a class Y.

@dcoursey82 Pardon my ignorance, but why would using a steam locomotive be a liability? Have lawsuits been filed? and on what grounds?

@dcoursey82 Guess what, THEY DID. NS and TVRM will be joining up for mainline excursions starting sometime next year.

It's always beautiful , nostalgic ...to see steam trains running. But people always forget simple thinks like:
    1. - Or the machine is updated to make steam using another fuel , or she lies dead. Coal is a shit , pollution anyone knows what green house effect is? Maybe ...EUA are one of worlds top consumers. Great country but can't get out of political personal interests and help this world to breed.
2- They're slow to nowadays needs. To a vacation route maybe and just for that.

Also people might consider that or they just use the machines and update it ( safety things , etc, ) or recycle it. Leaving it at a scrap yard it's just another way of pollution nothing else.

@etucker5007 people ignore safey when they see steam trains. we call those folks foamers. Also steam cost a lot of money to maintain. For each day of operation it takes 30 plus days of prep on the engine. It also takes a large crew to keep them running. You need hostlers for overnight rests, engineers, firemen, brakemen, pilot engineers, and conductors. plus you need extra crew to handle servicing on the road.

OK all of you mega million lottery winners out there. Sounds like a good bit of philanthropy as far as donating the funds to get this steam program going again. Who knows, maybe you could get a tax break for it. OK, I know but it doesnt hurt a thing to dream. I buy at least one ticket a draw. Wouldn't that be great!!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that is absolutely FALSE. There is NO WAY that NS will EVER start a steam program again, not in this economic climate. I love steam engines just as much as everyone else, but in our litigious society, they're WAY too much of a liability. Don't blame NS, blame lawsuit-happy lefties and sympathetic juries.
